DF Community Games & Stories / The Book of the Wind
« on: December 06, 2017, 09:51:44 am »
The book of the wind sounds nice.

This is a puddingstone-bound codex.
The written portion consists of a 89 page manual entitled The Book of the Wind, authored by As Copperheated.  It concerns the forces that govern wind patterns.  The writing is very rigid.  Overall, the prose is amateurish at best.

The codex was written in 116 in Goaltrumpets and stored in The Oracular Sanctuary there.

In 158, The Deified Sacks made a copy of the original from The Oracular Sanctuary in Goaltrumpets of The Mythical Labors, keeping it within The Homes of Teaching in Theaterwaves.

In the late summer of 250, at the founding of Southhold, the original was stolen from The Oracular Sanctuary by the dwarf Shem Theateremerald.

It came to be stored in The White Library of Southhold in the midsummer of 254.

DF Community Games & Stories / Welcome to The White Library of Southhold
« on: December 05, 2017, 11:17:52 pm »
Within the Kingdom of Lashing, at its southernmost point in The Jungles of Shaking, lies the human fortress of Southhold, controlled by The Renowned Fellowship.

At the direction of Moto Hopfolded, first lord of Southhold, a library and scriptorium was built entirely out of dolomite and dubbed The White Library.  Scholars from near and far research the history and happenings of The Legendary Continent.

These codices and scrolls are available for your work:

The list will be updated periodically when new items are available.

You can read a work, and once complete, read a new title or follow-up with something from what you just read (a person, place, event, item, etc. - topics will be underlined).

Where would you like to start?

It is absurd.

I hit about 250 in year 8.  They were 3 deep per square in the tavern.

My military was top notch by then, so I just designated the entire tavern with a kill order.

What a bloodbath.  While the massacre ensued, more happily arrived, along with performers and troupes and such.  I gathered so many codices and other artifacts that they just kept brining with them.

Something certainly needs to be done about it.

OK, now I have a different problem... I have an artifact that shows on the display list.  I displayed it on a pedestal, took it off to move it, and now it won't display anywhere else.  It is sitting in the stockpile and all it will give is a "Job item lost or destroyed" message.

Any ideas from other artifact-displayers?

Yes, it seems if you stopped displaying it, some flag isn’t being cleared, as you can never display it again.  Happened to all my original books when I moved my library.  Now they just sit on the floor and all the jobs to display them show inactive.   Tried forbidding, deconstructing, display one at a time, etc.  the only ones that will display are new ones.

DF Announcements / Re: Dwarf Fortress 0.44.02 Released

Will the next, bugfix-y release break save compatibility? And will the crash on entering some hamlets in worlds with long history be fixed?

Your crashing was related to your modding.  Problems with body parts, materials and tissues invite crashes.

I was not around to play when it first came out...but who really did?

*raises hand*

Have you discovered the joys of digging out a cavern larger than 7x7?

I built all my forts with grids of pillars for a couple of years after the 3D version came out, until I discovered I didn't need to!

HAHA! Memories...I still eye wells suspiciously.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: THE HORSES HAVE RETURNED!

Also, I'm not so sure about taxes, especially with single-threaded process. The sheer amount of CPU power required would crush the game. I suppose people would be disabling taxes just to avoid that, like they sometimes disable temperature.

We already had a tax collector in the old economy.  He would take a couple guards and go to peoples' rooms and take some of the crap they accumulated as tax.

It was neat.  I miss those small aspects that have been disappearing over the releases.  Can't wait for them to return in some form.

Yeah, 41 citizens and 191 guests.

I wonder what the factors are...

I topped out at about 180-some visitors after about 2 years.  They then quit coming and eventually started leaving over the next year.  Down to just under 100 now.

My 80 pop cap fort has 80 citizens...

...and 171 visitors...

Do you have a military set to carry rations?

In any event, Toady allowed for ownership flags to be removed after awhile on items not stored (liked dropped food), so that’s probably why it took them awhile before they hauled it away - didn’t have anything to do with your stockpile (unless the first wasn’t reachable).

It didn't say it was left in a site, it listed the name of the Ettin, so it must have been held.  I'll have to tell him to raid said site this time instead, and see if that works. Though he may need a bit more training before he's ready to take on such a task.

It won't work, most likely.

Quote:
"There was a last-minute hiccup with artifacts known to be held by people (rather than stored on sites); these fort-mode missions will be fruitless for the moment; the most common instance here is books authored by people that then hang on to them, so don't try to steal their books! It says on the map screen when an artifact is held by somebody, so it should be easy to avoid."

29
I don't BELIEVE so

You would know as soon as you made the mission - it would state "last held by" or somesuch, instead of "last in".

I only asked because Toady said there were problems with held items, but he particularly mentioned books, so I was wondering if this was a manifestation of that.

Was the artifact being held by the cyclops when you sent your guy after it?
