DF Gameplay Questions / Migrant Child's Parents?

Any way to tell which parents belong to a child when they migrate in?

Also, do simgle mothers come with a baby and then shack up with a male dwarf in the fortress, or is it safe to assume a migrant woman that came with a baby and living in a room with a male dwarf, that he's the father?  (This may be moot - DO women migrate with babies or just children?)

Trying to figure out some genealogy as my fortress has exploded with kids and I wanted to assign them huts next to thier families - or send them all on a treasure hunt in that damp, mud-soaked room...

DF Gameplay Questions / Caged Goblins

I have seven goblin snatchers in cages that I'm planning devious ends to, but I have a few questions.

They don't seem to need upkeep while in the cage - they never go hungry/thirsty.  If I let them out to mill about a closed room, with they eventually die?

If I lob them down a 16-story pit, will the cage be destroyed on impact and kill the goblin, or will it survive as long as its in the cage?

Will they drown while in the cage?

I'd just drop them in magma vent, but that'd destroy all the free clothes my dwarves are so fond of...

What does a well do for you that exposed water won't?

I was preparing to build a well and had water channeled underground to a holding tank.  I channeled one tile out where the well would go.

Since I didn't have any chains yet, I just let the hole alone and designated it as a water collection zone.

I noticed the dwarves all drank from it when I ran out of booze.

So, why do I actually need a well?

Do cave rivers spawn cave spiders, or just chasms?  I'm talking about the vermin type spider, not the GCS.  It would make looking for a site much easier if I didn't have to look for one feature or another.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarven Tunnels

In reference to the roadworks being put in, when the dwarves have tunnels to a site, does this mean that if I choose a spot overlapping a tunnel at embark it will have access to this?

Will the dwarven caravans use this tunnel instead of spawning on a random elevation?

Am I ahead of myself?

Trade Liason still can't make his way back out of the fortress from different z-levels.

He went berserk and the dogs killed him.  They tore a lot of chunks out of him.
The chunks seems to rot too fast - they pretty much instantly spewed forth miasma.

DF Bug Reports / [33g] Well Overflow

I installed a well a few stories below the river.  Right next to the river is a floodgate that stops the flow of water.

The river thawed before I realized it, and the water began to flow (the gate was open so it could fill my 3x3 resevoir just below the well).

When I noticed it, the well was overflowing.  No problem, I thought, I'll just close the floodgate.

It closes, but the water keeps coming out of the well.  A few of the lower levels the fort have already filled up and I don't see any stop in sight.

Seems that if a well overflows, it keeps producing water.

I'm quoting myself here after I figured out that kids aren't automatically released after being bagged and then the goblin gets caged.  I know I've seen some bug reports of kids dying and people can't find the bodies.  I did.  Not sure if it should be considered a bug, but maybe kids should be autoreleased if a goblin gets caged.

I found out what actually happened with the bucket. I just had a child die of starvation. The goblin was caged AFTER it had bagged the child. I didn't strip the goblin, so the kid remained in the bag, in the cage. The bucket was there because the dwarves were giving the kid water.

Hadn't notice caravans bringing caged corpses in awhile, but it seems all civs are currently bringing me dead animals.  I'm in a freezing area.  Not sure if this is a new/reintroduced bug.

This may or may not be a bug - I seached this forum for it, but didn't get anything.

Cinnabar.  Its in veins like ore.  Its rough icon is ore.  Its mined version is ore.  Yet it gets piled in a stone (non metal/economic) stockpile and used in workshops as stone.

I'm assuming its supposed to be 'ore of mercury' or somesuch, but its not shown as having any use in its 'k' screen.

***On another note of useless items, my Armorer just went fey and made a copper shoe...

***Edit: after reading some more on Cinnabar, it appears it can also be a dye, and the mercury part of it seems it might be an alchemy workshop item...

DF Bug Reports / Elf Caravan Overweight w/ Dead Animals

2nd Year the Elf caravan arrived and brought a caged stray Cow corpse and a caged stray Bear corpse.  The caravan was also horribly overweight.  They did, however, manage to pack everything up and carry it off.  I wasn't able to trade with them because I couldn't afford to buy the heavy stuff with what I had to trade with at the time.

They did arrive from the direction of high mountains - could the caged animals have died by freezing while crossing over?

DF Bug Reports / [33g] Led goblin captives trigger traps

I had a goblin escape and make it back outside the fortress.

Oddly enough, a brewer chased him down and began leading him back inside like any other tame animal.

However, when they crossed over a row of cage traps at the entrance, the gobbo triggered it, but was not caged.

I know he wasn't tame, but since he was being led (a subdued state, I guess) he really shouldn't be triggering the trap.

DF Bug Reports / [38b] Kitten thrown in magma lives

I'm still using 38b, but I didn't see any major update since then.  This may be related to bug# 788 & 829.

Received a kitten birth message and promptly made my water resevoir a pit and designated the kitten to be tossed in.  I did this several times, but it kept climbing out.

I then changed the pit to be over an exposed magma channel and tossed it in there.  It just stood there - its still there now (I guess this is proof cats ARE some sort of demon...).

I threw in two other kittens (without having tossed them in water first) and they properly burned up.

The channel is used for tossing in poorly made furniture, and nothing has survived but that damned kitten.  Its just sitting in the channel looking all innocent.  I've even thrown some rock furniture on top of it to mash it down, but the furniture melts and the kitten stays.

Have save - I have all saves from start of fortress - will have to see if I can reproduce it in an earlier save.
Tempeture is on.

He burned up upon save/restart DF.
Toady, let me know if the saves will even help.

DF Bug Reports / [33g] Dwarf in justice went Fey before release

I had a dwarf sent to prison for violation of a mayor's mandate.  She served her sentence, but before she was released from the chains, she went fey.  Because of this state change, no one ever came to release her so she could claim a workshop.  She eventually went beserk and had to be shot after she killed someone coming to give her water.

DF Suggestions / Trade Depot Totals

Did a quick search, but didn't see this one:

At the trade depot, it would be quite helpful to simply give the total value of all goods on both sides (not total marked, but total possible for trade on both sides) instead of having to mark the entire list to see this.
