Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Day 1 Tip: Hands have five fingers :P

Both of those hands do have five fingers. I'm confuzeled.

It's ok. Bug and feature are synonymous in DF vocabulary anyways.
Dwarven Meth
"OH GOD THERE ARE FEATURES UNDER MY SKIN"

Anyone else? Come on, I know there are like five of you guys in my city alone. ETS fare is only like $5, you can all make it.

DF Suggestions / Re: Coincidence Significance Arch / Naming Math

I'm sorry, but the names are the dorfiest parts of DF. Take away that, and what do you have? An elf.
"Hello my name is Likod Punchface"
"I only have a first name, sorry"
"What is it?"
"Cacilitheiliomename"

DF Suggestions / Re: Hot springs

I was always under the impression that the gods created everything exactly how it was at year 0. Year 0 is the beginning of the universe, and somehow creatures start as they are and rocks exist and such.
And "long dead gods' death sites" can be found that were ancient even while the world is 'new'?

Some smartalec Young Dwarfworld Creationist will probably claim from inconstancies in the distribution of pitchblende deposits[1] that history is not as long as some of the Deep Time believers think it is, of course...

[1] For my current Adventurer, one of the places he's visited is an entire abandoned castle made of the stuff.  I don't know if that's why it's abandoned except for some kangaroos.  Mind you, as the some of the kangaroos were to be found at the top of one of its towers... well... that poses an interesting solution to the question "Where have all the original occupants gone, and why are there now loads and loads of kangaroos in their place?". ;)
The radon mutated them into kangaroos because that's how radiation works

DF Suggestions / Re: Magic/Enchanted Wood
« on: January 16, 2013, 09:45:42 pm »
But it does deserve more. No suggestion should be forbidden from being expanded in a perfectly logical way.
Original: "Let's make elves give out a kind of wood that they can identify, so we can trade it back to them."
You: "MAGIC WOOD OMG MAGIC LET'S GET INTO WHAT MAGIC IS AND WHY IT IS ALSO TECHNOLOGY"
That's a fair amount of strawmanning. The technology thing was an analogy. And I wasn't the one who brought up how the magic works.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is the wrong thread for technology and magic. This is the thread for the Elven Stamp of Approval. Stop bringing up your own aweshum ideal magic system. Stop.

An analogy for what?? "This has the stamp of approval on it. It would not be possible without advanced CNC devices which machine the stamps we use on it. Technology is related! Help I can't feel my arm again"
I'm sorry, silly me thinking that a thread entitled "Magic/Enchanted Wood" might cover wood that was enchanted to be better as a weapon or something.
That is pretty damn silly. Silly me, reading the title and completely ignoring the content of the first post to further my bizarre, twisted views of what magic should be in the wrong thread once again. Hey, look, this other thread is called 'Vector based font'! That means font will have magnitude and direction? Font shouldn't be able to rotate! Why read the first post to find out what the suggester meant when the meaning is perfectly clear from the three-word title alone? It can be whatever I want it to be!

The magic discussion stemmed from someone posting a webcomic link. Then one mysterious person said "Some of the Threetoe's stories mentioned that elves armed themselves with weapons made of "hardened" wood. I believe it's the same as "enchantment" discussed here, except elves don't think it to be magical. Well, they most likely don't think their tree-shaping to be magic either.". Then you quoted a law (oh boy, laws!) and that started this trainwreck. Trainwreck as in "derail". Stop.

It's not like Minecraft at all in that its creation system involves making the exact motions and devices. You need to hit things against other things to sharpen them and you are involved in all steps, but there are no limits on crafting and you can make a crappy shelter by stacking logs on each other, or you can hand-cut iron nails and a saw and make a slightly better house (which you do yourself).

So.  You want a universe-in-a-box simulator.

Which I believe has come up in this thread like eight times.
Oh, sorry for bringing it up then. I should have gone through all 109 pages of this thread just so I wouldn't come up with anything unoriginal and waste peoples' valuable reading time.

Sounds good. How about August 8, the original release date of DF?
That's a pretty good date (and has a meaning to it, always a plus). And it's summer, so our Bay12ers who are in some kind of educational program (I'd love it if you assumed I was in university when I said that, but unfortunately I'm not quite there yet :I) will be able to organize meetups and things like that without needing to take a sick day "I accidentally stabbed myself with the sharp end of the pin on the button, can I have the day off while I quietly bleed" or something.

And, only if your ‼socks‼ are actually on fire and will be all day :P

But there are no tiers. It's like that one Doodle God flash game but it's just you and you're actually doing these things.

It could be in ASCII, but I'd like it (because it is ideal) to have no "item types" or even item names. Objects can have edges, and if they're angular enough they are recognized as "sharp" and suitable for cutting, but every object is mutable. So, banging a sword against a boulder would dent it a bit for every impact. A zinc nail and a copper penny stuck in a lemon would generate voltage because the lemon is acidic and the metals have different conductivities, not because it is OBJECT_TYPE_LEMON or whatever. Graphics would be a very big part for seeing what you've done, because this is a game where individual molecules are simulated (because it is ideal).

In multiplayer, you could team up to make megaprojects and factories and towns, but your player does not need anything to survive and cannot die (unless you choose to, to prevent being trapped in a pit forever or something). So it's a game that wants to be like real life if we didn't need warmth, food or drink, so you can devote all your time to creating things.

So it's a world simulator (because it is ideal) that is detailed to the maximum possible level (because it is ideal) where you spend your entire time building and working and crafting, trying to make functional devices or giant machines or spectacular monuments. You could make a mold for different kinds of gears and axles, cast them in brass and build a working clockwork arcade device (because it is ideal). It would be the ultimate game for fooling around and trying things, where everything possible is possible (because it is ideal). That's the game I want, and will never get (because look at it, it's impossible).

Oh crap, forgot to mention one criteria , it has to be related to games or games development. Sorry about forgetting that!
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Okay, well, maybe something about voxels. I like voxels.

This ended up sounding really autistic, but I'd like a game where you start with a bunch of trees and every kind of mineral. You can identify every mineral. You can craft anything with these. There is no goal.
so like a good minecraft?
Yeah.

Like, you'd wander the rock-and-tree-strewn plains, looking for a lump of native copper. After tying it to a stick using some tree roots, you heat it over a fire and pound it into a knife blade with a rock.

You are able to move into any concievable tech tree and you can end up building things like nuclear weapons if you spend a long time playing through complicated multi-step processes where all the materials are at hand and can be made by you, from rocks and wood.

That's my ideal game.

What adamantine would act like in real life (with its complete shear resistance), and there's already a thread about it too! (Apparently it would create ultrasonic vibrations, so playing an adamantine guitar would cut your fingers off.)

I was also reading some pretty cool stuff about using bacteria to refine sulphur from pyrite this morning, but that doesn't really matter (or does it? it's your dissertation :U).
