DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Epic Defenses
« on: December 11, 2007, 12:00:00 am »
I walled the entire outer border of my fortress, with one main gate for traders (and heavily trapped). There are several layered baileys along the other walls, made of fortifications with the entire floor lined with weapon and stonefall traps. At the end of each is a cage trap. Anything that gets through that gets to meet my army of 50 Elite Marksdwarves.

Yes, they are all bedrooms, but even the 3-space ones are 200 coins plus.

Also, I have about 15-20% of my Fort as military already (of 150 Dwarves). I don't know how much I should REALLY have and yet keep efficient work being done.

DF Gameplay Questions / Landlord Madness!?
« on: July 13, 2007, 08:50:00 pm »
So, I managed to gey me economy started pretty quickly. I have a large number of bedrooms, more than enough for the dwarves, however most of them use the Barracks to sleep in. Most of my bedrooms (even the three-square ones recommended in the Wiki) are going for 200+ to rent. How can I fix this so my dwarves can afford proper rooms to stay in? I think it's that they can't afford the rent, but there also might be an issue where they just plain aren't claiming a room even if they can afford it.

So Moody dwarves always want stuff in their 'likes' list? I didn't know that!

I'm on a no-forest map and am managing to get by... Though that's mainly because I have a magma vent. Maybe you should dig around and see if you have one?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: help needed with deciphering strange mood

A dwarf in a mod collects the items in a specific order. If he is missing an item on his list, he won't collect any other items even if he needs them. More than once I've had a moody Dwarf stop until I made him a block, and then he'd run off and collect 6 other things.

It also appears that hauling nonperishable items from the TD seems to be a low-priority job. I used to think that I was having this problem, but it turned out that my Dwarves just seemed to have a ton of things to do first. :| They got it cleaned off just in time for the next Human caravan...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pit Trap
« on: November 16, 2007, 01:17:00 am »
What I did was make a massive channel (5x10) and put a bridge over it set to retract. I then linked the bridge to a pressure plate at the INSIDE edge. They will then step on the plate, and everything behind them will fall into the pit.

The pit has spikes. Muahahahahahaha.

DF Bug Reports / Permasieged?!
« on: August 14, 2007, 11:21:00 pm »
I was sieged by the Humans again (Stupid human diplomats apparently can't path their way out of a paper bag. I mean, I HAD a perfectly good nine-square area open on the lava moat!  :) ). This isn't normally a big deal. They show up, burn, and the siege flag pops off.

However, this time, it didn't go away. I've spent about half a year under siege with no invaders left (A couple DID spawn in the safe zone, which I killed with my Champion Speardwarves).

Any idea how to get it to recognize that I'm not actually under siege anymore so I can get my Dwarven Caravan again?

DF Bug Reports / Re: Bug with embedded arrows

That must have looked bad ass, though. You see this Dwarf walking along, and a kobold jumps out... And then BAM, a flurry of movement and the Dwarf-fu strikes, impaling the kobold on a wall of stabbed arrows.

Last time I checked, you couldn't bin furniture...

DF Bug Reports / Change Your Clothes, Ya Bum
« on: November 21, 2007, 07:19:00 pm »
I have a mature fortress, working out quite nicely. In fact, I am doing so well that I only have a couple problems. One is the issue that the Dwarven Economy always brings (and I can't retroactively turn it off, it appears), and the other, which is the subject of this post.

The main source of unhappiness for my dwarves are the clothes rotting off of their back!

This is despite my having plenty of crafted clothing to wear. They only get new clothes when the stuff they have rots, despite me even trying to force a dump of the objects through the Stock menu. Is it a side effect of the economy (Not enough money to buy clothes?!), or what?

DF Bug Reports / Re: Goblin sieges still bugged
« on: November 20, 2007, 03:17:00 am »
The solution, of course, is to use siege weapons. I've broken the last three sieges I've been under with catapults. It's fun to knock goblins off the plateau, as well.  :D

And what if I REALLY want to kill that Elven caravan for whatever reason and have no handy flood? It's useful for more than just animals!
