Can dwarves even use two handed swords without being unnaturally large?

You can't have leather armor and a breastplate. They both have the [SHAPED] tag. Leather armor in the olden dayes o yore was boiled and shaped, which makes it rigid and tough. Its not like a leather jacket you buy at the "Discount Country Biker Barn, inc", down the street or whatever, so breastplates don't fit.

I go with leather armor and chainmail shirts.

Spears work, but they get stuck. Might try mining picks instead if you can get them in the uniform. They get stuck too, but not as badly and they are very lethal. If you pick a "sticky" weapon like spears, picks, swords, give them heavy shields like iron. They'll shield-bash if their weapon gets stuck.

I thought that copper was heavier than iron.

I would suggest making an arena to train your militart with.

put a few cages with Goblins, either naked or with what they have already. The advantage to disarming them is that they are very unlikely to hurt your military.

However, if your dwarves are skilled enough to kill them, even if they have weapons and armor, you should leave their equipment on. Your dwarves will get more experience that way.

I think I came up with a good almost all-iron uniform for organic forgotten beast fighting:

Iron helm, leather hood, leather armor, iron chest plate, iron chain mail, iron leggings, leather leggings, iron spear, copper shield.

Would this work well? The iron armor defends against physical attacks, the leather defends against blood and spittle and whatnot, and the spear is good because it can penetrate deep into the flesh.

I have an emergency alert set, but all I can make it do is bring the civilians inside.

I tried the wiki, but it's just too confusing for me.

621
I want to do this without manually setting them all to be there. How do I do that?

I know that I can restrict squads to burrows, but how do I set the people to go into the "emergency" burrow, and tell the archers to go to their "archers burrow" burrow?

622
these are my first good artifacts! I have no idea why, but I am totally psyched out about this XD

I edited the descriptions of both of them together into 1 picture:

So, how much do you think these would buff up an area?

Also, how would I put one of these into a meeting hall or something?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Ways to deal with migrants

If a migrant has no useful skills, I will set them to whatever I need at the time, then leave them with those skills.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How did you learn to play DF

Most of it I figured out myself, since that's the best way I learn.

I had a lot of help form this forums though! You guys are a very nice community when you aren't telling people to go hug the clowns.

625
Okay, I will make it into small, 2x2 rooms for each soldier, with an area just outside set for training.

Thanks for all the help people!

626
Okay, setting the surface level area of my fort as a barracks using beds. Should I make individual rooms for the soldiers, or just lay a bunch of beds out with a barracks setting around all of them?

In my latest fort, I have my military dwarves stationed just outside (idk why. Felt like getting them out of the way I guess.), and they keep flashing the thirst and hunger arrow. Will they automatically leave to get food, or do I need to cancel their commands for them to do that?

628
I don't quite understand what the bug is here...

CRAAAAP!

I had my 4 military dwarves chasing an elk bird, and 4 more showed up! I told them to go back to the fort, but they wouldn't run away!

Then I made the stupid mistake of canceling their orders. my legendary miner was butchered, and another soldier is badly wounded and can't move. I'm mass producing some beds right now so that I will have extras just in case someone else gets injured.

But I need miners.

These are my only 3 miners.

!!MIGRANTS!!

Once I get my next migrant wave I plan on setting a few people as miners.

Only problem is that all three of them are near legendary miners...

oh wait. -facepalm-

Okay, unassign mining as their job, equip them with iron picks (which I am working on getting right now) and use them as my military. Replace lost miners with migrant cheese makers and swimmers.

NINJA EDIT: One of them is legendary, the other 2 are close. As soon as i get some migrants to replace them as miners, I will equip them their picks.

Can I get some advice on whether or not I should attack the troll?

EDIT AGAIN: too late. the troll got bored and left.
