Other Games / Re: Terraria - It's out! And there's a 4 pack

But... but... the large world is already so... GODDAMNED HUUUUGE. I used that map viewer thing, and I got my mind blow away at the sheer insignificance of everything I did on the world. Even with 40 players, if they dont all just stick on the surface of course, there is more than enough space for them to never even find each other in the dark cave networks. I don't really see the need for a massive world...

I wouldn't be so certain of any of that, really. :P

I really, really can't wait for dedicated servers. Imagine 40 people PvPing on a (hopefully massive if they implement it) world. I'd be fine with them removing the dungeon etc if they could implement additional map spawning every time someone leaves the map. Or maybe allow people to spawn maps back to back.

Really, teams should consist of 4 (or more) players each playing a dedicated role. One's a fighter, one's a crafter, one's a harvester and one's a god I don't even know. Utility? Demolitions?

They did this for the PS1 too and for Creatures Village etc.

No surprise, really. They've always been a bloody terrible company. (Gameware, I mean.)

For looking at your generated maps in one large png picture, useful to find out where everything is.

This makes the construction that I thought was massive and cool like pathetically small. :(

Quick question: Does ebonstone count as "corruption" with regards to spreading/creature spawns? Because that might be a problem for my future ebonstone warp tower.

They spawn eaters of worlds, but I don't think they spread corruption.

Other Games / Re: Planescape: Torment "sequel" being considered?
« on: May 17, 2011, 06:48:59 pm »
Anyone who thinks Torment was about their favorite D&D ruleset just doesn't get it.
And anyone that doesn't get that 4e murder roleplaying and character development just doesn't get it.
Congrats on proving my point.

Congrats on failing to understand the necessary meshing of game mechanism and plotline to create believable immersion.

EDIT: My point is that 4e fails to immerse any players that I've seen. There're too many abstractions for it to really work well, as well as the system just being kind of irritating and dumbed down compared to the complexity of the earlier games. I've yet to meet a player that enjoys 4e based off it's own merits.

Extreme logging - use bombs to take down trees. Who needs axes?! Overkill points awarded for using dynamite.

Other Games / Games That Make You Feel Like "The Lowly Adventurer"
« on: May 14, 2011, 01:14:57 pm »
Does anyone know of any games where you play as a lowly adventurer? A level one who has to scrounge to get food and equipment, barely able to survive from dungeon to dungeon?

A heavily modded Oblivion is about the closest I've ever managed to come, although some MMOs do run it closely (old school UO is the major one for this, probably).

Does anyone know of any other games that pull a "live on the edge" philosophy for games? Roguelikes are probably the best genre that I've seen that KINDA manage this (they're more about luck on whether you starve to death, though) but I'd rather not have it be a roguelike.

Any ideas?

So, how does one make a room liveable for an NPC? I've tried to make a tiny cubicle to shove the guide into (three light sources, table and chair) but no go. What's wrong?
