Mordecai started a little at the pat, not used to such casual contact.

: "Well, uh, we did live near the Saari Badlands, and we almost never had any trade. That was just the way of life for my clan." Lacking much else to do, having no idea how cornbread was made or even if Rika was pulling his leg about it, Mordecai grabbed some dirty cookware and started scrubbing it in the sink. Running water was another thing he had had to get used to, but he wasn't about to say so and make himself seem like even more of a rube.

: "Still, I'm looking forward to both of your dishes! Almost feel like skipping the stew entirely, as unhealthy as that would be."

647
: "I confess, having so many sweet things readily available is still strange to me. I remember a Knight of the Order giving me a piece of 'chocolate' after she and her team saved my village, and thinking that it was must have been a gift from directly from the Sculptor. Then I came to York and it can be found all over the place."

Mordecai noticed that the bowl's contents had been whisked smooth, and so returned it do Rika.

648
Mordecai gets to whisking.

: "I'm honored, I guess. Food does seem to have a way of bringing people together; it's pretty universal across races and cultures from what Professor Ververs says."

649
: "Don't look at me; I couldn't grow a weed." It wasn't much of an exaggeration.

: "In any case, the stew just needs to simmer a while and it will be ready. Do either of you need a hand?"

650
: "Ah well...I don't really have any favorites. Potatoes I guess. Until I came here, most meals were whatever we could put on the table, and potatoes were hardy enough to grow even through a Calamity if it wasn't too strong." He hesitated a bit before plunging on. It wasn't exactly a secret what his people did, after all. "We did keep some livestock, goats and the like, but those were more for their blood than for meat."

: "What about you? You grew up on a farm, so I hear, you must have been surrounded by all sorts of interesting foods."

651
: "I've never gone fishing before, but that should be an interesting experience. Could be fun, too." Privately though, Mordecai decided then and there to skip the bathing suit part of the trip. His kind got sun burnt far too easily.

: "And...'corn bread'? What's that? Surely you can't make bread with that weird yellow vegetable."

652
Mordecai wasn't really sure what to make of Rika's extra-familiar way of speaking. It reminded him of the way some of the elders addressed their great-grandchildren.

: "Never met a stew I didn't like, though I've never had fish stew - you called it 'gumbo'? - before. It sounds strange to me...though of course I'm not one to judge." He added that last bit hastily, painfully afraid of insulting his classmate. Not only was she being perfectly polite, she was also rather taller than he was and much better muscled.

: "Ah, I wonder what else should be served. We could use an extra set of hands."

653
: "The school chefs had some beef stock stored, so I figured it and some vegetables would go well together. Sadly the chefs keep the actual meat locked away for special treats." Mordecai chopped some onions as he spoke and threw them into the cooking pot.

: "It isn't anything fancy, but it's what I know how to make. I ate food much like it when I was growing up, though I am looking forward to that pudding you're planning." He neglected to mention that the stock at home rarely consisted of beef, and indeed rarely the same animal from day to day.

654
Mordecai, who had been absorbed in his work, jumped slightly when Rika addressed him.

: "Oh, hello! I didn't know what you'd find in the greenhouse, so I thought I'd start with something simple. It's just some stew using school ingredients. I trust you found something a bit more deserving of a celebration?"

655
: "I'll start prepping in the kitchen."

Mordecai heads to the Dining Hall to help cook, with plans to visit the Library (to boost SKL) afterwards, but at the moment has no other plans.

That doesn't sound like Team Fortress at all.

: "Thank you, Professor Ramsay, sir." Mordecai gazed down at the whetstone in his hand, feeling vindicated. All of the hard work he had put in was finally starting to pay off! There was still a lot more to do, of course.

Ignoring Kruger, the vampire looked around at Reeve's statement.

: "I suppose we could go into town for a celebratory meal, but that might be a little expensive for all of us."

658
: "Whew. That's the last of this bunch."

Mordecai dusted off his hands and looked back at Delwyn.

: "Thanks for the support. I think...yes, it sounds like the battle is nearly wrapped up. Shall we head over, or do you want to take a break?"

659
: "I have never cleaned an airship before. Or cooked on one. Or traveled aboard one, for that matter. This will serve as useful experience in case my future master has an airship of their own."

: "As far as packing goes, Miss Marta, I suppose it depends on what you need. A weapon is useful, though Miss Serena does not carry one. Medicine for curing ailments and injuries, some food and changes of clothes, whatever tools you need to work on the airship...oh, and socks. I highly recommend bringing plenty of socks."

660
Even the oblivious homunculus managed to notice that Marta was looking and acting a bit strange, though he had only the vaguest notions of what the inventor might be thinking. Still, he took extra care to look Marta in the eye.

: "Miss Marta, I would be delighted if you chose to help us out. I am certain the others would agree as well."
