DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best Fortress Security Designs
« on: March 02, 2012, 03:20:03 pm »
A bridge spans a pit, both sides have fortified archer positions.  This way if baddies are coming up from the caves, dwarfs can take shelter above.  If gobbos are coming down from the surface, dorfs can seal themselves below.
What will you do in the eventuality that both happen at the same time?
Heh heh.  Well usually I'll have security floors between exposed cavern levels and the surface.  I try to keep militias stationed by entrances to minimize surprise break-ins.

Actually, several months ago I made a totally self-contained unit for all my best masons/metalsmiths/farmers/etc called "The Hive."  Once the farms got up and running I raised the bridges and nobody could get in or out.  The lower levels of the Hive were vast storerooms of gems, stones, and ores.  The only time dorfs could enter the Hive was to deliver goodies from the mines outside.

Members of the Hive toiled away, creating the finest weapons, furniture, goods, even booze - and only they could enjoy the fruits of their labor.

That fort ended in a vicious battle with FPS death, but was probably the most ridiculously wealthy fort I've ever made.  It also was a rather tedious affair, but I guess that's the point of the game.

I used to make a Hall of Heroes: coffins designated for my starting seven.  Now I make masterwork iron-laden rooms for my best militia dorfs and metal workers.

Typically the scrubs and newcomers live in the levels closer to the surface while the most skilled and accomplished craftsdorfs live below.

I also typically armor up some newbies and send them out on a "camping trip" in the caves for a while.  Whoever makes it back gets to not die in the caves!

Externally I'll usually have a moat, bridge, and archery towers.  Typically I'll make a couple layers of security well inside the fortress depths as well.

Thanks.  I actually just abandoned and embarked on a terrifying glacier with no aquifer.  Those are more Fun.  Eventually I'll go back and try to figure out what went wrong with channeling from the surface.

After losing a miner to the ice I'm amazed at how much I still have to learn about Dwarven pathing.

Also..  I'm still not able to channel through, even though it's exposed to sunlight.  I made a 7x7 hole all the way to the surface, but the aquifer level fills and freezes and fills again.  I think I'll just drop a plug.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Pumping out a glacial aquifer?

I'm attempting to pump my way through an aquifer just beneath a glacier.  Problem is, once the water is pumped, it immediately freezes on level with the pump.  I suppose I could try building a plug and knocking through the aquifer that way, but the clock is ticking and supplies are running low.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Yeah, I'm not really planning on updating to .04... are the crashes on worldgen frequent if you don't export any images?
I've encountered this crash several times, but only when exporting images.  You probably don't need to worry about it.

.03...
Yeah....03....
I get the idea guys!  :P
Same deal as always. Will have to wait for a few things to update. Yes, I know Mayday and Phoebus are updated.

Therapist thread says it's up to date as well.

I've never posted on these boards.  I've only just registered today to ask you charmers to be patient, or at least polite.  It's like you're at a bar asking the swamped bar tender for another drink, only you don't get it right away, so you say, "...drink... drink."  Once you get the drink you wont even tip to be sure.

That is all.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Finding sewer entrances?
« on: February 26, 2012, 11:24:40 pm »
I believe some quests are bot completable even if you do find an entrance, because I believe not every sewer system is completely connected.
Yeah I had to hunt through multiple entrances actually.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Finding sewer entrances?
« on: February 26, 2012, 10:44:25 pm »
I've read a couple other topics on this and I'm still confused.  I can't seem to find an entrance by walking around a town, but I see the grates everywhere.  I've got a quest that I'm quite sure needs to be completed in the sewer, but I've searched this place for waaay too long and no dice.

I'd really appreciate some help with this, thanks!
