DF Suggestions / Re: Altering desigantion
« on: December 20, 2012, 02:12:39 pm »
Actually .... yeah, that would be nice.

However, similar behavior could be achieved through assigning a dwarf to a temporary burrow where the relevant work needs to be done.
...
There are multiple ways to get rid of that sabotaging tree. Burrows, canceling earlier designation and so on.
...

@ King Mir and Bytytan
I guess having 2 tiers would be enough (low and high priority), more would only be icing on the cake.

Idea: Adding multiple priorities to the designation menu

Lets say you just designated half of the trees outside for cutting down. Everything seems fine, your woodcutters are up there, doing their thing. Suddenly! A tower cap just popped up in the middle of a hallway, blocking of a part of your fort!
The ability to make this specific tree more important than the rest outside would be very handy.

But wouldn't it make things a lot less of a hassle? What about that almost ready dining hall with those 2 god damn squares waiting to get mined out?

TL;DR
Adding multiple designation priorities would make the life of an overseer easier.

This sounds like a job for a Quartermaster (or as it used to be called "Arsenal dwarf"). A noble that would make sure everybody is properly armed and informs the overseer if items are lost / out of reach.

I believe the "Masterwork" mod has both spear throwers and bone weapons.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your first vampire?
« on: December 18, 2012, 07:27:30 am »
After getting the generic "Urist is missing" message I paused the game. Found the corpse on the bedroom level. 10 minutes of detective work later I found him.
" ... The High Council has found you guilty! Since no physical punishment could ever make up for the suffering you have brought upon the mountain homes, you will not be sentenced for hammering. And your death will not bring back the lives you have taken during your unnaturally long life. No! Death would only free you from the course that has fallen upon you!
Instead, we will give you an eternity to make up for all the wrong doings you brought upon your brothers and sisters!
For you will be locked in a 2 x 2 cell with only a chair and a table. No bed, no food, NO BOOZE!
And you will stay locked inside that cell until you have counted everything! Every block of rock, every bag of sand, every metal bar and every piece of thread in the fort!
Once everything is precisely written down, you will be set free."
The Vampire: HA! You worthless mortals! I will play your stupid GAME! For I accept your challenge! A couple of years from now I will walk out of this hole as a free dorf!
And so he walked in to his prison. There he stayed for years. He worked hard, updating the records, slowly getting better. But whenever he thought that the end is near, something happened.
Then he discovered, that for as long as the fort lives, the stockpiles need to be updated.
Like Sisyphus, the vampire was trapped in a never ending loop. For whenever he started the updated, it was already out of date, for all of eternity, till the FPS lag, slowly, freezes him in place...

How do we explain the “FPS death” phenomena then?
Could it be that any given Fortion resonates at a given frequency once it comes in to existence, but because it interacts with objects which posses different frequencies and energies slowly destabilizes?

EDIT: Found another crash. Crafting vellum sometimes crashes the game. Not entirely sure what the conditions are for it, since it doesn't always crash. However, my game autosaved at just the right moment that it crashes roughly an in-game day after the save all the time, as long as the currently queued vellum job finishes.
...
DEAR LORD THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I just got the exact same vellum bug. By coincidence, the crash happened the same time a werebear transformed back in to a dwarf. All evidence pointed to him. But it was the bloody vellum.
MAY ARMOK BLESS YOU WITH THE MOST AWESOMLY CHAOTIC EVENTS EVER GENEARTED.

There is a lot of "lets play"s on the internet if you want to get a closer look.
So far I only red a bit about Gnomoria. Last time I checked it was still work in progress with some potential.

Edit: yup, it's still in alpha "...The release date is TBD."

Great read. One the bright side, you got to fight a dragon and survived(sorta). Last time I had one it got trapped... in a wooden cage... o the disappointment...

I tried to amass my forces before charging but they decided to charge at first sight and get picked off one at a time. Why do they do this? Does anyone else have this problem?
Soldiers charge at first sight of enemy troops, and don't give up until they run out of enemies to kill or limbs to kill with.
Since it's a siege, you should be prepared to welcome the enemy with traps, bolts and blades.
Don't charge out, trap them inside.

I have two dwarves out hunting, but im not sure if they willl find anything in the wastes. I need them to find animals for bones.
...

Bones? Why would you need those? What you need are maces for your soldiers.

Got too many dwarfs? You need more wood? I have a perfect solution for you!
1. Get some copper or silver weapons (preferably blunt).
2. Dig down till you hit a cave.
3. Put those fish cleaners and cheese makers in to work.
4. PROFIT!

Had a raven cause a dwarf to dodge off of one of my towers.
I had a raven that "smacked" a baby in the head. I bet the mother used the child as a makeshift club.
