DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can raised bridges be destroyed?
« on: June 17, 2011, 12:01:22 pm »
Partly because I want my bridges to actually be bridges, and partly because I think it's a bug that may be fixed at some point in the future, I always build a moat under my bridges.
It has the added benefit of making it possible to easily fill it with lava later.

Moar derailment!

Does anyone here believe the 'hail to my sweet Satan' stuff you get when you play it backwards is intentional?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: June 17, 2011, 09:22:25 am »
On this map, I have badgers and carp. Oh what fun.
Now I have two dwarves left, both of whom are insane. Even if migrants come I won't be able to do much with them because the noble and military interfaces are both glitched because I have no dwarves left.
OK, migrants came, but now they're refusing to do anything because there's been an ogre strangling a spinner in the courtyard for 6 months and no-one dares walk past it. I can't even fight it away because of the aforementioned bug that stops me forming a military.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Is there a "select all" available in the Trade Depot that I've been missing?
« on: June 17, 2011, 07:28:51 am »Please say yes.
The sort answer is no. The long answer is "macros"- which is less useful when you want to send out bins.
If you set the macro to select items from the bottom upwards, it'll select the bin after selecting the items inside it and the bin will be sent out. It will take as long as selecting every item individually, but it's still more bearable than doing it yourself. You could also just select the bins manually, then set the macro to work on all the individual items listed below them.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to mitigate post-abandon item "scatter"?
« on: June 17, 2011, 07:24:43 am »scattering is probably the worst game mechanic in this game
you make a neat fort and want to visit it in adventure mode and suddenly crap everywhere
Yep. It should at least scatter it less over a shorter timespan and obey solid wall physics.
The worst part is that if I reclaim a terrifying embark, I can never resist the urge to send the dorfs out to clean up the deadly outdoors when there are no creatures on the map. It never ends well.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do -you- set up a self-sufficient fortress as fast as possible?
« on: June 17, 2011, 07:22:13 am »Point 2 is the classic. Your embarking dwarves probably have just about enough booze to see you to the first caravan, but its close.
In my forts where I forget the farms, they always die before the first caravan, and all at the same time. There must a hardcoded dehydration/hunger timespan, because I usually get the first few 'died of thirst' messages within a few seconds of each other.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: June 17, 2011, 06:55:14 am »My dwarves just finished sacrificing goblin virgins by tossing them into the volcano.
Do goblins even have sex? I would have thought screening them for virgins is unnecessary.

It's the chin, isn't it?
You don't actually have a smooth chin. It's rough and lowers the item value of your entire face.

I'm making a large round tower in an evil region. Unfortunately, my dwarves refuse to channel out the ditch under the drawbridge so ogres, badgers and harpies have free reign through the building site and all but one dwarf is now insane or dead.

On the subject of gender-specific pain, I somehow managed to kick myself between the legs while taking off my trousers earlier.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: for how much time do you usually stay playing on the same fortress
« on: June 16, 2011, 06:08:31 pm »
I usually only last about 7 years, because I'm still awful at making the military kill things effectively.
