Civilian. Definitely civilian.

2 reasons why:

It allows you to put civilian engines on them without getting a TON of failure rate.
It allows civilian shipping companies to build them.

Both are VERY important.

You can boss around any ship you build.
Another reason is that cargo bays are frickin MASSIVE, and your commercial shipyards are the easiest to upgrade. You can tack on 10,000 tons of capacity to a commercial shipyard in the time it takes to add maybe 2,000 tons to a military shipyard.

Near the end of the game of course, your warships will probably be at least that big.

Terraforming installations (and possibly other things, not sure) take up more than that. My first freighters are always 25,000 kg 25000 ton capacity, and they require about 2 trips for a single terraformer.
Fixed, My first cargo ships are always tiny and require a bazillion loads per facility.
Right, thanks. Dunno why I said kg ^^;

Make sure that the ship's hold is empty. I made the same mistake, trying to load infrastructure into a freighter that was already packed full.

@ Flying Dice: Of course not. I have Nevada for that  :P

@ Tarran: That must be it. I fired up Aurora in response to Ruler's post, and Oxygen content is at 30.38%

Not unless safe greenhouse gas can suddenly become not-safe. Aside from Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide, and Oxygen, Mars has nothing else in the atmosphere.

I need help/advice D:

Standard Earth game, earlier today got Mars to 0.00 colony cost. I began removing the infrastructure to Venus while I left the terraforming installations to get Mars a bit more Earth-like by adding more oxygen. Well, I suddenly got the warning that unrest was rising on Mars due to overcrowding, and sure enough Mars had somehow shot back up to 1.8 cost.

I've checked oxygen and temperature levels, and they are both well within the required range. Unfortunately, at this point even if I brought back all of the infrastructure Mars had previously, it would still have about 5 million too many people. What's wrong with Mars?

I take practically the opposite approach, and plant at least a few mines on any high-quantity world I come across. Since the mines never need replacing and upgrade automatically, they're a very long-term source of minerals which pay for themselves hundreds of times over. Even better if geo teams can improve accessibility, but that's more of a bonus than anything else.

I've set mine at 3,000, 2,500, 900 (lost colony rebuilding scenario) and even 40,000  :P

Anyway SirAaron, I have two suggested starts: One if you want a standard game, and one if you want a slightly easier game.

For a default game, leave all of the options the way they were when the game started. Turn off Invaders if they aren't off already

For a slightly easier game, set all of the species tolerances higher than normal. For oxygen pressure and gravity, set them to 80%, the maximum. For temperature you should set it to at least 25, and atmospheric density to at least 4 or 5. Set NPR generation chance and starting NPRs to 0, to ensure safety while learning the ropes. Increase the starting number of labs and shipyards.

Optional for both:
  • Check the box for "No Overhauls Needed". This will allow you to concentrate on moving your ships without worrying about possible breakdowns.
  • Turn off any of the special enemies as you see fit.
  • Turn off Inexperienced Fleets.

Once you start, get SCIENCE going immediately. Look at what your scientists specialize in, and focus accordingly.
Begin construction on whatever you need more of. You typically have plenty of mines, so I usually start by building a few extra labs and maybe an additional shipyard or two.

Okay, I've given this another chance and am starting fresh. WITHOUT the tutorial because last time I tried it, it was not very helpful at all. So I'm asking you guys what to do, starting from the very beginning: worldgen settings.
Er, any chance you could be more specific? What exactly is confusing you?

Aside from the name, that sounds exactly like the Black Widow perk from Fallout 3. I don't remember any uproar over that.

Hmm, possibly. It'd depend on what rules this universe's civilizations run on.

GalCiv Rules: One building and one ship per world at a time, fast expansion
Aurora rules: split production, very slow expansion
Starcraft rules: everything runs on crystals and gas

Just a few examples  :P

Don't worry about bumping.

Yes, this has been rather update-less for week. No, I have not been abducted by aliens or whatever. Just mundane school stuff.
I should have time to crank out the  rest of the year tomorrow.
