Have you been following this thing, at all?

You have four soldiers to start. You upgrade somehow (might be as simple as building more barracks) to hire more.

You have one main base, but can build additional hangers and stuff to spread your forces.

Unlimited ammunition is admittedly a little weird, but I never seem to run out anyway. Every dead alien is more plasma ammo, bullets are dirt cheap, and lasers have always had unlimited ammo.

Dwarfs: (n, pl) The whole of Dwarfkind "Look at what the Dwarfs built"
Dwarves: (n, pl) A reference to a group of specific Dwarfs "The crazy Dwarves who built Boatmurdered"
Where'd you get those definitions? Oxford English?

When you look at it from a gamers perspective they seemed stupid looking but if you imagine fighting something that is bright coloured and entirely capable of killing you without breaking a sweat it would be mindnumbingly terrifying.  So I say the stupid bright coloured superhero outfit was to intimidate their enemy...
The same argument applies to the new Muton designs. Longtime fans of X-COM classic may scoff at the power armor, but if those things were real...I wouldn't think badly of anyone pissing their pants when about to fight those.

Bay12 having conspiracy theories about Bay12 is a bit much for me. So, my WTF for the day, there were no females at all in my programming class, save the teacher. There's usually at least a couple of ladies that outshine the neckbeards. *sigh*
I know, right? I have two programming classes, with maybe 3 ladies between them. Coincidentally, they're also both taught by teachers with fairly poor spoken English skills. Makes it a bit tricky to understand all those concepts.

Sounds good to me. I need to start playing CC again, I had all sorts of fun blowing clones and dropships to pieces.

Firefox continues to insist that the proper word is dwarfs, not dwarves. Clearly Firefox is mistaken :P
Firefox doesn't agree with elfs, though. elves and dwarfs.
Oh English, why art thou so self-contradicting?

Ah yes. Truly the Judas of vermin-kind :P

Yeah, I was surprised too. Apparently it's called Mun (insert two dots above the u), and you can fly to it, orbit it, land on it, and take off again with proper ship design. Since I can't even successfully orbit yet, I clearly have a long way to go :P

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So many rats!
« on: January 19, 2012, 08:52:35 pm »
So I fired up DF for the first time in a year or so yesterday, determined to have some good old-fashioned !!fun!!

I choose a nifty-looking embark site: soil and clay on the surface, flux stone, and both deep and shallow metals. No surface magma, but I'd deal with that later. It's just a little cold.

So I dig out my initial home, get some beds made, start moving stuff inside, the usual, when the snow starts melting. And as it does, I see this near the wagon:

I may be slightly paraphrasing, but I believe the quote "Never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity" applies here. It is far more likely that Toady failed a posting check which happened to fall on the same day as a blackout (which was observed by maybe 10% of websites, total), than the scenario that Toady did protest, but did it in the most ineffectual way possible.

I see nothing more than people seeking to justify their own paranoia by seeing "signs".

Guys look Toady's protesting SOPA/PIPA too!

No but seriously I have no idea what is up with this.

That was posted yesterday, during the SOPA blackout. so yes
Because everything in the entire world revolves around SOPA, right?

Toady's super (and properly, especially at this point) paranoid about ANY legal business getting in the way of his development of DF. That's why the game is non-open-source freeware with only other redistributable freeware included in the package.
What does paranoia have to do with a blank box?

Nope. You'll notice that Bay 12 wasn't shut down. A single, text-less comment hardly qualifies as a "protest". I have no doubt that hundreds, if not thousands, of websites did jack squat.

Posting to watch.

Also: will this game have "artifacts"? Not necessarily strange moods or anything along those lines, but randomly getting a named item with interesting descriptions and powers would be pretty nifty.
