DF Suggestions / Re: Dedicated to symbols
« on: October 22, 2007, 04:41:00 pm »
That problem could be solved by more specific symbol picking. Let's say the ability to have different symbols based on gender, for example. Would be good for animals too, to be able to see at a glance what they are.

One thing that annoys me is that dwarves currently have the symbol for whatever category (miner, craftsdwarf, etc.) that they're best at, not the one they're currently employed as, which is something I think has to be changed.

It's annoying to no end to have your miners running around looking like fishermen or whatnot.

Isn't that what wagons do already?

Castle of the Winds and Exile. Man, I loved those. Exile and the other games from that company are really great.

I've been wanting that a long time. There are plenty of nice character sets on the Wiki which provide very pretty symbols that clearly indicate what they're of, but so long as some characters are used for several different objects (and some objects have different symbols (e.g. doors)) the game can't go beyond the ASCII symbols that put off a lot of players. I'm not sure if this is a big thing, but it's really necessary for playability and customisability.

Yea, buying out an entire caravan with a ton of rock mugs makes little sense. I mean, sure, rock mugs are a cute novelty item, and being dwarf crafted makes the novelty even greater, but a ton of them? And they keep wanting them...

The above poster hit it spot on.

I'm hoping to see an economy where you have to import in order to advance much. With the new version we're not guaranteed to have a lava flow, which I hope means we're not guaranteed to have obsidian. In the future I hope to see a world where you're not guaranteed iron, or copper, or tin, or whatever, and will have to make do with what you have or import. Heck, I'm hoping to see a world where there will actually be a difference between the rock types beyond the names, which are just an annoyance now.

Once we're there, trading is going to mean a lot more. Especially when granite thrones becomes all the rage and all your nobles want them, but your fortress doesn't have any granite veins...

How's that for a power goal? Fashion, and meeting it's demands... What if serrated disc traps are suddenly "out"? What if everydwarf that's somedwarf lives in a fortress that has a hundred stories tall ramp made of crystal glass leading up to the entrance?

I say dwarves ought to require some style.  :)

DF Suggestions / Re: Better view to hand out jobs
« on: October 04, 2007, 01:58:00 pm »
I read the thread on the Taskmaster program, but I couldn't make out whether or not you can set the job preferences as well. Merely viewing them doesn't help much.

What I need is something that gives me an overview and lets me fiddle with job settings and profiles in a good manner. Haven't found anything so far...

Anything that makes the dwarves more intelligent is good, I say. And it does make sense to have the dwarves have a say in what jobs they take.

True, but I'm not interested in workarounds.

DF Suggestions / Bins used in hauling
« on: October 01, 2007, 04:49:00 pm »
You know all those annoying cleaning jobs? Where 30 dwarves are tied up for a month going to the entrance to pick up one shoe, and then going all the way to the chasm to drop it, and then going back for a mitten and so on?

I propose a method where an area or a room are tasked as one cleaning job, which is left to one dwarf to do. The first thing the dwarf does is to go to the store for an empty bin. The bin is then taken to the middle of the tasked cleaning area, whereupon the dwarf then goes around and picks up all the trash in the area and puts it in the bin.

After the trash is gone, or the bin is full, the dwarf goes to empty the entire bin at a time. Then, if there was more trash, it goes back to repeat the process. If not, it puts the bin back in the store.

One could even have a system with stationary bins that are set as trash receptacles. Dwarves will put trash there instead of the trash pile. Once in a while, haulers will haul the bin away to be emptied.

Those are some very disturbing visuals... Also, I haven't experimented a lot with this, but it does seem like animals reproduce through being in the same map area, which has also been confirmed by Toady.

In an aside, the only mammals I've seen capable of the feats described by the above posters are rats.  :)

You do know some of the privileged classes in some cultures have had special servants to take their punishments for them? The royals in feudal Europe strike me as an example, and I wouldn't be surprised if it happened during feudal times in India as well. Not to mention feudal China. I mean, how else do you spank a misbehaving five year old prince when laying hands on him is high treason and punished by death?

You know, that touched on something. Bins as temp receptacles for hauling jobs.

It would all be a lot better if their danger avoidance was good enough to understand the concept of ranged weapons and danger zones.  :)
