Dunno if this has ever been asked before, although knowing this forum it probably has.  Search function be damned.

Would it be possible to set up a danger room in fortress mode on an infinite repeater, abandon the fort, then plug an adventurer into the danger room shortly thereafter?  Or would abandoning the fortress totally disable whatever initiated the infinite repeater in the first place...

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Looking for some pointers...
« on: June 19, 2011, 10:04:01 pm »
So, I've been toying around with adventure mode for the first time, in anticipation of the next DF release.  I'm pleasantly surprised to discover adventure is great fun.  I think I've grasped most of the vital concepts, and approach fights strategically rather than just rushing in.  However, I still end up getting mauled after completing a few quests, even as a demigod level character. The beauty of Dwarf Fortress is that there's no one good way to do something, but many good ways, and many many many bad ways.  I feel like I've stumbled through quite a few of the bad.  I've made a good read of the wiki, and floated around on the forums, but am still somewhat in the dark on what people are doing to achieve long-lasting heroes.

I typically focus on strength and agility, with a touch here and there of whatever the wiki says is important.  Thus far, I go for training in bladed weapons, shields, dodging, and a bit of fighting.  I aim attacks, going for the easiest limbs to lop off, or the head when it's most viable.  I also throw a lot of rocks.  I like throwing rocks.  Ask any teacher I had in grade school.

This being Dwarf Fortress, I expect and appreciate challenges and learning curves.  Of course, Dwarf Fortress also comes with its kinks, bugs, and imbalances that result in thrown fluffy wamblers exploding the extremities of bronze colossi.  That said, what am I missing that provides for sustainable adventuring?  Do I need to grind for a couple hours to better my skills?  Am I hopeless until I've somehow acquired Dwarf-fitting armor?  Should I limit my initial skill focuses so that I'm a ludicrously good dodger that can't do much else very well?

Thanks for any advice.

This is something I've noticed in virtually every worldgen I've ever run through Legends Viewer.  On the map view of Legends Viewer, Dwarven civs are typically small and sequestered. But jumping back exactly one year in time reveals that the civ was much more expansive.  It seems that Dwarfs die off the last year of my worldgens, regardless of other variables (including how old the world is).  Am I just reading this thing wrong or is there something to this?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How can I view an animal's kills?

Or do I have to just guess by the unique blood splatters covering its body?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Need a little help with the raws
« on: June 12, 2011, 08:58:20 am »
Having avoided messing with raws thusfar, other than altering animals to make them tameable and trainable as war animals, I still have some questions.

I've got a war tiger stationed outside the fort, who rather heroically fended off two goblin ambushes before plummeting a stream with several goblins.  The tiger killed two more of the gobbos, and somehow managed to pull himself out of the stream JUST before the waterfall sent the remaining gobs to their deaths.

My question is, if I wanted to train this tiger up to be super tough, would it be as simple as adding the [can_learn] tag to his raw, or does that only apply to sapient creatures?  Also, is it possible to equip him with armor after some tinkering?

Thanks.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Trying to understand Elven Traders...
« on: June 04, 2011, 02:10:48 pm »
So they're happy to give away wooden barrels and goods made of wood, but they get furious if I do the same?  Is this one of those "hot girls in miniskirts get angry at you for staring even though they dress like they totally want you to" deals, or is there something else I'm missing..

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What do your royal suites look like?

I've floated between a few variations, but haven't pinned down anything sufficiently grand.  Looking for some inspiration.  What do you do?

Any ideas on how to accomplish this?  I've caged friendly traders before, somehow by accident.  I'm sure there's a way.  Perhaps if I can throw him in a tantrum while he's standing on a cage trap..

[6/5/11] Thanks to the tip on cave ins, my mayor is now on display in my central meeting hall.  Other nobles shall certainly follow.

Death is too good for them.  They must be humiliated in front of the entire Dwarven society!  Let the Zoo of Nobles begin!

DF Suggestions / Profession-specific burrows/beds/rooms
« on: May 31, 2011, 01:48:35 pm »
Much like we have the ability to set a workshop to be usable only by dwarfs with the right skill levels, or how stockpiles allow you to move items to specific rooms based on specific criteria, would it not make sense to be able to assign dwarfs to different rooms by profession?  By default, everyone would maintain their current behavior, where they just sleep in the nearest free bed.

My reasoning for this is that if my magma forges are 50 to 150 z levels beneath everything else, short of assigning each furnace operator to a specific bed, it would make more sense to just sort it out by profession.  This would drastically reduce tedium IMO.

Thoughts?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What is this I don't even
« on: May 28, 2011, 12:44:25 am »
So in response to a mood dwarf, I begrudgingly set up a glass smelter, and then a second for someone to actually make the glass for which the mood dwarf was asking.

I'm assuming the sand bag chosen by Urist McGlassmaker doubled as a seed bag somehow, because suddenly everyone in my fort is hauling seeds out of my storage and all the way to the bag...

I was totally confused for a few minutes while I tried to figure out why a hundred dwarfs would be dumping prickle berry seeds on my glass furnace!

DF Gameplay Questions / Why can't I trade my mugs...
« on: May 24, 2011, 08:49:35 pm »
I've got something like 500+ mugs in my trade goods stockpile on my new embark.  Whenever traders come along, none of these mugs show up on my "move goods to depot" screen.  I've got my bookkeeper working round the clock, but my broker is a noob at everything.  Could that be effecting things?

None of these should be forbidden or inaccessible.  Actually, the depot is right next to the stockpile.  Thoughts?  Edit: Also, no mandates on exports.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Um.. Thank you?

Humans just stopped by for a trade.  Their doofy diplomat cornered my mayor just to compliment us on our spiffy fort.  Is this event meaningless or does it signal something useful?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / When do you abandon your fortresses?
« on: May 19, 2011, 05:30:11 pm »
For me, I'm usually done once I hit around 200 dwarfs.  By then, my new fortress layout (it's always a new layout) has been well implemented, and there's usually something substantial I don't like about it and have lost interest in.  My military's pretty stacked.  My artifacts depicting that time I threw a goblin down a hole are sitting in their obscure corners.  The caves have been breached and searched for greater challenges.  By this point, I'm ready to move on and try something different.

You?  And if you do continue past this point, what goals do you implement to keep you interested?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / I will KILL my broker.
« on: May 17, 2011, 10:39:42 pm »
The humans arrived for trading, and I had a ton of stuff to unload.  Once my dwarfs dropped off all the trade items at the depot, I summoned my broker.

And waited.

...

Broker is on break.

Okay, I'll wait for that to be up.

Broker is filling waterskin.

Fair enough.

Broker is sleeping.

I get that.

Broker is on break.

...I thought you just did that..

Broker is filling waterskin.

..Didn't you..

Broker is on break.

....You're fired.

What's the best way to dispose of this bum?  Put him in my cyclops pit?
