Edmund watched the bandaging of his hand carefully to make sure it was correctly done.

: Ahem. What about our insurance that you will keep your end of the deal?

: "That is simple. My fiancee will be accompanying you along with Captain Porkins. The item I'm sending you to retrieve is in her family's vault.

"If that isn't sufficient, you are welcome to return to your holding cell and await dawn."

: "Not much more to say on what lies between here and this bank?"

: "Nothing concrete. Reports of remnant warbands abound, sometimes with bodies. Just last week we got word of a horde of undead as well, but the scouts have not caught up with it yet, if it exists."

4277
: "Captain Porkins' name has nothing to do with your mission. Unless you have something relevant to ask, perhaps you should remain silent.

"In any case. You will be traveling east, towards dwarven lands. The dwarves operate a sort of bank on the outskirts of their territory, which my family has made use of for generations. I want you to go to the bank, retrieve a certain item for me, and return it here. The Captain knows more about it and will fill you in once you are on your way.

On paper it is an easy task, but you must be cautious. The Wastelanders were defeated less than a year ago and many dangers still prowl the land. Thus, I will be providing suitable weapons from the armory. Return the item to me despite the danger and you will each be rewarded."

4278
Alright folks, you're gonna get equipped and you're gonna get equipped pretty well.

Each of you may choose from one of the following packages:
  • Two weapons of your choice, 1 C-rank and 1 E-rank
  • Two weapons of your choice, 1 D-rank and 1 E-rank, as well as one vulnerary

The weapons must be things that you can currently wield, and you may not get unique or class-specific items. Post what you would like here.

One by one, Master Branwich branded the symbol of the skull into the back of each prisoner's hand. When that was done, he carefully bandaged each fresh wound to prevent infection while General Eastland spoke.

: "For the non-citizens who are unaware, the skull icon means that you have been sentenced to lifetime incarceration. The law states quite clearly that any such man found outside an Imperial prison, or without the escort of an Imperial officer, may be captured or killed on sight. This is my insurance. Any of you that manage to slip away without completing my assignment will be hounded for the rest of their life.

"Captain Porkins here will accompany you, to serve as both your cover and your guide. Once you return, my healers will remove the brand and you will be free to make new lives as you see fit. Any questions so far?"

They could do this! They were so close!

(4,12) and perform for Esther!

4281
Okay, so it turns out that BMM42 was using the wrong evade rate for the archers, which brings Esther's chance to hit them down from 80 to 66 or so. Knowing that, should we still have her target them or try to do something else?

4282
: "Don't you try to minimize your crimes, you swine. You participated in the rape and murder of your own countrymen! I oughta--"

: "Enough, Captain." The general looked far from happy, but he spoke mildly. "Now then. What is your assessment? Can we count on them?"

: "Frankly sir, I wouldn't pay half a day's wages for the lot of them."

: "I'm afraid they're all we have."

: "Then I suppose I will make do." The captain sighed, while the general stepped back so he could face all of the prisoners at once.

: "Men and women, I am General Eastland. You have all been sentenced to death for crimes both numerous and terrible. Your executions are scheduled for the morning. Nothing can save you from your fate, except for a pardon, and I am the only man in a hundred miles that can grant such a pardon. Fortunately for you, I have a...sensitive matter than I need done, for the security of the Empire rests upon it. If you return successful, you will not only receive a full and complete pardon for your crimes but also a chest full of gold each.

"If you volunteer, step forward and hold out your left hand. Master Branwich will mark you in order to seal the contract."
Master Branwich, it seemed, was the hooded man in the corner, by the lit brazier. He held one of the metal rods resting among the coals up. The glowing end of each rod was formed in the shape of a skull.

4283
The captain scowled before speaking again.

: "As you might've expected, I've saved the worst for last."

: "Edmund Brauner, from Heartland. Arrested for inquiring into the purchase of blood magic tomes. He's also under suspicion for a number of hex-related crimes, but so far the investigators haven't found anything solid."

: "William Warwick, from Sukiamer. The old man was arrested before he could get his hands on any forbidden tomes, but this one actually had at least one in his possession, and was attempting to learn how to use it. He was charged with malfeasance and conspiracy to commit treason." The captain's scowl became even deeper at the sight of the last prisoner. Fury flashed in his eyes.

: "Compared to this one however, the rest are practically nuns. Adrien of Rasparol. This man voluntarily joined Abih's forces, becoming a squad leader and joining in the Wastelander's rampage. He was captured just after the Battle of Grenoga, in which he had actively fought for the invading side." The captain spat on the floor in front of Adrien's feet. "These rest may be scum, sir, but this one...he's a traitor. He doesn't deserve anything but death."

4284
After a moment the red-haired man nodded, and the captain continued introducing his prisoners.

: "Yara of Palagonia. Part of a protection racket extorting goods and money from under-defended villages. When the Palagonian Guard finally caught up to them, she and her wyvern were captured."

: "So that's why a great lizard is currently tied up in my stables..."

: "Gawen Cawallader. She claims to be a 'Mountain Princess' of some sort, but no one has attempted to claim her so I think her story's bunk. She was arrested for trying to interfere with a lawful, unrelated arrest, using lethal force."

: "Next up calls himself Aaron Hawkright. Hails from Deros. Charged with setting a coal mine on fire - with fatal results - and unlicensed use of magic. That appears to be how he started the fire."

: "Hmph." The newcomer scowled at the prisoners in general and Aaron in particular.

4285
Well that's kinda garbage. Archers need some sort of weakness and an inability to fight adjacent enemies makes as much sense as anything.

4286
: "Line up, damn your worthless--" But whatever the soldier had been about to say was cut off as the door to the dungeon swung open.

: "ATTENNNNNN-SHUN!" he bellowed before following his own orders, standing ramrod straight and saluting in the direction of the dungeon door.

As the newcomer strode into view of the prisoners, it became clear to all that he wore the same colors as the soldier who had led him here...or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that the soldier wore the same colors as the newcomer. The new man, taller yet somewhat younger, gave each of the prisoners a piercing stare before speaking.

: "What have you got for me, Captain? You have read their files, correct?"

: "Of course, sir. What there was of them, anyway. If you'll allow me...?"

The redheaded man gave a single, sharp nod, and the Captain started with the first three in line...and the one that refused to actually get in line.

: "Ghamina al-Ghul, of the Khanate. Married Baron Gratis, then attempted to poison him in order to inherit his wealth. We have the confession of the man who sold her the poison." The general scowled at this story, but said nothing.

: "Alain Cromwell, originally from Blede. Brought in for unlicensed use of magic, as well as murder. Claims self-defense on the murder charge." The captain offered no commentary on how plausible the claim was, and the general didn't ask.

: "Miranda Solas of Heartland. Charged with theft and assassination. Pleads innocent but an eyewitness claims to have seen the killing itself." With a noncommittal shrug, the two men move on.

: "I'm afraid we don't have much on this one. Calls herself Stray Wolf, refuses to say where she's from. Apparently worked as a mercenary before snapping under pressure, attacking Imperial soldiers."

: "I'm sorry Captain, but did you say 'snapped'? Is she stable?"

: "Not really my area of expertise, sir."

The general stared hard at the first four, searching for something in their eyes.

4287
Sensing general agreement, the lead soldier finally nodded.

: "Smartest thing you ever did. Single file now, follow the path."

One by one, the prisoners (each with an escorting soldier who looked none too pleased about the duty) were marched towards the central keep, where they were directed through another stout door that led deeper into the earth. Eventually, they reached a room containing a number of nasty-looking "interrogation aids". In one corner, another hooded man tended a brazier full of red hot coals. Several lengths of iron had one end resting in the scorching heat.

: "Line up! Face forward! The General will be here any moment!"

4288
: "You may be female, but you are no lady. I read your file."

4289
Distantly at first, but slowly growing louder and nearer, the prisoners could hear the sound of marching, steel-clad feet. A lot of feet. The sound stopped just outside the door holding the prisoners in.

"Whut dis about? Ain't time to chop. Sun ain't up."
"New orders from the General. Open this door. We are to bring the prisoners to the dungeon. I have his orders written here..."
"Can't read."
"Just open the door, man. Men, weapons ready."

The sharpening sound ceased, and a short time later the door's lock emitted a heavy THUD followed by a complicated series of clicks. After another short pause, the door swung open and a soldier stepped through the door, followed by three more. They all had swords drawn. Past them, the prisoners could see what looked like a dozen more armed soldiers.

: "Alright you scum, pay attention. I've orders to bring you to the dungeon alive and intact. When it comes right down to it, however, I'd rather butcher you all myself and face the General's wrath later than lose a single one of my men in some half-assed escape attempt. If you cooperate, things will go much more smoothly for everyone. If you cause trouble, you die. What's it going to be?"
