DF Modding / Anyone tried to make a DF bot?
« on: April 08, 2008, 05:29:00 am »
It just hit me... it would be fun. I am a programmer, but i have never ventured to the land of memory hacking, it would be really fun to make a bot that plays DF or Tries to. The code base for it would be enormous, giving it some values or a xml with data for what areas to try to build and what objects it should try to create. It would be awsome and hard as hell i guess.

DF Modding / Tools?
« on: February 16, 2008, 04:08:00 am »
Is there currently any moding tools out there?

No not the ordinary cheats but any small program that for instance parses the file, giving you a overview of the creature and enables you to save them out again after doing changes?

One might argue there is no need since everything is plain text and just requires notepad but wouldn't it be easier if doing a large mod to be able to load a file, get a list of all creatures, get bool boxes (marked/not marked) for all attributes that exist text boxes where you can add specific data and and all possible changes you can do in a easy overview able way?

There are people with great skills on these forums, wouldn't take to long to put something like that together, hell, i would do it myself if i wasn't temporary banished to linux. Is there anything like this and/or is it something cry out for.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Poke ém man got to catch them all.
« on: February 28, 2008, 12:42:00 pm »
Is there a way to know the name, or gender or race of the eyes if you poke them out, you could make a eye gathering game out of it that way, collect all the eyes of all the monsters in the world.

Not even sure if you can keep eyes you poke out, but it would be cool. :P

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Vulcano "negative" spire challange.
« on: May 15, 2008, 11:54:00 am »
To my knowledge lava can be pumped out and refills over time, this challange is to make a "negative tower" going down the middle of the vulcano, possibly while expanding the size of the crater in the progress to fit a fortress.

This would require lots of pumps to my knowledge and work.

Should this be possible. Sounds like fun. Who is in? ^^
Has it been done?

For this to be valid i guess all contestents should be able to show a working pumping solution to re-empty the crater.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Getting the old feeling back.
« on: May 13, 2008, 04:14:00 am »
I have played DF a lot, not as much as most of you guys, but i got into it when it was still the 2d version. I love it it's great but ever since the 2d version i have lacked something, first i belived it was the cliff face, but getting the clif face i realised it was not enough. So i changed the layout of the map so it was original height but max width... and BAM!
Suddenly i could dig with the sense of depth again. I know the into the mountin was sort of suposed to mean down the mountin in the last version, but i prefer to dig in by some reason, this changed my experience of the game once again.  :)

If you want something new, give it a try.
I would really like to be able to play a fullsize map in the future.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The old cliffface challange.
« on: May 09, 2008, 05:44:00 am »
have anyone found a map that looks like the old DF map.

What i am looking for is a river going from the top of the screen to the bottom and a allmost flat wall of rock to the right of the river. (don't mind if there is a vulcano on the map would otherwise be good) I just like the feeling of digging in that way i kind of miss it in the new version. So what i am looking for in essense is a cliff or mountin with a almost flat side faceing you on the right where the mountin is the majority of the area. nr of levels doesn't matter neither does it mather if the levels are not as flat as the ground area. It should be rock and not mud. preferably no aquafier.

To use this aproach to kill all creatures that might dwell in the vulcano is a bad idea, it worked well up to the point that the some pieces of the floor got stuck on diffrent levels of the vulcano, the amount of space that the floor pieces filled started pouring over at the top burning my remaing dwarfminers.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Bad replaning. (poor dwarf)
« on: March 13, 2008, 04:42:00 pm »
I started a new fort design, it's based around digging out a few floors under ground and start build a town under ground. New levels are added after a while by digging down the street level and bridges are used to connect the houses on higher  levels. When navigating my underground tower city i noticed a room in one of the houses filled with misma... looking closer i realized there was no door or stairs leading out from the room. After removing the wall letting the misma pour out, I find the remains of a dwarf, apparently a mason whos last mission in this world was to build the wall that sealed him into the room. This was connected to the re-planing of the floor to allow bridge access between the houses without dwarf having to run trough folks bedrooms... it looks like I forgot to add the new door...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Army Starving to death.
« on: April 12, 2008, 07:15:00 pm »
My army keeps starving or thirsting to death, I in my ignorance was sure that a squad would get water and food when needed too. But no. Am I just very unlucky or is it suposed to be that way?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / First Goblin Siege
« on: August 25, 2007, 11:00:00 am »
I finaly made it so far in my fort that i got a goblin siege.
Lost 9 good dwarves in the process, and 5 more injured.

Still it was a awsome battle and blood everywhere. The fight occured in my main 5 tile wide corridors with all my dwarves battle ready and waiting inside the doors for the goblins to enter.

My next task is to improve the defence of the Fortress placeing more year around X-Bow dwarves behind fortifications looking out.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Horror story.
« on: March 25, 2008, 10:07:00 am »
efter a large dig 4 of my miners got rock in their head and died. This resulted in the mayor having a tantrum, destroying the bridge to the food chamber. Dwarves quickly started to starve, and with hunger came more anger and violence. During this hard time I got two ambushes from large goblin parties. Assembling the few dwarves I had, I drove them off, sadly the majority of my army got criticaly hurt, with no food, all working men hurt, there where only two dwarves left fit to work, one miner and a female fish cleaner, the miner snaped, took his pick axe and killed all the hurt dwarves. During this time the fish cleaner gave birth to a boy. The Miner, done with his task started to hunt the Fish Cleaner, over bridges, trough stairs, this ended on top of the highest ledge in the town. Where no where left to run, the miner killed the fish cleaner and her baby. Leaving him alone in his new home of death and decay.

DF Gameplay Questions / Falling stone walls natural and built.
« on: March 14, 2008, 12:39:00 pm »
I have once stoped a flood by hacking loose a piece of stone from a cliff above and let if fall into the channel. Can the same thing be done with built wall? I think i remember somewhere that they turn back to their core material if they fall?
