According to Wikipedia, tetanus (the cause of lockjaw), can be treated with proper medical care and nutrition. It isn't fun, but survivable with modern care, sort of like whopping cough and the flu.

This thread is now about sharing disgusting sickness anecdotes.

Can anyone top nearly dying of dysentery that lasted a span of 3 weeks?
I had an open wound for two years. Weekly doctor visits, yay!

Ok, CamStudio looks easy enough to understand (though it's recording the whole screen rather than just one window or section), but ImageMagick...yikes. I'm not sure if I screwed up the install or what, but it looks like all I can do is open an image viewer. The website is like a full-sized textbook and talks a great deal about command prompts, half of which don't seem to work on my system. Is there a more newbie-friendly option out there?

The cost of the game is still undecided, but it's likely there will be a monthly fee for joining the Multiverse as we are going to emulate all computers and physics even when players aren't logged in. Single player won't have any recurring fees.

It's under A New Game.
Well, that's a facepalm on my part. I was looking at the bulleted lists.
In that case, I really hope they drop that. I can't really do subscription-based gaming.

Watching this. If Notch can pull it off, this sounds like a simulationist's dream. I'm also vaguely amused by the date of the setting: 281,474,976,712,644 AD. Holy shit.

But I have to wonder, where did the "pay monthly fees" come from? I'm not finding it on the linked website.

I have to admit, I am very impressed with this LP. Although I know this style is rare for a reason; I hope you don't burn yourself out on it like so many others.

I don't suppose I could get a tiny mention in one of the next updates?

I'm sure I can work the creator of one of the grandest plant mods in somehow.  ;P

Yeah, the aim is to be a bit like Dresden Codak; infrequent but high quality.  The K-selection strategist of LPs, as it were.  It's getting more common updates right now because I'm on holiday, but in a couple of weeks it'll slow down to weekly or fortnightly so I don't burn out.  =B  This LP is very strongly inspired by one that did burn out but was nevertheless fantastic; look up Zoolooman's Civ 4 LP on the LPArchive.  An excellent read and sort of what I'm aiming for here.
I've read that one! The Russians, right? Shame it never finished :(

Good choice on the battleship. I speak from experience when I say that a properly upgraded Borodino will last us quite a long time :D

@ Sheb: I realize that you're joking, but an all-battleship fleet isn't as good as it sounds. The fleet would be the epitome of a glacier; very tough, but slower than frozen honey.

@ Frumple: It certainly is possible to buy a ship and keep it in storage. It very rarely is a good idea however, as the money would be better used to upgrade the ships we're actually using. On the other hand, I'm not sure how long it will be until we get a proper carrier (please note, the Gnevny is actually a sub-par destroyer rather than a full-fledged carrier), so perhaps your idea is a good one.

@ Bluerobin: Three of the Borodino's four guns can be switched for missiles or whatever. The last one is probably a built-in large laser, which cannot be switched out.

To put it simply, I'm looking for a program that will record a window or desktop, similar to streaming software, that I can then convert into an animated GIF. I tried one such program, and it seemed to work at first, but the final product only had maybe 3 frames out of 20 saved, and was a blank white rectangle.

Free or shareware is preferable, but I might be willing to cough up money if the price isn't ludicrous.

Also as a side-note, I'm working on something kinda awesome. I remember there were some complaints about how blocky and ugly the ships looked in the screenshots, and while I've been trying to get good angles on things it doesn't always properly convey shapes and sizes. If this project works, that shouldn't be as much of a problem  ;D

Part 12: Finally made it!

Welcome back! Last time, Yuri had his first Melee battle, got stabbed in the face, and lost his Epitaph. Pretty crappy time. However, now they've entered the home sector of the local bigwigs, so let's explore and have fun!

Did y'all miss the part where his management skill is abysmal? Even Torlo would do a better job :P

Putting Tats into a supply posting would be a good choice, but Kira will be leaving her posting as Head Chef the update after next. If Tats also transfers, we'll have no one cooking food for the crew and combat readiness will plummet.

If so, you'll probably need to delete the system.

Annoying thing is, how am I supposed to find a single moon or planet amongst 30 systems?

It actually shouldn't be too difficult; just go through the systems in alphabetical order in the system view tab, scrolling from top to bottom in each with your eye on the "Orbital Distance" column. As soon as you see '0', bam, there's your problem. It'll be a bit of a pain for high-body count systems, but it is still much better than abandoning the save. And you can always be glad that it didn't happen when you were at 100 or 120 systems or so.  :P
Shouldn't you start with the most recent system discovered? Surely an orbit wouldn't spontaneously change to 0 distance, it would have to be created that way.

That doesn't help at all! Just about every slot makes your ship more combat-capable! :P

Yes, even the waitress and nurse!
