On the note of the tantrum spirals, Dwarves will only make friends if they have excess time to laze about socializing.

Ensure that they are NEVER EVER out of work, and they will never make any friends other than the ones they enter the map with. Thus, when Urist McCheesemaker dies during an ambush from having been trying to haul to storage that one lonely sock from last ambush, NOBODY CARES.

Great idea, but I run out of ideas to provide my dwarfes with work once they become more than 50 >.<"

Build/raise a bridge. Or just lock your doors. The first ambush isn't even a threat if you use/activate burrows to keep your dwarfs inside. When they bring trolls you need to start looking at other methods.

Already tried that. Once Migrants arrive and get killed I get a crazy tantrum spiral.

Aparently the lever dangerroom is perfect. 110 Dwarfes, 70 of them in military and all of them are Axe- / Hammerlords <3

Now I wait for my elves to send their first forces, after I killed 4 of their caravans ^^

I wantet to build an above ground fortress so I tried to smooth the world.

On one side of my map are some hills, I need to get rid of and to save some time I chaneled along the map edges and removed one complete z-layer one the layer I wantet to build the fortress. Usually you think the hill would collapse, crush my miners, and i get a smooth ground. But no, all that is left is some sort of flying hill.

I had to chanel 16 level to reach the baselevel of my fortress, so I suppose there is some sort of z-level count on wich the "Collapse Calculation" doesnt work.

Anyone of you had a similiar experience and know how much z-level you can collapse at maximum?

EDIT: To describe the problem further, this is the simplyfied side view of the flying hill:

Even if you build not even one bed they dont throw tantrums during the first year.

Remove the wagon and build one carpenter workshop, one bed and one table out of the three logs. dig a smal 2x4 hole and place bed and table  inside. Create a 2x2 dining room and 2x2 dotmitory, et violá enough dining rooms and dormitorys for your first year within less than 2 minutes.

I primarly wanted to use the school to keep my dwarfes busy and to enable some sort of message simmilar to "Urist got satisfied at work recently" like "Urist got satisfied at school recently" so my idle dwarfes dont get bad thougts.

They never should become legendary in something, I would suggest in the main labor (Farming etc.) 3 levels below the teacher and in the sub labor (Brewing etc) 2 levels below the teacher at best and only after one year teaching. Already legendary Students should remain legendary, here the school keeps them "fit" so they wont get "rusty".

I thougt this already happens O.o

I know...

But unless you know there is an ambush the allert is offline. Otherwise you have to change the burrows everytime you expand your fortress. And if there is an ambush the goblins usually appear next to a dwarf or an animal next to a dwarf.

I didnt find anything with the search option, so big sorry, if someone already got this idea.

Everyone knows the problem that occurs in later years. 90% of your dwarfes sit around have nothing to do and you only get farming related Jobs with your migrants. My idea to solve these three problems is some sort of school system:

Minimum requirements for a school:

7x10 room
11 thrones
11 tables
4 chests

Hot to create?
Select the red Chair, make a room and set it to school instead of study. This will indicate, where the teacher stays.

How does it work?
You asign the chair to one dwarf with a high level in something (for example an expert brewer). Now he walks into the schoolroom and dwarfes or children with no job may join him or you asign specific chairs to specific dwarfes. The main labor of the dwarf you choose as teacher (in this example farming related) becoms the topic of his lessons. He then teaches all the dwarfes the basics of farming related Jobs with some focus on his sub labor (brewing).

With this you will get:

1. No rusty dwarfes.
2. In long terms god dwarfes for your mega projects. For example, you wont have the jobs to get 10 or 15 legendary masons, with a school you get an infinite Ammount of god Masons (depending of the size of your school) on standby for your 100z-level Tower of Doom.
3. No dwarfes wich idle 24/7 (so no bad thought because of this)
4. Your dwarfes stay inside your fortress if they got no jobs

What do you think about this? Any ideas, suggestions?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma question
« on: April 11, 2011, 04:31:26 am »
Magma forges require magma to work. Normal forges require "non magma" fuel because magma will damage it.

thats why there are two types of forge.

If you choose seasonal save, consider the HDD Space DF will require if it saves every time in another folder. After 3 years the save files are about 1,5 GB.

Are Dragons, giant Crabs or Minotaurs forgotten Beasts?

If yes, then they are not trap immune, I captured at least 2 Dragons, a Hydra, one giant Crab and a Minotaur in normal Cagetraps, as well as my bronzegolem and otherwise use a trap with a cave spider web:

A webbed cage trap will capture absoloutely anything in the current version.

EDIT: To be honest, I have no Idea how to use a giant cave spider web with a cage trap ^^"

Yeah, I know.

But you cant embark with tallow either so you got some Problems if your Hunter dies in the first minutes... Of course you can butcher your Horse/Mule/whatever wich comes with your wagon to render his fat, but sometimes you get no fat so you need to hunt wich is a problem if there are stronger enemys than your untrained Hunter.

As i said, both my Miner and Hunter died to an infection during the first month, no caravan or Migrants arrived in this time and there would be barely enough time to produce even one bar of soap with only 4 remaining dwarfes. (The medical dwarf has to look over the injured)
