Does weapon quality affect armor penetration?

I wondered about that too - my carpenter is always at a very high level when they make the spears.
Is there a way of seeing their quality either before (at selection) or after they are placed in the spear trap?

I haven't tried using danger rooms myself, but do they have clothing on under their armor?  If not it could be the lack of any kind of padding killing them.   The training spears can't penetrate your armor but the force is still going into the dwarf through his armor.  Though it is likely spread out quite a bit, without something soft under the armor to absorb the blow they may still be taking the hit full force.

Ok, Thanks. I always choose the "replace clothing" option when I set up my armour... I'll try a new armour set with it going over clothing and see what happens...

DF Gameplay Questions / Danger rooms are dangerous!
« on: July 31, 2011, 09:23:02 pm »
This has been talked about before, and I just assumed that I was unlucky, but its still happening...

I'm creating danger rooms which are barracks, and using 10 wooden TRAINING spears (and yes I have confirmed, more than once, that they are training spears that were used), I assign a squad or two, and some of them die, often within a minute or two.

At first I thought it was because the spears were hitting them in non-armoured places. So I wouldn't send a squad in until I confirmed that they were fully equipped. But they still die. I checked the combat report for one, at it hit them through a piece of steel armour!

I even tried making lots of training spears and just choosing the ones that sound like soft wood (like Fungiwood etc...). No change.

What am I doing wrong? Or are my dwarves just too drunk to dodge training spears?

Have you had any dwarvern caravans or liaison come and visit?

I believe it is the liaison that gives you the promotions, including turning your Expedition Leader to Mayor.
Confirmation anyone?

If no visits, then perhaps your dwarvern Civ is dead. But thinking about it, to get to 150 pop you would have to still be getting Immigration waves. Curious.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Kicking hell's ass: is it possible?
« on: July 19, 2011, 03:39:47 am »
I have a related question.

While looking for Magma, I tunneled a long way down, and accidentally cut through a lava tube that lead to hell.
Fortunately I had a draw bridge set up not far from the accident, and quickly activated the lever, losing just a few miners to the demons.

My question - is there a finite number of demons down there? I was thinking of building a series of draw bridge "air lock" rooms on the friendly side of the accident,
and then opening up the area to let some of the demons in, and then close the airlocks again to trap hopefully small enough numbers per room so that my modest sized military can take on one room at a time.

But if their numbers are infinite then there isn't much point.

Or attach and pull a lever to release them. You can do this for the goblins in front of your military. It may be best to remove their equipment first...

Isn't your expedition leader supposed to become a mayor once you have 50+ population?

Still unanswered.

short answer, yes.

I actually thought that it isn't automatic, but takes a visit from the liaison from your dwarvern civ?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can't Find bins in depot menus
« on: June 24, 2011, 07:43:25 am »
I had a similar issue where I had been busy getting lots of gems cut for trading, a caravan arrived, and I had no gems at all in the list to take to the Depot, and a few other things were missing too.

I was very puzzled until I checked my Nobles and found that Bins had been prohibited... I never thought of overriding the export option just to get the bins to the Depot.

Set a stone stockpile where the stone dump is, I does this fairly routinely and they don't 'spread' out the stones that's piled up on the stockpile, unless the stockpile is being taken by another stockpile.

So just to check I understand... If I put a one-square stone stockpile on top on my one-square dump, my haulers can keep taking stone to the pile, but it gets treated as dumped, so they can keep filling the one-square pile over and over?

Or do I need to user a larger area of dump/pile to make this work?

Thanks.
No, that's not how it works.
Instead, your dumpers dump stone to the quantum stockpile, then you unfobid it.
If there isn't a regular stone stockpile under the dump, your haulers think: "hey, there's some unforbidden stone out of the pile, let's haul it to some free space."
If there is, they do not consider that dumped&unforbidden stone to be tasked for hauling, because it's already in the stockpile.

Ahhh... OK. I see. So they wont try and take the dumped/reclaimed stone back to the larger stone stockpile I already have, and instead will happily wander off into the far reaches of my fortress to seek out stone that hasn't been marked for dumping to add to my pile. Which I can then dump without them going back to the dump to refill the pile.

Like most things in DF its clear in hindsight. :)

Thanks for your help.

DF Gameplay Questions / Stone Piles and Quantum Storage
« on: June 15, 2011, 10:18:58 pm »
Hi All,

I'm trying to do something that looks like its not possible, but perhaps I'm just doing it wrong, hence the question here.

I have a quantum stockpile (a one-square garbage dump) that I dump most of my excess stone into, via the d-b-d command and marking the whole area that has been recently dug out. That works fine, and I occasionally reclaim the stuff in the dump to make it accessible to the stone mason.

What I also want is to have a small stone stockpile that idle dwarves will go and retrieve cut stone into when they have nothing better to do, especially from places like stairwells and alike that are messy to mark for mass dump due to the multiple z levels.

What I want to do then is dump all the stone from the pile when it fills up, to repeat the process all over again.

The problem I have is that once I've dumped from the stone pile, rather than getting stone from distant diggings, the haulers just go to the dump zone and bring it back to the pile, which defeats the purpose.
Other than temporarily forbidding everything in the dump zone, is there a way to get this to work?

Thanks.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Should I trust this "liquid"?
« on: June 10, 2011, 08:16:15 pm »
I made the mistake of buying one of these undefined liquids from a caravan. My dwarves wouldn't carry it away from the trade depot. Now I know why... :)

Forbidding all these items is taking ages but i think it's going to be so much better then deleting all my stockpiles every time.

You do know that you can mass forbid stuff with the d-b-f combination, and select the area that you want everything forbidden?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Lost Labours?
« on: June 10, 2011, 07:25:34 pm »
Hi all,

I recently defeated all the goblins and trolls that were sieging me, and bulks claimed all the stuff on their bodies.
As usual all my idle dwarfs ran out of the fortress to collect the stuff, but this time 10 of them were still left idle.
I was curious, so I selected the "u" option and scrolled down the list, and sure enough there were 10 dwarves, apparently at random, with no jobs. When I selected them they had no labours enabled at all.
Sometimes I had turned off the main labour on my Trader, but that's all.

What happened to them? Was it something I did?

I reset them to have the labours they should had based on their skills, plus the usual hauling and healthcare, but its a puzzle as to why I had to.

I've had this in the past with my army dwarves, especially once they hit legendary and/or become Axe Lords/Sword Masters/Etc. After combat, they'll disable all their labors and then slack off somewhere until I turn 'em back on. As far as I can tell, it's just a thing that happens. Possibly a remnant of 40d when "the champion need not work".

Okay, that will be the cause then. I had recently started using a danger room because the standard barracks training and sparring was producing poor results even after years of it.
Just about all of my military are "lord" status now.

It has happened a few times since - I'll just watch for idle dwarfs more now, and try and keep my military active all the time, even if the non-Lords do complain a bit.
