You mean literally anything?

"A peculiar question for a priest to ask. But with a brief examination of your case...I can see why you would risk asking such thing. Unfortunately I created the Reaper for a reason; to make sure the dead would remain that way. To let the mortal be able to rest peacefully, so that goes against those principles. If this was a recent death, I would be willing to make an exception, but she has been in the afterlife for a long while, however I can arrange another option for you."
"I will grant you access to the afterlife. You will be allowed to traverse between these two worlds-But do NOT bring anyone with you. This access is specifically limited to you, if someone tries to cross this bridge alongside, they will face the Reaper's punishment. This way you will not have to forfeit your life to be able to see her."
Gordon took a deep breath.

: "In that case...aye, I accept. I will protect me companions in tha trials ta come, and accept this boon."

Finally...Finally, I will see ye again, Anna. I regret that I cannae join ye just yet, but there is still much work ta be done.

: "...Was that a sword that just bounced off your head, Vortai? It's a good thing you were wearing that helmet."

394
: "Goodness, is that a Light siege tome? Those are rare. May I see that, Marlow?"

L-13, trade Elixir for Purge (if Marlow is amenable), deliver a long-range ZAP to Warrior Monk G!

: "We'd be pretty lousy merchants if that were the case. We haven't got two coins to rub together."

: "We do way more important stuff, like saving people in danger and fighting villains. It's a lot more fun, too; I couldn't imagine sitting in some dusty room adding numbers together my entire life."

: "Anyway, we've been wandering the Empire for the past few years trying to make names for ourselves. It doesn't exactly fill the wallet, but it's satisfying work."

Funnily enough I just read the Lord of the Rings for the first time not too long ago, and I was in fact wondering why Tolkien spent so much time on ancestors and mythical figures and so on, particularly when they had no real relevance to whatever was going on in the story. Also wondering about other things, but that's outside the scope of this thread :P

Alright, fair enough. Xianxia/wuxia are basically Chinese Fantasy Novels, and in a lot of cases the stories will assume that the reader is familiar enough with the cultural background to understand why they're doing things the way they do. That makes sense.

As a side note: thanks to everyone leaving suggestions. I have been looking at them! There's just a lot to look at and never enough time in the day.

The twins jumped a little in their seats as the huge man with the eyepatch addressed them.

: "Who, us?"
: "We weren't staring--"
: "--not much anyway--"
: "--and we're not really looking for a fight--"
: "--not that I have anything to fight with--"
: "--but if you're offering something to eat--"
: "--we won't say no!" So decided, the two picked up their plates and maneuvered through the inn to sit closer to where the excitement was.

: "We're the Kanekos, from Izumo. She's Chidori and he's Chikara."

399
The man apparently called "Kara" looked up at the confrontation, one hand momentarily dropping to the tome strapped to his side. He hoped that his hotblooded sister would fail to notice the brewing fight...but no sooner did the thought cross his mind did the woman take her attention from her food and turn to watch with a shine in her eyes.

: "Dori. Don't."

: "Don't what?"

: "Don't do what we both know you're thinking of doing. We just got here, we have no money, and let's not forget that you don't have a blade. Don't go looking for fights right now." After a moment, Chidori returned her attention to the meal.

: "Oh, fine. That one with the hood looks like she'd be a fun opponent though." Even without looking at her brother's expression, she could tell that the one with the hood was the one Chikara was worried about.

Meanwhile at a side table of the inn, a pair of young adults said a quick prayer over their steaming plates and settled in to enjoy their meal. Their appearances were quite similar despite being somewhat unusual, which made it obvious that the two were close siblings if not twins.

: "I can't believe you broke your sword like that."

: "Aw c'mon, it's not like I let a wagon roll over it or anything."

: "You used it as a prybar."

: "Whiiich lifted that boulder just enough--"

: "--just enough to save that kid from drowning, I know. We could have found another way."

: "Not in time. Besides, it was just a sword. An object. I can get a new one."

: "With what money? Our last gold piece was spent on this meal."

The two sighed, then tucked into the food. Curiously, each ate from the other's plate as often as their own.

: "Tasty meal though. Cheer up, Kara. We'll find something suiting our talents." The boy grumbled in reply, but whether it was the food or his sister's positivity, his scowl did lessen somewhat.

Amberly was still breathing heavily from her brief but furious battle when a burst of healing magic closed her wounds.

: *pant* *pant* "T-thank you. I don't think I could have kept going much longer."

I'm sure the parodies are fun stories, it's just that parodies usually require that the audience be familiar with the source material that is being parodied. For someone like myself, unfamiliar with xianxia in general, most of it would likely go over my head.

Thanks for the recommendation though, I'll check it out.

That's um, not an especially auspicious take on the genre, if the two most tolerable recommendations are parodies :P

It's not a good situation. If we stay, things are going to continue on the way they have for the past twenty years. If we leave, other interests are going to take over where we left off and probably add their own brands of fuckery to the mix.

Whoever wins Afghanistan, the Afghans are going to lose.
