General Discussion / Re: The Dream Thread
« on: July 28, 2017, 03:28:58 pm »
Had this dream a few nights ago. It was pretty great, in a weird way.

Like most of my dreams these days, it involves work. This dream begins as I arrive at work to start my day, but with a pretty major difference: it's mid-morning instead of early-morning which is when I usually start. I dunno if it was April Fool's Day or Halloween or what, but there were signs of severe pranking everywhere I could see. There was even a car buried up to its roof. It wasn't simply covered in a dirt pile, though; someone had dug a car-sized hole into the dirt, placed the car inside, and then proceeded to bury it until the top of the roof was flush with the ground. The ground was hard-packed as well, as though it had been done days ago.

Anyway. I look for my assigned truck and realize that it's nowhere to be found. In real life, this is when I'd call the office and try to get a new assignment over the phone. In this dream, for some reason, I decided to pay the office a visit in-person. The office is a pretty standard affair, normally; ground-floor lounging and computer area, all the managers and dispatchers up the stairs. In this case, the building was much larger and more open, like a multi-leveled mall. Instead of taking the stairs to speak to my manager, I climbed on people's desks and cubicle walls and any other handy object. No one seemed to mind.

My manager informed me that I was going to be assigned to a new truck, but it was at an off-site storage area instead of our yard. I was given a ride to my city's downtown district and was dropped off in front of a small Chinese restaurant. I spoke to the staff inside, and after a while I managed to convince them that I was there for my truck, not any food. When they demanded payment, I gave them a sack of jewels. Some of the jewels looked fake, but the staff didn't care.

The staff said that they weren't exactly sure where my truck was located, but they would help me search. A door at the back of the building took us from the small restaurant to what was either a hotel or an apartment tower; several floors with numbered doors, some of which had people on the other side. There were secret passageways that I dared not explore, and the stairs leading from one floor to the next were never the same design twice.

Eventually one of the restaurant workers shouted that they had found my truck! I came running and I saw...a closet. Just some shelves inside a door. The person insisted that my truck was there so I took a closer look and found that the shelves were just camouflage. Beyond those shelves were more shelves. And then more. And more. Until I entered this bright, modern parking garage. It was huge! Dozens of cars of every make, model, and color. Sitting in the back? Several trucks, all with my company's logo on them! I found the one assigned to me, hopped in, and started it up. The last thing I noticed before I woke up was that the odometer was set to 0. It had never been driven before.

Hmm. Shall I perform Martyn so he can open the door this turn, or wait and perform Bert so he can do some extra healing?

Decided to mow the yard for my dad.

Now the wasps are out in force and we're out of spray.

If the barricades fall and I never post again, tell Toady "hello".

And now a mud dauber is building a nest right next to the front door.

They are coming.

It's worth pointing out we don't only have Gelt. Our cargo bay is likely to be filled with unspecified goods that are almost universally accepted for trading purposes, such as promethium, victuals, replacement parts and the like.

Fuel, food, and parts are generally less useful when dealing with those outside of the Imperium (especially Xenos). Their starships are obviously alien enough that using any of them in an opening offer would be kinda silly.
That's true, but phosphorus isn't exactly archeotech or some rare xenos material. Would it be likely for the ship's hold to contain some (as well as other common minerals)?

Other than that unpleasantness, I guess the only feedback I really have is that I wish the languages are explained a bit better. I thought Algedun would be the language of the land (which is why I took it in the first place) but apparently it isn't? So what do these monks speak?

And why the hell does it seem like everyone can speak Norwegian or Swedish or whatever our characters' language is based on except for me?

3471
I have feedback:

Roll my stuff better :P

3472
((Great gods above and below, the hell is wrong with my rolls so far?))

Gunnvor switches back to her native language, seeing that the monks apparently do not speak the trade tongue.

"I know a bit of first aid we can use to stabilize the wounded one, but if someone is knowledgeable in such matters I would rather they take over."

3473
Dunno what you're talking about, I clearly said Monk 3.

Anyway, sorry for taking a while. I meant to look up what Persuasive Goad did, but work kept me distracted from pfsrd.

3474
Gunnvor gives up on her useless crossbow and advances towards the monk, eyes flashing with unnatural light.

Spoiler: Algedun (click to show/hide)

E-12, Persuasive Goad on Monk 3! Get him to quit fighting!

Not talking about temp services, but (un)employment agencies. There's an office in my hometown, where they put out the daily paper's classifieds section, hold resume and interviewing workshops, and provide computer use free of charge (as long as you're looking for work on said computers). Also fax services and telephones. Great place.

I can't say I've ever had luck with job-search sites, so I hope you do better :(

Maybe try something else? I remember that monster.com used to be...decent.

Also, try checking with any unemployment services your area offers. They may have their own website with postings.

Pakistani police arrested 25 members of a village council for sentencing the young teenage sister of a rapist  to be raped by the brother of the rape victim, as retributional punishment.

Sad. Back in 2002, a similar case came before the court in Pakistan, and 6 village council members (from the same region) were even sentenced to death for it. You'd have hoped that would put an end to the village council speed justice mispractices, but nope.
As Pakistani women's rights activist Mukthiar Mai writes on her blogpost 'we are still in 2002'.
At least those council members were arrested...right? It's something?

Probably cold comfort to the other victims involved.

I've read stories about members of similar councils get away with blatant murder and other horrific abuses of power, not even getting a slap on the wrist.

Wait for Kyle to move up first?

: "Yes, agreed. I would recommend haste however, as there could be more of these...whoever they are on the way."

I assume you mean "are they going to pay it or are they going to reimburse you and you have to pay it first?" because he already said that the company is going to cover it.
I'm "pretty sure" they're going to cover it. The ticket got sent to corporate HQ and none of the people I've spoken to (my direct manager on up) has mentioned anything about me having to pay for it, so add in the bad situation and I doubt much will happen to me other than some mandatory training. But I could be wrong.
