DF Gameplay Questions / Re: DF 2012v0.34 question and answer thread
« on: June 08, 2012, 07:06:06 pm »
I checked my stock and there are lots of crowns and sceptres and alike, but I can't see them anywhere in the list to move to the depot.

What's going on? Has something changed in this area?

Has your mayor banned the export of certain craft types? Bins containing any banned items are excluded from the transfer screen, but can be included with [m]. If not, crafts etc. will be in "Finished Goods" bins which you can find by [s]earching for "fin". You can examine the exact contents of the bins in the transfer screen.

If you set up a stockpile next to your depot that takes only your intended trade goods, this will save you time in the long run.

I don't even have an Mayor yet, its too early. Just an expedition leader who hasn't made any bans and alike.
It seems quite odd, but if no one else is having this problem it must be something I did, or didn't do, relating to the storage piles?
But why they are not visible to transfer to the depot at all is strange. Even if they are stuck in the workshop then they should be available to move to the Depot? *sigh*

Edit: Okay, an elvish caravan just showed up (the previous was dwarven) and my my crafts were all sitting in bins under the craft category in the transfer to Depot list. Very odd. Oh well. its better now. :)

I haven't played DF for a few months. I just downloaded the latest version and started playing again.

All was going well until the first caravan showed up. I went to transfers the usual things that I create for trade - cut gems and stone crafts. But only the gems (along with all the "normal" stuff) appeared in the list to transfer to the trade depot.

I was surprised to see wheelbarrows too, but that's another story... :)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: DEEP mining accident - SPOILER

I used a different approach that took a little preparation - divide and conquer.

I made a series of linked rooms, each separated by a lever-controlled drawbridge.
I then opened all the bridges except the closest one and let the demons wander in and spread out reasonably evenly - maybe six per room.
I then closed all the draw bridges and opened the closest room with my 4 squads of well trained and fully steel armoured dwarfs waiting on the other side.

When one room was cleared I would move on to the next.
Sometimes a dwarf would die, and commonly a couple would end up in hospital, but it works quite well.

I had to repeat the entire process many times before there were only scattered demons beyond the discovery point, rather than a angry horde trying to get to me through my initial defensive drawbridge.
And I had lots of reserve dwarves in training all the time to take up the places of the fallen.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: List of Vampire Facts
« on: March 13, 2012, 08:54:59 pm »
Apologies if this has already been posted here in this 16 page thread (or elsewhere in the forum).

I have found a reasonably simple way of finding the vampires in my fortress.
I always set up nice bedrooms for my dwarves. I like them to be happy and have a room each.
I declare the room as a bedroom and let a sleepy dwarf claim it when they are ready.

I have found that vampires never claim a bedroom. So once I get an announcement that there has been a blood drained body found I go to an empty bedroom and use the assign option. Any adult dwarf that has not claimed a room is instantly under suspicion. I then go view them and if they have a large list of previous memberships then (via a solo squad assignment) they get a nice little walled up room with a statue of their own to keep them company.  :)

Are they on a stair or ramp or something?

Yes, looking more closely the flashing ones are all on ramps. That will make them flash?

Are they flashing to little dots? Could be vermin.

No, its flashing to show the pile symbol below - in this case the equals sign.

And there is only one different bit of refuse on each square.

The flashing items are probably corpses of megabeasts. Corpses of normal creatures won't blink, I'm not sure about elite goblins and the like.

No, its early in the game right now. All I've killed is wild animals, tame critters, and vermin. Its the little "z" characters that are the left over bits that are flashing. But there is no pattern to them either as the original source or the current item. Some are just "remains" some are skulls, etc....

DF Gameplay Questions / Flashing items
« on: October 30, 2011, 08:38:48 pm »
Hi All,

I've been wondering about this for a long time, and still haven't worked it out by myself.
I'm sure there is a really simple answer, and I'll kick myself when someone tells me...

On my refuse pile, some items flash on and off, while others remain steady. What do the flashing ones mean?

Known issue:  Bug #4692.

Ok, thanks Dwarfu. It looks like I'll just have to ignore them and hope they don't get too unhappy with having no throne room etc...
If I can assign them to the military then they may have to have an "unfortunate" encounter with something big and nasty.

DF Gameplay Questions / My Queen is a pet?
« on: October 15, 2011, 06:02:19 pm »
I finally got around to bribing the King (actually a queen) to come and make my current Fortress their home.

I got the message about them arriving with their entourage. And looked in the noble list to see they are now there. All good so far.
I tried to assign the nice throne room and alike that I had built for them in advance, but they didn't show up in the list of dwarves. Odd.

So I checked the unit list, and next to their name, it says "tame" instead of whatever task they are currently doing. More oddness.
I did the zoom to them from the unit list, and found that they don't appear as a dwarf symbol, but as the human symbol. Even odder!

Is there anything I can do? They are likely to get upset since they won't have the rooms and furniture which they are expecting...

Have you created a burrow recently? Or changed alert status to one linked to a burrow?

If you get a caravan arrive in time then you can try trading for a small amount of the cloths that you don't have, assuming the caravan has some.

DF Gameplay Questions / Where are the visitors?
« on: September 26, 2011, 10:10:17 pm »
I accidentally penetrated an Adamantine tube thinking it was a solid vein... I got the expected entertaining "messages", but then nothing.

I was expecting some flying visitors to come and pay me a visit, but nothing has happened. Every time I have done this before I have had many visitors that have inflicted a great deal of fun on me.

What's going on? I had assumed that there were always at least some visitors that would fly up the tube to say hello...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Danger rooms are dangerous!
« on: August 14, 2011, 10:07:41 pm »
I'm creating danger rooms which are barracks, and using 10 wooden TRAINING spears (and yes I have confirmed, more than once, that they are training spears that were used), I assign a squad or two, and some of them die, often within a minute or two.

What do you mean by "ten training spears"? Is that ten total in the whole room, or ten in each trap? If it's the latter, you're increasing the damage the trap causes, which may be the problem. I put one wooden spear in each of my traps, and it seems to work fine. Although it it still possible for a dwarf to get skewered. And beware of pets/children wandering in as well. It's safer to put the danger room behind an always-closed/not-locked door.

Yes, 10 in total in the one Spear Trap. Will just having one be as effective? I guess not killing dwarfs would have to be better. :)
And I already have the room behind a door that is no-pet, but that doesn't stop some slipping through and meeting a nasty fate, along with the babies that are carried in...

I just disassembled the trap and rebuilt it with one spear. All but one of the training spears was of Masterful quality, and one is only Superior, so I put just that one back in the rebuilt trap. Lever pulling has just recommenced... Stay tuned for possible casualty reports. :)

I have an update on this, in the event that there is a small chance someone is interested. :)

Since the addition of cloaks to the uniforms, and the use of the lowest quality level of wooden training spears I have had zero deaths in the danger rooms.
I have been closely watching the combat reports, and a significant number of spear hits are being deflected by their cloaks. Perhaps this is simply because they are the outer covering and so get hit first, but who knows?
