DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / "Group Symbol" edits Civ Symbol?
« on: December 31, 2022, 08:35:11 pm »
After picking up the Steam edition of DF lately I've realised that the "Group Symbol" option on the embark screen doesn't work as I'd expected. I'd hoped to create a symbol for the embark group as named by the player; instead it creates the symbol for the entire civ they're from. Is this how it's meant to be?

I can see some arguments in favour of the current implementation, eg. if your dorfs are going to be carving the kingdom's symbol everywhere most players might want to have some control of it, but I find it odd the player can alter something present in the world prior to embark, and I'd rather create a symbol for my faction.

Anyone checked out the latest version yet? I just got a steam key from humble bundle.

Now maybe I'll actually figure out how to make something in the shipyard...

I think it's just the change in the module-snap feature (attach one point to anywhere, rather than to another point) coupled with the lack of a symmetry option (yet) and new camera controls, but I'm actually finding it far harder to build stuff than the last release of the shipyard stand-alone. This is frustrating, as it looks like the rest of the game-so-far has been substantially improved. Hopefully these things will be fixed up soon.

Backers received an update on the 20th saying they needed as much coverage as possible - turns out a lot of the fans were pretty damn passionate and all of them flooded a bunch of news sites. RPS, GiantBomb, that Kotaku place etc. Same day another update was posted entitled "Please stop sending emails".
Shame, as it seems like a perfect match for RPS' fanbase, but it was probably what sparked their change of stance on Kickstarter projects, so they're unlikely to talk about it before the timer runs out.

Greed: Black Border is a SciFi ARPG.
The upcoming KRATER is a party-based ARPG with a Borderlands-ish setting.
Oh, and Borderlands is SciFi, of course.

The hilariously titled Divine Divinity is actually fairly clever on the RPG side of things, but still has that hack/slash/loot business you want. It runs well on modern systems and even adapts to widescreen resolutions (unlike a certain Blizzard game), so it still looks better than those screens might suggest. Playing a ranger I found it fairly difficult at the start - constantly having to run like hell. Great game. Do it.
No idea what the sequel, Beyond Divinity, is like, but it exists.

Dropping the isometric perspective, the most recent game in the series, Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga is quite good as a hack-and-slash, though it lacks some of the depth of modern RPGs - think of it as a Diablolike zoomed in, rather than a compeditor to Elder Scrolls or Dragon Age, and you'll be fine. It got a bit of bad press, but I really enjoyed it. Just be sure to get this bundled edition, rather than the original & expansion standalones, as it was a botched release and they didn't play well together. Non-spoiler: You can turn into a dragon. Really. Also, this is the upcoming spinoff... The dragons wear jetpacks... I'm not even kidding.

There's also Silverfall and its expansion. The expansion is excellent as, amongst other things, it overhauls the UI from atrocious to decent. Open-classed party-based ARPG with a steampunk setting and a magic/nature vs tech/industry debate (but with no clear good/bad dichotomy, just fundamentalists on both sides) that your character will pretty much swing the balance of. Steam-powered goblin dragon tanks. What's not to like?

So RPS-favoured platformer InMomentum, plus its soundrack, is going for $whatever here for the next few days to raise funds for their next project, an ARPG called Dilogus, as well as donating to Child's Play. If they get their target, $7,500, contributors will receive:
Quote
the Dilogus-The Winds of War Insider Bonus which includes special access to Dilogus as it develops, including concept art, level designs, music, prototypes and Pre-Release of the game before it officially launches!
They haven't made much of a dint on their target yet, though, and only about 100 hours remain.

Necro'd for new information -

So the "Initiation Station" character creator is now live for those with promo codes, which were bundled with Red Faction: Armageddon.
However, there's also a way to claim a limited number of access keys through GameSpot (free GS account required) links are here: X360, PS3, and PC (steam).
I'd recommend the PC version simply because there's no link to it on the main site and I had to guess at the URL to get to it, so I'm assuming there've been less keys claimed.

The Creator features a Spore-like ability to share your characters on the Saints Row website, and similar rating/tagging community features.

Had a bit of fun with it so far, though I've noticed that the layering of clothes has been significantly cut back from SR2. Also missing is the ability to set default facial expression. Hoping that this is just due to it being a limited demo. Despite this I've had a bit of fun with the creator so far - you can see my abominations here. It's also good to see the stylised graphics in action - they look fantastic.

Anyone know if there's any world generators out there for floating islands/planets?
I want to make a world where I fly around in a zeppelin harvesting resources from the sky and expanding my flying fortress.

I've been running FlyingIslands alongside Technic without any problems. It's not completely what you're after, but it takes hemispheres of the ground and shifts them up into the sky, leaving a crater. It's apparently fairly customisable, too. Youtube preview here.

Plus a lot of things that we've probably stopped looking at as bugs or even oversights - like having no straightforward way to muddy/irrigate a surface. If I want to pour water onto the floor, I shouldn't have to dig a hole through the roof.

I'd just made it to vegas at lvl 22 (after hitting Big MT at lvl 8 and drowning in xp) when I found a comparitively new mod that looked so entirely awesome I had to restart for a dedicated build.
In short, I simply can't recommend the legendary TalkieToaster's RobCo Certified enough.
A series of perks that allow you to reanimate and modify defeated vanilla robot enemies, as well as providing tools to buff them. The real fun, though, begins with the mad scientist perks which allow you to cobble together absurd robotic friends out of junk and the harvested brains of your enemies.

RPs well with the RobCo start from Starting Gear Packs (though I suggest downloading the old pre-merged version, as selecting RobCo gives you Red Racer gear by mistake).

I nabbed this as soon as I read it was out.
I'll save on repetition by saying that I agree with all of Haschel's comments. Suffice to say that this game is going to be a bit divisive, comparable to pre-patch S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Precursors, or White Gold.
I've only given it less than an hour so far, and much of that was spent trying to tweak the controls to a more fluid layout as it's fairly unintuitive. The tutorial consists of of a series of videos that the game reminds you to watch whenever you need to do something new, and most are either blindingly obvious or don't really explain themselves too well. The dialogue is atrocious, and the plot so far is utterly impenetrable. But overall my scattered impressions are more positive than critical; here are some reasons I am enjoying it so far:
The maps have a style to them that I find entirely appealing. Wide open spaces, insanely lofted ceilings, and bold contrasts.
Jumping off a small ridge will make you land with a massive thud and cloud of dust, which gives a great reminder to the fact you're wearing heavy armour.
I hacked a raider's brain and, while he was screaming in terror, made him turn and gun down his baffled comrade. Then I fried him.

I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it more when I'm not juggling it with Old World Blues, as it's much too easy to draw unfair comparisons (why can't I loot that corpse? what do you mean I can only carry as much as I could actually carry?).
If you're willing to invest time and money into something that's not particularly slick or intuitive, but will be rewarding in the long term, I'd say E.Y.E. is worth it. And hey, you play DF, right?

The RFG lag spikes/stuttering can be fixed by changing the priority of the game process in task manager. It's something that should've been patched out, and requires a third-party app to save the priority, but it's certainly not insurmountable.

I played through Prey just recently, after hearing about the sequel. It has its moments, but it has its dreary trudge through samey corridors and repetitive puzzles, too.
Prey 2 looks far more like my kind of game. And yes, the trailer is brilliant. From the screenshots it appears to have captured the best bits of Prey (such as the visual design) and spliced it with Blade Runner. I'm basically sold on a collector's edition already.
