DF General Discussion / This is how Bug Fixes Should be Done
« on: March 10, 2012, 02:43:25 pm »
For the last two years I've been working in the game testing industry.

Toady is fixing old bugs right!

Most developers would look at a bug and try to fix it with as minimal a change as possible (to avoid making more bugs) or they will even compromise the design in order to accommodate the bug.

This happens more then you would imagine.

Toady on the other hand is looks at this as a way to expand and enrich the gameplay, to explore the concept in a more fundamental way and to expand it into what in some ways would be a core mechanic of an entire game.

I felt the need to let you all know how lucky we are to have the mad genius Toady One working the way he does, he does not shy away from making the game more amazing but also more difficult.

He also has the discipline to fix a bug when he feels he can do it right.

These are very rare traits from my experience.

:D !!!

I take it you like the story? In hind sight I cringe at all the grammar, clumsy word usage, less then ideal dialogue and even a few spelling errors missed by the first sweep with the checker.

:)

Precise feedback or critique can be immensely helpful but positive response is also appreciated :)

If you're into expanding your programming knowledge, better go with less familiar stuff so as to push yourself farther.
If it's about work, you should check which is more popular, and likely to get you more interviews.

They say PHP is a general-purpose server-side scripting language, and I count that as a must for every company(assuming they don't have any yet)

I have a web developer/server architecture friend who would swear by ruby as a catch all solution for precisely what your proposing with PHP. Also something that I've found extremely relevant for professional fields that use computer science is SQL. Seriously, getting a good knowledge base on SQL syntax and applying even a smidgen of optimization techniques learned from programming languages can make you appear to be a wizard in corporate environments.

Life & Studies

a Deep Noble Story

The lectures and the studies had dragged on for what felt like ages, then the practical sessions with the servitors. The poor creatures were mercifully already cored of the delicate and fragile thinking kernals.

The delicate minds canned, catalogued and saturated with a cocktail of restive agents to keep them from going mad with the deprivation.

It was not because the high professor cared for them, no it was all to preserve the valuable minds in a state of focus and engagement. But young Nieh, child of Nu-jol-oh Arbiter of Dispute was relieved that the future servitor kernals did not suffer through the trials of unskilled hands such as was possessed by the young noble.

Hands and limbs which the studiously practiced and critical perfection of the high professor had chastised Nieh severely over the course of the practical assembly section.

“You are without force or speed!”

“Precise and swift motions or the meat shall shred!”

“the fibers are ruined!”

“So Help me that flesh is fading, more blood!”

“What is it that you think you are doing?!”

“They are fragile yes, Swiftness! Clean cuts can be fixed readily, slow rough butchery as your practicing spoils the meat with scars! USELESS!”

It had been like that since nieh started apprenticeship, thirty sessions ago. The curriculum was a thing of supposedly honed perfection, polished by adjustments over ages long before even Nu'jol'oh came to the city of Glorious Rising.

The high professor proclaimed to relish every student's difficulties so that they might be overcome, but the methods and the cold cruelty of it all made Nieh's fingers and toes wriggle with the desire to flee every time fresh servitor meat was brought to the practical session hall.

But classes were over now, no more blood, no more cutting, no more twitching muscles or cracking bones, no more endless criticism pouring down causing limbs to shrink back from hostile tirades, slowly breaking the will of each arm and hand it seemed.

Nieh was exhuasted each eye was lazy, wandering idly about to confer the street, the wall of the dormitory, the green glow of the lamps.

The comforting curves of smoothed cobbles, each one a welcoming lump for a lightly shod foot to curl around and grasp.

Nieh would never understand the bizarre heeled boots some others some wore, they were precarious to balance on the domed stones of the streets and as often as not would stumble into crevices and need to be gently wedged out.

Nieh was practical and quiet, not inclined to the flamboyant colors of fellow classmates. Simple gray skirt and top to cover the torso so as not to be overtly 'presenting'. Nieh felt far too young and unestablished for children and did not want to have others think it was inviting an encounter.

No flamboyance, just simple Nieh walking scatter-minded down the street home, looking forward to rinsing the blood and humors from its skin and crevices. Perhaps getting a fresh set of clothing.

That was until the leather and wool shoe of Nieh's left third foot suddenly was icy and soaking. The shock jolting all of em into congress at once and whirling to focus eyes on the scumy brown murk that had filled the floor of Nieh's dormitory room.

Around the corner there was the banging of heavy servitor muscles slapping against metal and wood on wood with the sharp splatter of water and cloth.

“Oh... no... Not today... please...”

Nieh lamented a nocturne to the empty entryway then sighing heavily sloped into the room daintily, futilely trying to reduce getting so much of the sopping cold water into er boots.

Alas open toes had seemed like such a GOOD idea.

“No... No... No... Little Timble Tumbler... Please!”

second hands on each side hold skirt aloft as Nieh's pace increases to hurry around a corner to the washing room, but on turning a corner the truth of the matter was plain to see.

It was a box, with a water basin, a pipe for plumbing in hot water and a drain that could be opened or closed to release and drain the water when done. It had at one time had a line in reach that would  move the wrung out clothes over to where hot dry air could blow up from the dormitory furnace.

But where normally an attentive and if Nieh would say so very handsome servitor torso with hands, eyes and washboard once was bolted and stitched in now slumped a decrepit wreck of a creature.

It was breathing but where once before its alteration it had possessed a throat Nieh could now see the gasping straining attempt to scream pain or perhaps exultation.

Poor Little Timble Tumbler the Washing Servitor Nieh had brought from home that had faithfully served the student for all its life with the work of washing the meager clothes would never wash again.

The hump which had contained the necessary kernal for its task had been forced over the faucet, with great effort.

This must have taken hours as Timble Tumbler slowly forced its body down over it rupturing the bone case that held its kernal through and through.

Its blood and other vital fluids had been leaking into the frothy water, mixing with the still flowing tap as its broken body twisted and flailed in a mockery of the gentle attentive motions that had always been reliable for getting a session's dirty skirts clean and good as new.

Nieh stared at the broken creature transfixed with the horror, disappointment and to the young student's personal shame a boiling over anger.

“You... STUPID Servitor, Why!? You were happy! I made sure your kernal was always buzzing with joy... why... WHY? I JUST WANTED SOME CLEAN CLOTHES !”

The young one grabbed the ruined servitor by the stump and tore it free of the faucet, the bone case tearing, crumpling apart, smashing in the tightening grip of an arm spewing the soft nodules of thought kernal up into Nieh's Face.

Timble Tumbler's body jerked in a last seizure and then falling limp, finally robbed of the haywire input of its ruined mind.

Gasping in all sixteen valves, body flush with the flow of blood and air Nieh Stared wide eyed at the corpse, Timble Tumbler had always made em laugh. And always seemed to appreciate being spoken too and petted, it was why Nieh had asked to bring Timble Tumbler to the dormitory instead of having a new one made.

But now the thing of all those sweet memories was limp and empty a piece of meat just like all the stock Nieh had to work with on the slabs in practical learning sessions.

And whatever shreds of that friendly creature that had survived its self mutilation had now just been crushed by Nieh's own arm.

Green gold eyes stared at the corpse in shock for a while longer... then limply the arm uncurled and still slick with red blood and grey bits of squishy kernal turned the faucet off before turning to stare at the empty and flooded floor of the dormitory room.

“Oh Royal's Wrath! What am I going to tell Jeioo? Wrath and Scum Look at this Mess!”

Nieh's room mate was surely going to burst something when they saw...

“NIEH YOU SCUZY ANIMAL LOVER!!! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO OUR ROOM!?!?!”

One player that I think might be interesting is the following:

The world is quite fine thank you, it is proceeding according to design, but life and growth must be sustained, the world must get past these rough spots and unneeded interference or instability are to be countered when seen, those that say otherwise are being far too short sighted about the greater nature of reality and should be pitied and gently pushed off the posies.

hmmm I dunno just a thought.

Probably would not lend itself well to a consistently encountered character but one that fades in and out or makes cameos around the place.

Project at work I've been dealing with for almost a year is almost done. It is the culmination of a year of my life working on this nearly every day.

And although I don't think any one person will actually dedicate as much time enjoying it as I and my team and our counterparts around the world were working on it I have faith that among all the people who will experience it we will have given at least twice as much time of joy as we put into it.

I feel flush with relief, wonder and hope.

So what you're saying is, a singularity very much COULD be pulled of by the nobles, and they don't have any specific taboo againt it or a good concception of the kind of danger it poses, they just haven't had the motivation... yet...

Pretty much, if you need deus ex machina to explain the lack of such singularities the Royals could intercede and wipe out any Fleshfield and Deep Noble city that attempts to create such intelligences. It would fit with their inexplicable behavior and is completely in character with them being dangerous but vital aspects of Deep Noble Society.

Also they are more then capable of doing so, depending on your setting they might even perform such 'cleansing' via sudden fission bomb detonations in their skin.

However I am leaving the utilization of these various explanations and events up to individual authors.

Hmm, I have a very hard time imagining deep nobles staying in power if brains can be gown on the scale of flesh fields. Even lacking direct means of output there is just no way such an intelligence wouldn't cause a technological singularity pretty much instantly. It'd just figure out how to take over their brains through hypnotic eye motions or the waste heat generated by it's though processes or something.

Hmm, had not thought of them actually making brains in flesh fields as anything but perhaps the occasional stimuli starved problem solving kernel separated by several yards of muscle and tissue from any other.

Just because you have acres neurons does not mean they can think, especially if their not organized in kernals like our brains or the distributed processing centers in Deep Noble bodies.

There is also the energy requirements to consider for that much thinking mass. Humans dedicate roughly ten percent of our entire calorie intake to our brains. Even if we assume that human bodies are as little as 25% efficient for converting food into usable brain energy that still means you need about 20 pounds of digestive system and other life support to keep ONE brain moderately healthy with an intake comparable to one human.

And then there are the difficulties of needing to have the brains exposed to enough information and needing feedback loops to interact with their environments in order to deal with the world as our minds might and thus develop along those lines.

I suppose there is some fun story potential in Deep Nobles working to try and set off a 'singularity' event for the betterment of their own kind  but I suspect that most such potential uprisings from the Flesh Fields will either be put down by the relatively simple act of starving the rebellous meat.

Or the more expedient solution of cutting out brains that get too interconnected :)

I suspect even if such intelligences do form in flesh fields they are far more mad then any noble and unlikely to be much 'danger' unless perhaps they some how secured alternative food sources.

Uhm, are they dancing on a flesh field or something? It's so morbid it's wonderful. I'm not usually one for ponies but... you somehow make them much more interesting. I just can't put my finger on it...

Yes they are, Flesh Fields pretty much fill the niche of managed biome for Deep Nobles it is as close to nature as they feel comfortable most of the time.

Also really for me despite the fact the show uses ponies I think that it gets by more on the merit of the characters and their interactions and the over all positive feel good aspects of the show.

It also has quite a depth of world building and thought going into it if you really look, for example there is an undertone of deep paranoia about nature being able to get along without direct intervention in that world.

Pegasi take direct action over all weather, Winter must be 'wrapped up' on a set schedule the sun and the moon must be dictated to move by the will of a ruler.

The most frightening place for the residents is the 'Ever-free' forest, there is some thinking under the surface going on there if you look for it.

Here is hoping this is something more of a nature of our times that worlds (even saccharine cutesy ones) will have hidden depths to explore if you care to look.

OuO Best crossover! This really needs to be explored more.

love the idea of humans being, if not directly breed, at least somehow caused by noble influence. Makes the timing of several simultaneous intelligent species seem much less improbable.

Hmm, why do flesh fields have eyes? Are those huge eyes actually good and usable for servitors?

Originally? it was so I could convey their pain and suffering to the viewer. Eyes have more emotive power then any other organ I could have used so it really conveys that this is a living thing that is in PAIN.

As far as reasons why Deep Nobles might want to grow them? I suspect it involves food, medicine (for servitors of course) or perhaps the maintenance of the flesh fields themselves.

Especially if they are using them to grow yards of neural fibers for use in other servitors those neurons need to be exercised with variable information, In that case the Deep Nobles are probably showing pictures to Flesh Fields or exposing them to variable lighting so that their minds don't go all mushy from the monotony of constant harvesting.

Also lets not forget despite their expertise on an individual level they are not very systematic on the whole about things, flesh fields are like any servitor and they are created by intuited recipes not necessarily rational theory.

Yes, it is very nice, I rather like it! However...

how can you not like ponies?
Don't we not do the pony thing any more? for some reason? That isn't to say you have to not like them, but we avoid the subject, or something like that.

I get that impression, I suspect its because the threads got out of hand a few times and got deleted but only things I've heard.
It's very hard to convey sarcasm online.

Also nighzmarquls, I love the drawing, very good job.
and Sirus, how can you not like ponies?

Thank you :) I do appreciate praise, it helps validate that I might know what I'm doing.

88
Sorry dude. Your artwork is great, but even turning them into Lovecraftian horrors can't make me like ponies.

That is fine, I don't need everyone to like what I do for validation :)

However if you like the lovecraftian stuff go check out my thread on the creative projects board, I'm not sure when I'll call it done but I'm taking suggestions/requests for more data/pictures.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This has been added to the Deep Noble Fashion Section, their personalities actually convert relatively easily to Deep Nobles. Although Applejack and Fluttershy get a dash warped in the transition.

Fluttershy's desire to take care of the adorable animals extends to one where she will seek to augment their life spans with the use of Deep Noble Augments.

Applejack naturally brings her work ethic and general tenacity to the care and utilization of her family's flesh fields.

Now that I have associated these two entirely incongruous concepts in your brain I shall get to work on something else related to Deep Nobles.
