Jokes aside that is entirely up to you, you can channel a pit and start your fort underground or choose a new location.

Or make an above ground fort o.0

you could dig down one, then build underground on the extremities, THEN make a cavein where the entrance was, THEN dig till the end of the map, and wait hoping that caravans decide to spawn there underground and not above.
as will enemies.

I have this mood on a save and usually it doesn't bother me if I fail one (generally because of glass heh... I hate glass -.-)
Anyway, as far as i can tell I have all of these items, several of each I assumed from square blocks up twice they want rock and metal blocks so a made about 5 copper and iron blocks to attempt to not lose my dorf. Now I cannot figure out what possible item I am missing here any ideas?

Square Blocks                      -20 or so obsidian and slate blocks
Rough Gems                        -155 rough gems
Shining Bars of Metal            - 25 metal bars (various)
Forest                                -1000 ish wood logs
Square Blocks                      - 13 metal blocks
Stacked Cloth                      -164 cloth
Stacked Leather                  - 56 leather

go to Manager, look at the dorf, and look at what damned object he has in list.
make more of those objects.
he wants the same exact things probably.
(maybe he took 1 adamantium wafers and wants more

i learned it like a dwarf.
instead of climbing the curve of hell i dug right through it.
Instead of emerging to the top and look at the sky, i dug deep beneath it and reached Hell and beyond!
and when i reached the end of the tunnel i dug i looked back.
Yes, i had many caveins.
Yes i had to read a couple of things written on ancient scrolls, but hail god i managed through. And now i'm enjoying quality time.

To turn it back into modern language non metaphorical:
i tried this game thrice.
first times, ascii killed me. i was still a little young.
second time, difficulty killed me plus the ascii. i was still too young.
Third time, i read boatmurdered, i beat the shit out of my own head for being so stupid, and got back to it.
Though by then, i discovered "lazy newb pack". and...tilesets.
from then on, i know i may not be an hardcore who goes only ascii, but with tilesets, i'm as happy as hell when dwarfs break the candy bars.

And yes, the wiki helped. As the "complete guide for utter newbs on DF". i didn't even know you could smash people with a bridge by repeating the order!

one thing you can do is go through a military squad, select kill order, then select objective from list.
it should pop up names of things.
go look at the wiki what they are. if it's got anything near "fire"...keep your booze safe.

drown them all. breach the acquifer. then come back as an adventure. swim further down, and grab what you want.
or you could use dfhack to magma it to hell...the acquifer i mean. (using also dfreveal).
but, i repeat, a surface fort made of wood, with a breached acquifer to make it a tower which stands in the middle of an ocean, with wooden bridges...is priceless.
