on grazers avoid yaks, they keep showing up in my game and dying on me, better to butcher them to avoid the can't butcher bug
Can't butcher bug? Are you talking about the fact that you can't butcher animals that starve to death? I didn't know that was a confirmed bug. I'd really like a fix for that.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Keeping Dwarves Inside
« on: July 05, 2011, 09:59:51 pm »
I finally figured it out!

First of all, every single piece of stone inside my fortress was , for some reason, forbidden. That wasn't the problem, though.

Every time I designated the walls, my dwarves assumed they'd use some of the thousands of stones laying out on the entire layer I dug out. That was outside the burrow, so they figured they couldn't do the job.

I had to forbid every stone on the map. (There's over 12,000; it took a long time to load the menu.) After that, I had to unforbid the stones in my fort. Then I could designate the walls.

This is the most trouble I've ever had with these dwarves...

Turning off varied ground tiles would probably help. Instead of multiple random symbols, they'll all use one ("." I think). There's an option in the init files.

Look through this page on the wiki also. That has various color schemes, which may help visibility throughout the game.

As for your specific questions, I don't know. I doubt you can make them not appear, though. It may be possible to remove their raw entries, if they exist.

I think he plans to work on it some time after the caravans and markets are "finished." (Finished meaning, being deemed good and not going to be significantly changed for a while, if at all.) Right now it's too broken to even consider using. It's broken in the gameplay sense, but I don't know specifics. With all that it would involve now, there's definitely no simple fix for it.

If you wanted to try it out, it was sort of working a while ago. Can't remember what versions, though.

I tried removing the dwarves from the burrow, but it didn't help. They just don't do it. The build site and materials are definitely in the burrow. It may be the time delay between a job being created and started by the dwarves - there's not much time before the goblins get into the fortress.

I'll probably end up just letting my fortress be killed and reclaim. Starting over, sort of, will be a pain; but I don't see any way to survive this invasion.

You should try a birdfall; I've used it, and it has some great effects. Put its usable levels about 20-50z above your main gate - or dining hall.

I'm going to highly recommend you make the following changes to your badger raws:

[POPULATION_NUMBER:200:300]

[CLUSTER_NUMBER:50:100]

Trust me, it's really Fun.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What was your best fort?
« on: July 05, 2011, 07:14:19 pm »
Well, I made a sphere. Kind of small, but pretty cool. It worked well, and had plenty of room for dwarves - up to a dozen or so, probably best for 7.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Other than that... probably my current fort. I'm carving a castle out of the ground. As in, removing all ground but the walls; natural stone walls and floor. It's a fortress in a crater, but still impressive. Work has been coming along well, and I was just about ready to collapse the surface and a couple of useless layers... but a siege arrived. I have absolutely no defense, and can't close it up before they start the slaughter. I'll likely just let it die and reclaim it.

Find a valley. Even better, a river valley. That can be pretty interesting.

If you haven't done so recently, you may want to try a terrifying embark. Make sure you bring a military.

If you want something calm... don't play DF! Actually, embarking most places - generic forest or plains - would be a nice welcome-back, if you want one. Pretty boring biome, though.

It's the same burrow. I just made the burrow, assigned the dwarves, then activated the alert. I realize that step 2 could have been skipped; are you saying I should unassign them from the burrow, even though it's the same one?

Uh, problem. I have absolutely no defense, but to close off the fortress, a mere 2 walls need to be constructed. None of my masons will do this. They just stand around with no job. I've tried this several times. What's wrong? The burrow covers the entire fortress, including the site, materials, and workers. Is the alert making it so the dwarves can't work?

You mean I didn't have to assign 84 individual dwarves to the burrow?  >:(

Thank you very much. Now my fortress will probably survive!

I need a bit of help here. "A vile force of darkness has arrived!" and I was definitely not ready. I've already made a burrow over my entire fortress, added all of the dwarves, and I'm about to give orders to seal up the entrance. How do I get everyone inside? Is a burrow the right way? I couldn't find an appropriate order in the "o" menu.

EDIT: Looking at the wiki... is a civilian alert the right way? How do I do that?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Single Material Artifacts and Ice
« on: July 05, 2011, 02:14:46 pm »
Back to the artifact... My dwarves won't move it. I need it moved, along with other things, so I made a stockpile including cut gems. Does an artifact gem not count as a cut one? If not, how can I move it? It can't be dumped.

EDIT: Another single-material artifact to call into question... a larch chair. One of my carpenters made an artifact chair out of only one larch log. Encircled with bands of larch. It's only worth 2400. I tried to use it to make my mayor an amazing all-purpose room, but I hadn't realized how cheap it was...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: moving a named item.

Make a one-square stockpile. Make its settings as specific as possible to only allow that item. If other items get put in, dump them temporarily until the desired item gets put in.

That's the best idea I have.
