DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your adventure?
« on: October 01, 2021, 08:20:02 am »
Another world, another one man army swordsman. Dude has over a hundred and fifty kills, is covered head to toe in armour, and is honestly one of my strongest characters.

I've been trying to find fun things to fight, cause pretty much anything that feels pain inevitably dies too easily ( and that's pretty much every semi-megabeast ) and stuff that are too strong to fight ( bronze colossi ) would cost me this painstakingly built up character.

I savescummed and tried to fight Bogeymen ( which I just learned only spawn on evil biomes, and can transform now ). Was able to kill a fair few of them, before getting overwhelmed. Copied save file here we go.

The latest I've been doing is hunting forgotten beasts in their shrines, and so far have been lucky not to encounter any creatures with webs. Worst I've dealt with is a FB with dangerous blood, and apparently caused my dude's lungs to rot. Not sure if there's any long term effects or lethality, it's certainly not affecting my guy's breathing.

I really want to find a hydra. I keep getting directions to certain semi-megabeasts, like giants and cyclops, but then there's no actual cave to enter. Same for the one hydra I've seen pop up when I ask rulers about problems to solve.

I feel like a hydra strikes a good balance between "will die to me effortlessly" and "will kill me before I have the chance to do anything".

I feel like the biggest issue is, my demigod crawling character has high master dodger  :P So I always whiff at least one attack, even with professional and upwards striking, and his responding strike always either cripples me or removes my character's ability to breathe.

I might need to un-retire my vultureman character with legendary throwing, and just shower him with bolts from the air.

Fighting former adventurers is horrific. I made a demigod character, superior strength speed and toughness, and wrestlegrinded him up to legendary and superhuman in a bunch of stuff. THEN, this guy gets shot through the foot, motor nerve is gone. Guess he's retired.

I decide to do my old thing of building a new unarmed fighter to challenge him, doing all my usual grinding tactics, but starting from hero instead of demigod.

No matter how strong I made my current guy, everytime I'd go and try to kill this crawling, jacked sonuvagun, he'd land a single hit and demolish a part of my body. He'd consistently break the spine of the adventurers id make to go after him, and from there its just him beating me to death while on all fours.

Can't beat perfect genetics I guess.

Played through the best fight I've had in a while in DF Adventure Mode.

Made a swordsman character based off of King Fuhrer Bradley from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. I gave him an iron sword in character creation, and wrestlegrinded all of his combat stats until he had superhuman strength and speed, and superior in most of the others.

I then outfitted him in full iron armour scavenged from various hamlet buildings, and went off to find stuff to kill.

While searching for a cyclops, I stopped at an army in a town, thinking it would be a small band of bandits or a tiny army.

Cue combatants of every colour and weapon type surrounding me and closing in. They weren't aggressive yet, but if I attacked one of them, all of them would swarm. EXCELLENT.

I ran to to one end so they'd be coming from direction. I land one strike, crippling somebody immediately and I proceed to dodge like 5 different arrows and crossbow bolts.

Before the fight, I had 23 noticeable kills. By the end of it, I had 50.

ONE HIT was landed on my guy, who only has adept dodging ( with admittedly superhuman physicals ), and it was from an arrow that couldn't even get through all my armour.

I was dodging arrow fire like an Agent from the Matrix, every step I took towards the bunched up group of like 5 archers was accompanied by arrow fire, all dodged. Every hit I landed was either decapitation or a crippling injury ( when clothes didn't get in the way ).

My pickaxe fighter, whom I've named "Omni", is honestly pretty strong right now. I've decked him out in an almost full suit of iron, and his pickaxe is fucking lethal. It's gotten to the point where when I'm ambushed by animals, I make him fight them barehanded just so that the poor beasts last a few rounds.

I'm really lucky in this current world that there are actual semi and megabeast lairs that people can direct me to. Killed an ettin very quickly, by pickaxing it through the heart. It bled out as it ran away.

I then got a direct to a Roc lair across an ocean ( my world is basically an archipelago, but there is some water divide between the main lands ). Thankfully, the world temperature is warm, so I was able to start swimming at the crack of dawn, and even as night descended and the oceans got colder I was able to keep swimming until I hit dry land.

Honestly, the Roc was a bit of a letdown. I crippled it, knocked it unconscious and gouged out its eyes till death. Pretty much any monster that can feel pain dies too quickly against Omni.

Now Omni is stuck across a body of water, and there doesn't seem to be any towns in this part of the world.

I still find the premise of Spice and Wolf hilarious, from a storyboarding perspective.

"Hey, you know what would really make this romance anime work? ECONOMICS"

Made a nice hammer fighter in my new world, wrestlegrinded him until he was superhumanly strong and superior in all combat stats. I gave him a silver maul in character creation, and I was having a lot of fun beating the bones and limbs off of bandits.

When asking for a quest, my guy ( whom I named Stronghammer ) found the location of a Bronze Colossus shrine. Learning from many repeated past failures, I decided not to go at this one alone.

Brought a spear-woman with me, who honestly did really well in helping divide the Colossi's attention. But, even with all my guy's strength, and a goddamn silver maul ( which has to be the best blunt weapon in the game, right? ) I couldn't fracture any of its bones.

Eventually, my spearwoman companion got their leg broken, and I hoofed it out of there at full sprint, cause I knew the Colossus would start going after me once it killed her.

I had a few more adventures, but eventually decided to retire Stronghammer after he got shot through the lung with a crossbow bolt. It's always annoying playing characters that drop to half speed every few steps.

I made a new character, but this time I wanted to create somebody capable of hurting a Bronze Colossus. Spear and Swordsmen that I've made in past worlds were never able to fracture its limbs, or meaningfully damage it.

I decided to make a miner. I gave him the background of a miner in character creation, which actually put him at proficient in Mining to start with. I bumped it up to talented, and dumped the rest of my points into dodging ( and one point of swimming ).

I wrestlegrinded this guy all the way up to superior and superhuman stats, and boy was my iron pick a good weapon. After killing the usual amount of bandits, I decided to fulfill the next part of my plan.

I went to the hamlet I retired Stronghammer in, and found the Elite Wrestler in a house. After recruiting him, we went after the Bronze Colossus.

I wish I could say it ended in glorious victory. But the damn thing was too tough. I was able to fracture its foot, and its head ( probably because of me having an iron weapon with great penetration ), but that did absolutely nothing to cripple it, or bring it closer to death. I genuinely have no idea how to do enough damage to one to kill it. Get to legendary in mining?

Anyways, me and Stronghammer battered at it from all sides, and even with his faulty lung, Stronghammer did well as I desperately tried to rain down pick strikes and kill the damn bronze bastard. Eventually, Stronghammer got an upper arm beaten to a pulp, and his other lower arm broken. He had no hammer, we had no chance. I ran and hightailed it, far away enough to fast travel.

Imagine my surprise when I see that Stronghammer was still with me. Some scars on his arms, and I think permanent nerve damage in one, and minus his hammer. I renamed him "Armstrong", he's still a legendary wrestler multiple times over. And I sent him on his way.

It's nice not having a former character die on me for once.

Forgot to add your HP, apologies for that.

Spoiler: Shade (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Vera Dole (click to show/hide)

Vera, hitting her stride, manages to push her way past Shade, entering the interior first. [1] In her rush, she slips on a newspaper page on the floor, falling face-first right onto the tiles. Vera is now prone.

Startled, but still focused, Shade looks around for any weapons he can use. [6] At one end of the middle shelf, he sees a tire iron, partially hidden underneath the bottom of the shelf. He picks it up, and turns around to look at Vera, still on the floor.

Spoiler: Vera Dole (click to show/hide)

Shade, acting with surprising grace and decisiveness, moves towards the gas station building. He will reach the inside on the next turn.

Vera's eyes go big as she sees the boy dash for the doors of the gas station, but she does little to stop him. She looks around fidgetingly, not making any big moves.

Alright, here we go. Blackpaladin, Naturegirl, you're up.

Tonight's entertainment begins at the end of a derelict, nearly abandoned street. An old, out of use gas station is the arena of choice for our two fighters.

The two of them follow each other across the street, taking positions a few steps away from the 4 fuel pumps. To their side, is the building where one would pay for the gas, if it was still occupied. No lights are on, and it looks like nobody's been in there for months.

What do our combatants do?

Please remember to copy and paste your character sheets in spoilers, at the end of your turn. When needed, please put status effects in them too so I don't accidentally lose track in case all my notes get deleted

In my head, I liked the idea of having D12s, because while it allows for greater average damage, statistically it's also harder to get crits. Same for D6s being used for the dump stat.

Fluffe would have never been able to match you in terms of base damage output ( cause of their strength ), but had a 1/6 chance of getting crits compared to your 1/12 chance on any damage roll.

I might run this next fight with D12s, and then if it still feels overpowered to the players I'll put the top dice as a d10.

Spoiler: Slippery Pete (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Jack (click to show/hide)

Jack, undeterred by his dizziness, decides to end things once and for all. [12(!) vs 5-2]. With all of his might, Jack clenches his fists around Pete's mangled neck. A snap is heard, and Pete's eyes go blank. Slippery Pete shudders, his death rattle wanting to express one last "fuck you" to Jack. And then he's gone.

The fight is over.

Jack falls backwards, still bleeding from his leg, his hands covered in blood and bruises. With only 18 HP left, whether an ambulance can get to him in time is still up in the air.

Great fight guys. Feel free to go back through all the previous actions and perception rolls, to see how the other side fought.

Up soon:

Spoiler: Slippery Pete (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Jack (click to show/hide)

Pete, summoning all of his might, attempts to wrench himself out of the grapple [3 vs 12(!)]. Pitting strength against strength, however, turned to Jack's favour.

Jack manages to clamp down on Pete's throat again, not so much choking, but putting all his weight down on it to press Pete into the ground. With a sickening crunch, Pete's throat collapses. He's not dead yet, but the end is nigh.

Jack, sensing victory at last, brings his head down to crash on Pete's nose. [1 vs 4-3]. The bloodloss is rapid enough to make Jack's vision swim, and he's unable to complete the coup de grace.
