Forum Games and Roleplaying / Re: Corrupt a wish!

Granted! You're in jail instead.

I wish for antacid tablets.

Science Fantasy is a good term. :D

Science as a vehicle for a story, instead of the story itself, like in Star Trek.

That's not a judgement call on either of em, I like them both. But comparing them is like comparing apples and oranges.
Oh, for sure. There's no reason you can't like both, as they're actually pretty different.

Na, it was because they wanted to look like it was science, by replacing magic with magic microbes.
There's still some magic.

Ok, midiclorians are the host body's conduit into the Force. We still have the mystical energy field known as the Force. It can affect totally non-organic stuff, as we've seen any number of times. And in the EU, we've got creatures that block the Force, basically creating a no-magic zone.
The EU also has an entire dozen+ book series focused on a species specifically exempt from having anything to do with the Force (which extends to all the organic tech they have), the new things brought up to fight them, and why they got tossed out of the magic universal thing in the first place.
I was referring to ysalamiri, but I guess you're talking about the Yuuzhan-Vong. I admit I haven't read those books, but isn't it a common magic trope to have enemies that are immune to the universe's energy?

But yeah; super-soft sci-fi. Magic swordfighters and space friction abound.

Why does he (or any rich person) need so many tax breaks? The dude paid the same percentage as someone who made $80,000; that's less than .5% of what Romney made.

I think it's the perceived racism of Jar Jar that people get all bent-out-of-shape over.
I actually haven't heard that one before, elaborate please?
That he's a racist caricature of black people.

Though I haven't heard the Italian one.
I never heard of the black one :P

The version I hear most frequently is that Jar-Jar (or his voice, at least) is stereotypically Italian.

And I agree with kaijyuu. Some of the books are really quite amazing.

34478
Well they guilt tripped him instead of shooting him. That is diplomat respect, isn't it?
I guess so. Keep in mind though that Palpatine was racist/speciesist (or at least the Empire had those kinds of policies), so it's possible he saw Jar-Jar as a dumb alien ripe for manipulation.

34479
Well, maybe. I know he paid less percent-wise, but I don't have the hard numbers on hand. I guess I should look them up, but I wanted to ask the question before we left the discussion behind.

(every time I tell myself, "no more posting in this thread!" and I keep getting pulled back in)

ETA: I was wrong! My bad!
According to whitehouse.gov, the Obamas earned $1,728,096 and paid $453,770 in taxes. Tax rate: 26.25%

I was right about the percentage thing though. According to the NY Times, Romney and his wife made $27 million while paying around $3 million; a lot more money on paper, but that's only an 11.11% tax rate.

Jar Jar? Yea, he was pretty good. I especially liked how in the background he went from being a foolish exile to a respected diplomat without anybody even noticing. Also loved how he got on with droids.
He wasn't respected. He was guilt-tripped into proposing the Grand Army by Palpatine, and everyone else agreed because they wanted it as well. Still better than being the scrappy comic relief, of course.

The rich are still getting taxed more than everybody else, and the more money you make, the more you get taxed.
So how come Mitt Romney paid less in taxes (percentage-wise and actual amount) than Obama, despite Romney making much more money?

It seems there are only two things you can admit to liking about Episode I and not get attacked: Qui-Gon Jinn (because he's the Cool Old Guy and the aforementioned cheating) and double-bladed lightsabers (though Maul himself is not safe).

*braces for flames*
I don't see why everyone hates on the prequel series so much. Sure, they weren't as good as the original trilogy, but they were hardly hand-delivered by Satan after being pulled from the bowels of Uwe Boll's darkest fantasies.
*duck and cover!*

General Discussion / Re: if self.isCoder(): post() #Programming Thread
« on: February 27, 2012, 09:43:50 pm »
Alright, I managed to get the program to read a name and return it properly, which is better than earlier. I still think it's bs that there isn't an actual String function, but whatcha gonna do?
Code: [Select]
int newChar()
{
//Local Declarations
char name[9];

printf("\n First, what is thy name?");
printf("\n Your name is...");
scanf("%8s", &name);

printf("\n Welcome, %s. I have been expecting you.", &name);

return;

}
Part of the function for creating a new character. I'm thinking this will be a semi-roguelike; permanent death ftw.

General Discussion / Re: American Election Megathread

Sup dudes.  OP updated slightly, just in time before I have to do it again for Michigan, which I guess will actually matter for something.

My cleaned up OP is also thirty thousand characters, 3/4 of the limit for one post.  I might need to stick stuff somewhere for storage.
*spittake*
There's a limit?!  :o
