Oh, sorry. I was using the wrong Java command. Here's what I get when I run 'java -jar VanillaLauncher.jar' (The same message appears in the console if I run it from Finder, or if I try to run VL_Mac.sh or VL_Linux.sh)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It looks to me like it might just be a problem with my outdated java version...

P.S. The windows executable doesn't seem to work through Wine either :P

I just tried it on a mac, and it crashed. Running it in Terminal gave this error:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: VanillaLauncher/jar

If it makes a difference, I'm using OS X 10.5, so I'm limited to Java 1.6

But then they wouldn't be able to interact with 3D objects at all!

Actually, they can.  A 2D object is like a sheet of paper and can pierce right through a 3D object.  That's how Flatlanders trap an intruding 3D being in their universe.

That said, even if the balista bolt (or anything else, for that matter) completely severs a limb off a 'dwarf' which is actually a 4D being, it's not actually that injured.  It's like drawing a stick figure on your arm, then taking a knife to him: he's severed in half (you just have a small cut).

But it has no mass in a 3D realm, so it can't impart any force within it.

Hopefully fortresses will be able to contribute to the civ in more ways too in future. I hope this means that digging to the HFS then retiring a fort and waiting a few years will result in civ-wide adamantine weapons :D

And what about ballista arrows?
Are they 4D that strangely occupy 3 tiles?
Or are they powerful 3D objects that push things into the 4D world like water?

Ballista arrows are, for some reason, 3 dimensional. Who knows why the dwarves build them that way...

I think they are 2D as they cannot act upon things up or down from the point of origin in 3D space.

But then they wouldn't be able to interact with 3D objects at all! Also, they eventually fall to the ground, which a 2D object couldn't do.

1. You have combined my favorite mathematical obsession and Dwarf Fortress. MARRY ME

Very well. However, I've decided to forgo any formal celebrations.

Don't try to comprehend the dwarves.

Tharwen has gone stark raving mad!

:P Trying to comprehend the dwarves is a death sentence by your brain turning to mush, and dying slowly of dehydration/starvation.

*Runs around babbling*

It's interesting how the game can be so mechanical and predictable in some respects, but many aspects of dorf behaviour are organic and unpredictable.

The world will be the same, but the history and civilisations will be different. I don't know by how much.

That horse skull is forbidden. Use d>b>c to reclaim all the items in that stockpile. Also, cut some gems.

Once they claim the workshop, they give you a list of ingredients they need.

To find out what workshop they want, look at their labour skills under v>g and build the workshop appropriate for their highest skill. If there isn't a workshop specifically for that skill, just make a craftsdwarf's shop.

I think in a four dimensional world, the difference is that everything is much more connected. The universe, I mean. Which means, those who have mastery of movement in a 4-d world could move much quicker than in a 3-d world, because of these shortcuts. It would appear to be 'teleporting' to us. That's what I think anyway.

And of course, five dimensional, it's just more connected, allowing for more shortcuts.

Indeed. It seems they only use those shortcuts when they're grappling and biting though... Who knows why. Maybe the world of Dwarf Fortress is simply the setting for a series of bloody multidimensional gladiatorial games, in which travel is only allowed in 3 dimensions...

M.C Escher would approve.

Well, it's common knowledge that he was a fan of Dwarf Fortress.

Is not the 4th dimension time?  I'm not sure how that'd work into your plans...

Fine. It's a universe with 4 spatial dimensions and 1 time dimension.
