Okay, so it sounds to me at dual wielding would be good if you are going 1 on 1 against an enemy with only melee.

What about if your dual-wielder was a high level in dodging and was fast? He could close the gap before the enemy could get very many shots, and could dodge the few shots that came by.

I'm going to test this in the arena. A competent crossbow goblin against a competent swordsdwarf with two swords and high dodging skills.

EDIT: Results are in.

unarmored swordsdwarf with double iron swords with competent dodger and swordsdwarf

Vs.

Unarmored goblin with wood crossbow and iron bolts with competent crossbowman and competent archer.

approx. 20 spaces apart.

Swordsdwarf took some damage, mostly in the form of torn flesh on his legs, but took some major damage to his lower body from 1 bolt tearing his muscle and getting stuck.

In the end, the goblin died.

DF Gameplay Questions / dual weapons: Is it worth it?
« on: June 10, 2011, 11:01:37 am »
I recently deleted both of my existing forts (They were doing well, but they became too disorganized, and I just got bored with it).

Early on, I usually equip my early militia with obsidian swords, if I have access to it. They will usually have either no shield or a wooden shield.

I started thinking: I am capable of equipping them with two obsidian swords. Is the tradeoff of defense worth the boost in attack strength?

I know that dual-wielding weapons gives some form of attack boost, but I don't know what form it is in. Exactly how does a dual weapon give a bonus? Is it higher attack speed? Do both weapons strike at the same time?

Please answer these questions, because I am starting a new fort and would like to know.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What are these "vessels" people speak of?

Time for some !!!SCIENCE!!!

I embarked around a volcano this time, so I'll make one of these "vessels" with a few animals in it and glass windows so they can see out, which will allow them to discover the area as they fall down :D

Now, should I send dogs or chickens down...

Okay, I will deactivate one of my farm plots. I actually butchered all my llamas and alpacas becuase I was getting plenty of cloth and thread from the pig tails in my farms.

Well I sort of expect anyone inside to be dead when they hit the bottom...

Unless magma or water makes things fall more slowly, of course. If it makes them fall more slowly, then I can totally see that working.

I guess it could also be used to drop the structure, then dig down under it or something to gain access to it.

NINJA EDIT: Oh. well then why do people do it?

I keep seeing people making posts about using vessels or something to go to the bottoms of volcanoes, or to go to the bottom of an ocean What are they talking about?

Do I simply make a building that hangs over an ocean or volcano and just detach it?

I have three 9x3 (or 9x4, can't remember) farms, which grow quarry bushes, cave wheat, and pig tails. I recently killed most of my larger animals, and am only using chickens, cows, and dogs for food.

A majority of this food might be from the recently butchered dozen animals though...

But still, I have far too much.

I might hook up a trap somehow to chain him up outside my fort, if I can figure out a way to get him outside safely. I will need to knock it out with a cave-in and knock it into a cage trap.

Okay, here is the description:

The Forgotten Beast Nusko Powugser has come! A huge quadraped composed of Aventurine. It has a long, swinging trunk and it has a bloated body. Beware it's deadly spittle!

Okay, I have 10 dwarves with crossbows using iron bolts, and I have 20 dwarves that are all partially armored with iron armor and have iron battle axes.

I think I will replace their battle axes with warhammers, considering it is composed of gem. This is, of course, only for if I need to take it on.

I have the caverns blocked off by a drawbridge that raises inward, so it can't be destroyed. There aren't any people in the caverns. Considering that it is made of GEMS, I will probably leave it down there

Nah, cook it into roasts - saves stockpile space as you make bigger stacks. It's less training but it sounds like you don't have a shortage of food anyway. Yes, do stop food production for a while but keep your food stockpile somewhere extremely conspicuous so you know to start it up again.

I think most of it IS cooked...

I don't know what to do here XD.

I have far too much food. I have over 1000 in food stores, and I don't know what to do with it.

Should I sell it all?

Should I continue stockpiling food, just in case? (I am currently working on a "vault" underneath my fort that would store tons of extra supplies.)

Should I stop making food for a while?
