Try building the entire fortress inside an aquifer.

Try to survive using only stone-fall traps for defense. It should be quite challenging.

Ambushes make this hard to impossible.
Just chain a dog behind a fortification next to the entrance. That way it will spot them and not be able to help with the attacking.

in the process of designating ALL the mining in my fortress' floor plan before I unpause the game after embark. I've got an awesome plan and I don't want to fuck it up.

Unrelated: Why isn't this thread stickied? It's got more pages of replies than this board has of threads. I think we passed the point of epic thread about 60 pages ago. We're solidly into "Legendary Thread" territory at this point.
I sometimes do that. It usually means I end up neglecting the farms for too long though...

From memory, the cargo bay you get updgrades from in Starcraft II is called 'Bay 12' (I think I got that information off this very forum, in fact). That could at least go under the possible references section.
It's almost certainly a reference to the Alien series, which I believe is what the name "Bay12 Games" is a reference to as well.

I've never seen Alien...

I mean... yes, Alien! I know exactly what you're referring to! In fact, I just finished rewatching the entire series so I'm about as knowledgeable now as I'll ever be!

I'll get round to it at some point.

Somehow, an untrained woodcutter managed to make the ogre run away, and now it's being chased by my entire populace (of 6) around the entire map. It's just a shame I can't see where it is half the time.

EDIT: Wow, another ogre just came and beat a wrestler to death with a pair of trousers...

EDIT 2: Now a different ogre has spent the last three months getting bitten over and over again by about a dozen wardogs. It's seriously lagging up the fortress.

The way to realistically fix it would be to make pumps require slightly more energy than a waterwheel can provide, but to be honest, I think it's a good thing for the gameplay to have things like this in the game. It's not exactly a simple exploit, so it's not making 'standard' energy systems redundant.

Maybe there could be a simple fortress hardcoded into the download files with no world to go with it, and some basic instructions to guide a player around the controls.

Obviously that would be quite a lot of work, but it would at least ease new players in somewhat.
