I'm aware of that, Tropes Are Tools after all :P I'm not claiming to be unique in a lot of respects. Likewise, I was giving some extreme examples, but in terms of writing I'm thinking some more subtle neurosis and a tendency towards egotism or indirectly suicidal tendencies, or tending to forgot (and as they get older, having trouble or being incapable of caring) that people are, you know, people and not just tools to be used and manipulated. The idea that eventually they won't even notice the line in the sand as they crossed it and won't be about to turn back or apologise, at least not with any sincerity.

My idea of Ghosts is effectively, well sure I'll explain ghosts here although they are an idea I am somewhat fighting with since I'm straying into Energy Can Do Anything! I'll probably leave this explanation as the "rough theory" being dolled out by someone only somewhat educated on the topic:

Ghosts) A person can either with knowledge or dumb luck, often when dying or being killed, create a kind of "construct" which is essentially an energy copy of themselves, their personality and traits. A ghost isn't the original person who died, they're simply gone, but a kind of 'imprint' of them left in the world. This imprint can have varying levels of sentience, being anything from creatures of anger and hate to effectively that person but in a less material form. They would essentially exist as a series of interactions between energies created in a specific way so as to manifest as if they were the original person.

However, as time goes on that energy slowly disperses into the surrounding world, causing the ghost to decay. Actually influencing the surrounding world requires them to expend some energy too, hastening the decay. Their powers and ability to influence the world weakens, and even the sanity of the ghost deteriorates into a much more base, primal personality. Eventually, they'll fade into nothingness.

Ghosts, especially the ghosts of wizards or warlocks created with preparation, can learn to take energy from the world and maintain themselves (Ghosts who can do this are what causes the "sensation of cold" reported on all those TV shows ^^).

Like I said, so far it's a topic I'm a bit vague on how I'll make it fit, it being a copy of the person in the "magical energies" mage-users work with seems the best I can come up with...

Life Advice / Re: DMing first D&D game, need some advice.

I'd rule cheating is fine when it's the GM's mistake in the first place. It's like if a game glitches and randomly removes half my health, I'll cheat to kill off a few enemies to fix the balance. Likewise, if as a GM I placed too many monsters or gave them too big AC, you can cheat to find a way around.

Or look for other ways around. I was playing the DnD Adventure Board Game with my sister and realised in making my own level and trying to create a boss monster, I accidentally gave the boss too much AC and he was soaking up every attack. So instead of fudging dice, I waited until all his mooks in the room had been dispatched of and declared "The Bugbear looks unconfirmed and unsure of himself now that his allies have all been slain", and lowered the AC by a single point (which was what was making a stupidly big difference, stupid board game knock-off). Fixed the problem, no fudging needed on the die end of things ^^

He suggested that emotions are chemicals in the bloodstream or brain. If so, then it follows that a creature without blood or a brain would not be able to experience emotion.

Define emotion. I'm saying the processes that cause what are called emotions are located in our bodies and brains, and in my rather science-based world view we are our bodies and brains (I don't believe in a soul). Now, a "ghost" (if such a thing existed) or other "non-physical beings" (if such things existed) could display things similar to what humans display which we call emotions, and such things could be called emotions. They wouldn't be the same internally as our emotions, but the external display would be the same.

Of course since, as I said, I don't believe in ghosts or souls, it's kinda a moot point as far as I'm concerned.

Depends on what you call emotions. They're a name we give the appearance of specific phenomena, the underlying cause of which I regard in humans to be processes located in the body. In short, I don't have any belief in the supernatural or spiritual ^^

As for the fear thing, to quote Polaschek: "But there probably isn't such a thing as a harmless psychopath. People who live for themselves and for the day will tend to blunder around, causing harm to people - because that's not how society works."

My idea is with the eventual boredom of experiencing the same basic sensations for centuries, and seeing everybody else die with no escape for yourself, would promote such a "live for yourself and the day" personality, which is fine for that person but ultimately would leave them alone even amongst other people. With Vampires I want to explore some other things too, and also make them clearly "not the way" for anyone well informed seeking immortality.

When I get to them (probably tomorrow since it's getting late now and I'm sleepy), I'll explain Werewolves are going to be my way of exploring addictions and power, and Ghosts the concept of the "self".

Chemicals in the bloodstream is not the same as emotion.

Huh, odd I thought that's exactly what emotions are. Well, okay mostly chemicals located in the brain but still...

Oh, I might rob a bank to quickly get money to enjoy the next few hundred years in comfort. I might set myself up as a god and collect a harem of worshippers. But I wouldn't suddenly take up beheading kittens as a hobby.

That was my point, no fear means you have nothing stopping you from acting on the thoughts of "hey I need money...maybe I should rob this bank!" whereas previously you'd dismiss that as a stupid idea because you know and fear the consequences, "Hey, this guy has money, I could rob him. Huh, can't take the chance he saw my face, best if I kill him!". Pragmatic cruelty is still cruelty. Okay, I may be using wanton wrongly there (I guess it's not unprovoked if it's provoked by need of money) but still, you'd be committing acts of cruelty and criminality.

You could argue it's a Fraudulent conversion, which is "exerting unauthorized use or control of someone else's property", the definition of "property" is the determining factor there (is intellectual property included in, or separate to, property?). This is covered by the UK theft act as an act of theft.

I'd say it's not a new concept. Copyright law was originally made for books, after all. The only thing new is the scale.

Theft, by the legal definition, requires one to deprive one of the stolen item so only really applies to physical goods.

You can argue that a sale is similar all you want, the words as written in the Theft Act (1968): "A person is guilty of theft, if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it; and "thief" and "steal" shall be construed accordingly."

Actually you're largely going with my thought process with that. By insane I'm thinking Anti-Social Personality Disorder more than Schizophrenia. How much of what we do IS driven by fear? Not the bad, but the good. If you no longer feared it, had nothing to stimulate that adrenaline rush, you wouldn't enjoy bungee jumping. If you didn't want to avoid punishment and social reprisal, you'd most likely commit wanton acts of criminality and cruelty because hey, you'll get away with it. THAT is what I'm thinking of when I think of the insanity of the immortals, boredom and a lack of fear do not mix well..

An idea I was working with for the super strength isn't really 'super', they'd be just a bit more muscular by nature. I didn't really explain it well here (would have to go in more detail in an actual story I guess, if I was gonna explain it), but the reason they snap their tendons would be their brain stops telling them to cut off, it's like a mother pushing aside a car if her child is in danger and risking breaking her arm in doing so. Normally her body would stop it with pain, but the adrenaline rush (or in this case, simply the alterations made by vampirism) stops that response, so the vampires have to learn the control to recognise their own limits because their body has stopped telling them.

That's my idea: They are a bit stronger than people, not too much, but their body isn't telling them quite how much so at first they tend to overshoot the mark. They're in a world of cardboard, their own bodies included.

You do realize that Let's Plays are illegal copyright infringement, right?

It's essentially a massive grey area, which is why youtube has "Videos simply showing a user playing a video game or the use of software for extended periods of time will not be accepted for monetization." and not "be removed from the site".

Nobody has ever outright pursued legal action over it to the bitter end, so no precedent has ever been set so it's literally a "nobody knows" and down to interpretations of certain phrases -_-

So for the last time, piracy is a civil offence. It is not legally theft, which is "A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it", as whilst yes you are depriving them of the sale but NOT the item itself.

I'm thinking of the "theoretically forever, but most find violent ends long before then and the rest are detached and psychopathic" rout. I just went for the 10:1 for maths, not really sure of the exact number (probably more like 2 or 1.903248whatever xD) but I wanted something other than "lived too long" or "vampires are automatically evil because...souls n stuff" to explain why a vampire might go a little crazy/psychopathic. Boredom from being able to think 3 thoughts in the time it takes the person next to you to think one seemed like a good one :P

That's my main point about piracy: The only way to stop it is to provide a better service than the pirates.

And what's to stop them from taking that better service/product and pirating that too?

You misunderstand me completely. I don't mean make a better product, I mean make the service they use to obtain that product better than the one pirates can offer. For example make it more convenient to buy a game than to find a working torrent for it, read all the comments for the torrent so nobodies found a trojan horse or virus in it, download the torrent, virus scan the torrent, find a working crack, virus scan the crack, hope you haven't somehow missed anything and that your computer won't explode when you try and run the game...

And the latter is still more convenient than having to go to the shop and actually buy a hard copy of the game.

I think it's legally a breach of contract. Likewise, copyright law is essentially saying if you don't buy the license, you're effectively breaking the contract that you signed by being in the country of the government that imposed that contract. Same concept, except everybody is assumed to have signed the contract. You don't own the intellectual property held in the book, CD, DVD, VHS, MP3 whatever that you purchased, you own a license to use that intellectual property.

Yes Piracy takes money the person could of earned. Yes, this is a bad thing for that person. Not every bad thing is theft though. The point most people are trying to make is it is not theft, not that it is moral.

Personally I think piracy will happen, has since it became possible to copy one thing in it's totality. Pirated books weren't uncommon, and think of all those people who pirated Vinyl and VHS tapes by buying cheaper copies from the street vendors, and think of all the modded PS1s out there running pirated games bought from street vendors! But, the real question and insight comes from what stopped a lot of people from going to them: Often those copied books, CDs, VHS, Games, DVDs etc were of lower quality, and you usually had less guarantees if it broke and a higher chance of it breaking. Couldn't take the CD or Game back to the street vendor if you took it home and it didn't play, no reciepts.

That's my main point about piracy: The only way to stop it is to provide a better service than the pirates.

So words have no agreed-upon meaning and can be used for anything tangentially related to the connections formed by each individuals brain as opposed to their social meanings given by the masses that speak that language? Well baby towel pig stain table! =P

Piracy is prevalent because it's easier and cheaper than not pirating. I reckon a lot of pirates and former pirates will use Steam instead of torrents, because Steam is easier than pirating. Likewise, Spotify back it's when free-with-ads a decent service, was very popular amongst "music pirates".

The problem is steam invalidates a lot of where publishers get money from, and ads (Spotify) doesn't give them £7 per person per album like some music downloads. The industry needs to evolve. Digital goods should not be charging equal amounts as the physical alternative, otherwise the digital good just seems overpriced. Internet connections need to improve so streaming and digital distribution services become viable ways for the majority of people to have access to easy-to-obtain and reasonably priced goods.

If you want to stop the pirates, since you can't beat them when it comes to cost you have to provide a better service than piratebay. They'll still be some piracy, but less. People will always want something for nothing.

It's not even a criminal offence. It's a civil offence, at least in every country that has any trace of sanity left in it's legal system. So legally or by dictionary definition, is it theft? No.

Of course you may feel that it is similar to or on par with theft in moral terms, but moral discussions are by nature imprecise, ill-defined and in my opinion, as a result utterly pointless.

Since by the dictionary definition of theft, it's not theft, and by legal definitions of theft, it's not theft, then it's not theft.
