DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I badly draw your reports!

And now you know.

Can I have some of your imagination for Christmas?

photoreference is for people who still have their imagination inside their head proper
Did you ever draw this epic report ?!?

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=56935.0

I just had a were-camel show up in the middle of a goblin siege. The were-camel appeared near to a group of trolls, and promptly attacked them. Thinking 'this will be fun' I kept checking the combat logs. Imagine my shock and delight when I see that the first troll attacked by striking with his glove!

I couldn't help but picture that as the troll glove-slapping the were-camel then challenging it to a duel, then I thought of this thread.

One of my fishermen punched a hornet FB that had stung several people (which nearly instantly rotted them with poison) and killed it, then proceeded to go back to fishing like nothing happened.

I just now realized nobody mentioned the ballista-men whenever they see their target run away in order to see the badly drawn picture.

A dozen or so beak wolves were all one shot killed by a swordswoman who hit them in the head with flat-slaps of her blade. I can only assume she did so in pimp-slapping/ backhanding (whichever term you prefer) motions. It also made me imagine her wearing a pimp hat as she did so.

EDIT: Oops, beak wolves. I forgot...
oh, stop this bullshit talking ! we're all there for the bad drowings !
WHERE ARE THE BAD DRAWS ?!?  :'(  :(
WE WANT THE bad drowed nonsense-gore !!!

by the way

All they needed was my credit card number so they can transfer 100,000,000,000 yuan to my bank account :) I've already bought a Ferrari on credit! I sure hope it ships soon.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Tantrum spiral prevention - figured it out

Dwarves are always the cause of tantrum spirals. Having only one dwarf schould solve this problem  :P
(Maybe an interesting idea for a challenge: One-Dwarf-Challange. Everything have to be done with only one dwarf, all others must be killed as soon as possible.)

Another way to look at it is that with only one dwarf, every tantrum is a tantrum spiral, but they always stop after one tantrum-related death.
I guess
!
is better than

Life Advice / Re: So I Killed a $20 Bill
« on: December 01, 2012, 11:28:55 am »
Here in Canada, bills have two serial numbers on them, and there are a few scenarios regarding money replacement I know of:
1. Both serial numbers readable: The bank replaces it for you. Thanks, bank!
2. Only one serial number readable (e.g. ripped in half): The bank gives you half of that bill's value (otherwise you could get rich by living near multiple different banks and owning a pair of scissors).
3. No serial numbers readable: No cash for you.

One of my friends used to own half of a $10 bill that he would leave under something so that it looked like a full bill. The humour was from people's reactions when they found out it wasn't real, until someone just walked off with it and showed up the next day with $5 in hand.

Mine's not on the poll...
1. Heat milk.
2. Add powder.
3. Stir well.
4. Pour into cup.
Alternatively
1. Take some chocolate.
2. Heat.
3. Drink while still liquid.
4. Third-degree burns.
Here's how to do it incorrectly
1. Pour chocolate powder into heated milk.
2. Stir.
3. Use advanced filtration system to filter powder and lipids out of milk.
4. Dispose of the water that used to be the milk. Pour lipids and powder into mug. Drink.
And another way
1. Pour chocolate powder into milk.
2. Make sure the mug is not made of anything magnetic.
3. Place in nuclear fusion reactor.
4. Enjoy the dispersed flavour atoms.

Say, how do you define a powder specifically? Can you make a powder made of a certain metal, or do you just have to make a dummy powder using tokens from flour or something?

Powder is just ground up stuff. Heck, it's totally possible to make a reaction to grind random ores into smitham.

That sounds fun actually. The word smitham and the grinding into dust.
I just noticed gold has a powder name in the raws, and I've been reworking a lot of old Creeper Cavern stuff (most of it was a mess) so I needed powder for redstone (redstone ore drops nodules of redstone mixed in with the rock, you use a new grinder workshop that doesn't require power like the screw press to mill it into powder, and the powder can be forged into mechanisms and almost all machine parts at another new workshop, and it's magma-safe). Glowstone would also probably need dust, but I don't think you can make a rock drop dust directly so that would probably also follow the path of grinding the ore into dust, melting the dust into ingots and forging the ingots again.
I have just started with editing the raws of metals, now weapons and armour are capable of being made from Aluminium, Lead, Brass, etc. Thank you to all the dwarfs that helped, very much welcomed. :D

I would like to add Asbestos, it is to have similar properties to Adamantine, but that can only be used as cloth armour.
Makes sense.
Also Depleted Uranium, it is to be approximately twice the weight of gold. It should make good spears, and maces. Perhaps modeled off the Slade raw.
Why does it make good spears, and how is it depleted in the first place? I'm wondering because usually, Depleted Uranium refers to uranium that has less of the isotope 235U in it than natural uranium, e.g. someone has centrifuged it out. To get depleted uranium specifically, you'd also need some way to enrich it which takes a lot of tech. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's pretty complicated to mod in all the stuff you need if you really want enriched uranium and not natural uranium.

Lighter-than-air metal, I do not know what value to set this at? It is based on Urlium from Thongor of Lemuria.
Don't think you can make a material that actually floats (density doesn't affect falling speed, I'm pretty sure). You could try assigning a negative value but I've never tried that.

Rubber, this is a wood that has reduced impact damage. I would not know where to begin.
Make a rubber tree, and then a rubber-refining workshop that converts rubber logs into rubber, then uses sulfur and fuel (maybe, I haven't done my homework on ruber) to galvanize the rubber and make it useful? But wood types, I think, don't have many properties you can add to them, so you may have to make rubber and galvanized rubber metal-type bars.

With Asbestos, I was thinking of copying Adamantine, and making it a cloth. Will this work?
Is there a strands token? You could add [WAFERS] to asbestos or something. I haven't looked at raw adamantine very much. But adamantine is already woven into cloth so perhaps you could just remove the method of turning strands into wafers, not sure how.

Depleted Uranium, copying Gold and changing mass by twice the amount?
But it will suck as a material due to gold's low yield values, and uranium has almost the same density as gold. If you want a dense metal, you could try osmium, iridium, or tungsten.

Urlium, what negative number can I give this? Is there a thread for this raw existing?
See before, don't think you can.

Rubber, is there a way to make materials less damaging?
Lower the MAX_EDGE and the density if you want less harmful weapons, and maybe also the yield values. You may have to make it less dense than in real life (the horror!) if you want to match the effectiveness of adamantine war-hammers.

Thank you for your time, I have quite a few questions, but thought I might start with these.

Thanks,
:D Snake_Eyes

Make a corridor fort. The largest rooms are the Siege Workshop and Trade Depot. Stockpiles are linear. No room to interact = no tantrum spirals! Ha!

Yeah. Especially if someone makes an artifact aqua (clear glass?) tilde-N statue.

"Oh god zombies! Wait, just a statue."
"Zombies! No, zombie statue."
"This time it really is zombies! No, a tantruming dwarf just moved the statue."
"Zombie? Please, it's just a zombie staaaAAAAAHHHHHHHHHBLARGBLAAHRGACKBLG"

Slade colossi perform much better than adamantine colossi in my experience.

My great-grandma has made sweetbreads (unknown style - there's probably lots of different things called sweetbreads) before. No, it's not pancreas meat - you scrape pork from the legs of a pig and toss it in a big boiling pot. Then you add the pig foot so the entire thing congeals into a gelatinous mass of meat scrapings (the foot is removed when set). It's very mysterious overall.

DF Suggestions / Re: Hot springs

That's a story for another time, but I'd definitely like to see diverse sites. Here's a couple that are likely to have been suggested already.

Mine - If a civilization has demand for stone baubles or a type of metal ([LIKES_STONE], eh?), they will dig a big pit and surround it with work buildings. They will only dig for shallow metals, though: deep metals cannot be prospected easily from the surface (?).
Outpost - A civilization under diplomatic pressure (war, totally surrounded by other civs) will have a greater drive to assert its dominance over unclaimed lands and send little parties to found little colonies. All civs can send expeditions at any time, but worldgen factors will make them more likely to (see: colonization of the Americas because sailing knowledge had rebounded by that time and Spain was powerful and able to send boats). Colonies are likely to be abandoned or fail, and are of a small nature, preferring domestic animals for food rather than large farm plots. They will also contain more survival equipment like picks and weapons.
