sure, but there are open ended games that favor shooting, other than favor robbing, other trading, other building, other management.

there are some difference between patrician III, just cause 2 and simutrans :P

I read what you put as "game", not "genre". D'oh!

And it's mainly city / empire building. Something that allows you to see the individuals strolling about, preferably, or something on that level.

I love Distant Worlds because of the whole "domestic spaceships" thing. Not every spaceship launching from your planets is one you own. Often they're civilian vessels transporting goods / people or going to mine planets. Any game that includes that is one I will like.

what's your favorite genre, by the way?

Isn't it obvious? :P

Mercenaries 2, pretty much all 4x games (civilization, the X space sim series, Aurora of course, space empires) city builders (simcity 4 + rush hours, old cesar III and pharao/cleopatra) business tycoons (roller coaster tycoon, raylroad tycoon III, traffic giant, simutrans, openttd)

name your poison! do you prefer open source, erring on the side of complexity, or quality commercial products favoring polished but less features?

The issue with 4x games is that you usually end up losing to someone else's victory, and the games aren't really slow and long lasting enough for them to be able to be played like I'm wanting.

Aurora seemed perfect (if rough around the edges) but I'm having issues with getting it running. There've been some fixes posted, but I don't really have enough time to do them at the minute.

Is it possible to have all three? :p Honestly, I'd like any. The more complex the better, though.

Can I assume you know about both Minecraft and Terraria?

Of course. :p

Mount and Blade?

Played it to hell and back. It and it's two "expansions".

two worlds?
fall out 3 or it's expansion pack new vegas?

Two Worlds is terrible, but I've played it.

Played all the Fallout games, too.

Does anyone know of any games with not really predefined goals? They can, of course, have goals, but ultimately it's what the player desires that is important?

Stuff like Dwarf Fortress, Europa Universalis 3, The Elder Scrolls etc? None of them force you into a specific path and the AI doesn't really act like it has a goal beyond the short-term.

So, any ideas, ladies and gents? I've got a real hankering for this sort of game and it's really lacking.

Oh, and I HATED Mercenaries 2! Seriously, the first game was good, actually quite realistic, I really liked it.
Then number two was just this massive freaking... Well, number two! Seriously, I'm glad you mentioned it-It has to be the suckiest game I can remember playing. Even beating out Just Cause 2. >:( One of the game-things I like more than character customization, at least in shooters, would probably be realism. :P

At least it's trailer had a great song?

So, super fast robot ninja multiplayer game with upgradeable elements.

Current on Steam for £2.

Anyone fancy a game? :p

Just an impulse purchase from me, simply because it seems relatively cool.

I personally expected "heaven" biome much earlier, right after the inclusion of hell-like world. At least the possibilities were there... Also there were "skylands" map scripts etc. I wonder why did nobody make a floating island dimension and instead made ice/whatever dimensions.

Someone was in the process of making one when Notch did this.

It's also hilarious that Notch is faffing about with the map script that people have been doing for ages. The only reason it's not widely used is lag issues.

inb4 Notch doesn't fix those issues and his sky dimension is a bust.

It's unplayable. A lot of options are cut off to the right hand side of the screen, even with the window resizing thing. It's a shame because this game looks awesome. :(

*adds game to list of Games That Look Awesome Yet Are Unplayable which includes Mabinogi and various Linux games*

Go to Game Parameters then Reduced Height Windows.

Does that help with stuff being cut off? Or by edge do you mean the right and left of the screen?

Right and left. Well. Far right, to be exact.

Read the tutorial.  This game's learning curve makes Dwarf Fortress look casual, so the resources on the wiki/forums are pretty much necessary if you wish to have any hope of figuring out what to do.

I can only find the second part of the tutorial and THAT'S after a bit of searching. I'm just a bit lost, really.

I have no idea how I'm meant to start. The game seems to be too big for the window (some of the game start options are cut off at the edge of the screen) and when I do start I can't even tell how I am meant to do anything.

Help? :(

Does anyone fancy trying to cover an entire massive world (including the underground if we can get it to take hold) with corruption?

Including little pockets of corruption surrounded by ebonstone so they're hard to destroy? :p

Obsidian Skull on the enemy team leader to start. Drop all items on death. When the enemy drops that skull, you have to steal it and get it back to your base. Whoever gets the enemy's back first wins. You might have to make it something more distinctive (whoopie cushions, anyone? :p) to prevent cheating, but eh.
