Ripples? What about:

and they can skip across the surface of liquids
Skipping carts! I can't wait for the first contest to see who can skip a minecart across the surface of an underground lake the most times.

INTO A GOBLIN

WHO THEN FALLS INTO MAGMA

AND MAKES RIPPLES

OMG BEST RELEASE EVER

...how do I manage to get excited for every tiny little thing that Toady posts on his dev log?

Still, ripples. Discuss.

...

Fine. Let's talk instead about the potential scientific application of projectiles being slowed by liquids. I think it could really be useful in some way we haven't thought of yet.

There's more in it.

I'm definitely interested now. Post-party DF might have to become a thing.

I've tried it drunk after going out. I tend to just sit there for a few minutes staring at the symbols flashing around the screen, then fall asleep.

Rails can be put on constructed floors, I think, and there's nothing stopping you putting those outside.

You can't put them on constructed floors, but they can go outside.

Will it be possible to deploy tracks on build/smothed surfaces? Will dwarves use Minecarts as a form of public transport?

You can carve them whereever you can detail, and you can place them whereever you can construct floors.
That seems to imply you can place them as a type of constructed floor.

Perhaps a 'minecart track' is in fact a 'floor with tracks attached'. It's a bit of a shame really, because I was really looking forward to creating this:

Ooh, another idea!

Has anyone suggested easier dwarven computing using minecarts? If not, I just did.

This is like the 5th thread discussing minecarts btw.

And they deserve every single one. But still... most ideas have already been posted in the Holy Crap Minecarts thread.

Hey if the blue stuff is called candy what do we call the grey stuff?

Used chewing gum.

A jumping spider is just a species of spider...
A jumping spider man is not a specie of spider.

But we've had batmen for years! Why has no-one made threads about them?

The side effect of a hauling system is a railgun.

The side effect of a minecart railgun is incredibly efficient corpse hauling.

And creation.

Anything that kills you instantly.

I mean... that's pretty bad.

    • Trees may become massive multi-tile monsters that are big enough to live in - dwarves may end up "mining" into part of the tree as they take out one tile at a time?

Dwarves living in trees ? What is this blasphemy ?

I'd do it, just for the amusement of watching the elves cross the wooden bridge to a wooden staircase carved out of the carcass of a tree, before unloading in the wooden trade depot, then storming off in a huff when I try to sell them a single wooden earring.[/list]

That's the general idea.  A proper air suppression system would invoke a large square of carts flying in formation, the "flying wall" effect.  This also means that when they land, they'll form a "rolling floor" as well.

Imma embark on a 3x16 zone for proper Fun.

But then surely the creature would just dodge lots of times in a single turn until it escapes the flying wall, like when you put a dwarf on a 10-spear weapon trap.
