DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Question about temples
« on: May 13, 2016, 08:34:23 pm »
So by now I've approved the immigration of way too many interlopers, and they've brought with them all their different religions.  And there are TONS of religions in my fortress now.  We're like New York City without the atheists.

But now that I'm setting up a temple infrastructure to service the religiously inclined, I'm trying to figure out how to make these people happy without having to build three dozen temples.  Is the generic, catchall temple good enough to service these needs?  Should I try to pick the top five or so observed religions, give them all temples, then hope the Episcopalians don't start complaining about lacking a place of worship?  How much happiness do the niche religion-observers receive from attended the Unitarian church anyway?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Bee Justice
« on: February 24, 2015, 06:52:56 pm »
Well I decided to revamp how I do Justice.  I used to stick my prisoners on the inside of the caves, exposed to whatever may come along, but this proved frequently too lethal.  My new jails are now all exposed to sunlight, and consist of a single chain surrounded by beehives.  Bee stings, sunlight-induced vomiting, and general unhappiness levels are already up 234%!  Now that's efficiency.

Edit: My prisoner remains resilient, even peaceful.  He was irritated at being caught in the rain, but his patience is "as still as the waters."  He was interested in his own chain and door, though they're not of impressive quality.  He is, in this judge's opinion, a model prisoner.  Upon his release he will return to decadent quarters adorned with his favorite materials.  He will redeem his role to society by laboring in his own private workshop in the hopes of fulfilling his dreams of producing a masterwork.

But mark my words, the next prisoner will not get off so lightly.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Open spaces
« on: February 24, 2015, 04:23:48 pm »
I've noticed with the latest release I seem to encounter a number of floor spaces opening up if I dig just below the top z-level.  I'm assuming this is a result of tree roots.  Either I've failed to notice all of the open spaces or they just keep opening up, and I have to keep flooring over them like a game of whack-a-hole.  Has anyone else noticed this?  Should I just go ahead and floor over everything above my top floor as a preemptive measure?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Really stupid question about animal taming

If I've fully domesticated, say, a rattlesnake in an embark, can I embark with rattlesnakes in a future fort?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Goblin Monarch problems/bugs
« on: February 22, 2015, 10:02:29 am »
So my queen showed up, and she's a goblin.  No biggie, it happens.  The problem I've run into now is, I can't assign her any rooms.  In the unit screen she shows up as "tame," even though she's not listed with the pets or animals.

Am I just hosed here?  Will she snap because nobody ever gave her a room?

Edit: Looks like I can assign her to an animal pen, and to a burrow.  That seems to be all I can do with her.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Retiring forts and the Mountain King
« on: February 21, 2015, 10:53:50 pm »
I'm sure you can infer my question from the topic.  If I retire a fort that has become the capitol and start another fort, will that fort have the opportunity to become the capitol (assuming it's the same civilization)?  And if it does, after retiring that fort and assuming control of the old one, will the king be gone from the old one?

Cheers

General Discussion / The Hobbit Movie Thread™
« on: December 17, 2012, 12:25:26 am »
I'm not going to get into a lengthy review of the movie since I've got pretty mixed feelings about the whole affair, but it needs to be said: this is the Dwarfiest Fortressiest moviest movie I've ever seen.  The opener was 10 minutes of dwarfs building the mightiest richest dwarfiest fortress ever, only to have it ruined inexplicably by the catastrophic arrival of Smaug Silver Toes: The Waxing Gibbon of Desecration or whatever his megabeast equivalent name would be.

More importantly, they got the dwarfs entirely right.  The body proportions, the personalities, the drunkenness, the hatred of pussy elves, their fighting prowess; it was just damn cool watching a whole threefuckinghours of dwarfs being dwarfs.  I guess what I'm trying to say is I LOVE DWARFS.  If you love dwarfs, you'll probably enjoy this movie.  If you're easily bothered by the fact that they could've fit the whole story into one movie if Peter Jackson didn't insist on just making up 90 minutes of pointless crap that wasn't in the book, then go watch it anyway FOR THE DWARFS.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Super wide river
« on: May 22, 2012, 07:00:46 pm »
I don't really know what to make of this.  I just genned my first world under the new update, embarked on a river, only to discover it's really really wide.  I know this isn't particularly earth-shattering, but I've just never seen one quite like this...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Has anyone encountered a river this wide before?

DF Modding / Tobacco?
« on: May 10, 2012, 01:58:34 pm »
Through raws tampering, is it feasible to produce a plant that can be milled or processed into tobacco products, and consumed in such a fashion that it doesn't fulfill any basic eating or drinking needs, but grants happy thoughts?

I haven't tinkered with raws enough to know if this is even possible, but if it is, I'd definitely give it a whack.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / [SOLVED] Marksdwarfs won't pick up ammo.
« on: April 02, 2012, 07:25:01 pm »
EDIT:  Okay, I figured it out.  The militia captain had died, and nobody would pick up ammo until a new one was assigned.  Good enough.

Yes, I realize there are several topics on this subject.  I've looked over all that I came across, but this problem isn't getting fixed for me.

I've got a bunch of marksdwarfs patrolling across an ammo stockpile and onto fortifications, facing dozens of goblins.  Nobody fires, nobody picks up any ammo, nobody cares.  I know they're in range and CAN fire, because they had done so previously.  They've all got quivers, they're all able to use every type of bolt I have available, and hunters have had their ammo removed in the military screen, and their hunting labor disabled.

I tried forbidding all the ammo on the map for a few ticks, then unforbidding.  I've tried yelling at the dwarfs.  These things have not helped.

Any ideas?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Migrants with "Teacher" skill...
« on: April 01, 2012, 12:14:05 pm »
I've never seen one.  Ever.  It's the only skill that migrants seem to be totally unable to obtain.  And since I've no clue how to train it up, is it possible this is the most valuable skill to embark with just out of scarcity's sake?

Looking through the list of justice dispensed by my Hammerer, 'Brick Fingers' Monomotung, it occurred to me that the only use Hammerers get in well-managed forts is to put vampires down.

If that's how it's gonna be, someone should really mod in a preferred weapon for Hammerers - WOODEN STAKES.  While we're at it, we may as well mod Hammerers to be properly titled "Vampire Hunter."

Just a thought, anyway.

I'm building a floor tile outside, and I've gotten several "item blocking site" failures for the area.  Weird thing is, there are no items there.  I even channeled out the area just to make sure there is nothing on the spot.

What could be causing this?

DF General Discussion / Goblinite vs Vampirinite... Vampinite?
« on: March 17, 2012, 03:13:41 pm »
After putting down three vampires in my latest fortress, I'm left with a MASSSSSIIIIIVVVVVE stockpile of crafts made with human bones.  I mean, huuuuuge.  Come to think of it, the last few fortresses have had similar issues.

I had to quadruple my stockpile size and stop murdering elven caravans just to make room for everything.

Granted, none of these are useful outside of trading, but clearly vampires are a rich source of marketable commodities rather than just a nuisance!
