DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best Fortress Security Designs
« on: March 02, 2012, 03:20:03 pm »Heh heh. Well usually I'll have security floors between exposed cavern levels and the surface. I try to keep militias stationed by entrances to minimize surprise break-ins.A bridge spans a pit, both sides have fortified archer positions. This way if baddies are coming up from the caves, dwarfs can take shelter above. If gobbos are coming down from the surface, dorfs can seal themselves below. What will you do in the eventuality that both happen at the same time?
Actually, several months ago I made a totally self-contained unit for all my best masons/metalsmiths/farmers/etc called "The Hive." Once the farms got up and running I raised the bridges and nobody could get in or out. The lower levels of the Hive were vast storerooms of gems, stones, and ores. The only time dorfs could enter the Hive was to deliver goodies from the mines outside.
Members of the Hive toiled away, creating the finest weapons, furniture, goods, even booze - and only they could enjoy the fruits of their labor.
That fort ended in a vicious battle with FPS death, but was probably the most ridiculously wealthy fort I've ever made. It also was a rather tedious affair, but I guess that's the point of the game.
