Can you view armor that you're equipping?  If so, check the decorations?

Whoa...that would be great! You could do uniform insignia then... squad leaders get uniforms studded with platinum, other ranks less valued metals until the lowest one gets copper. You then use another set of metals gems to denote the squad.

Well, it would take a lot of resources and micromangement for very little gain...


But calling your best dwarf "Platinum Commander UristMcDorf, squad leader of Diamond Squad and Commander of the Fortress' Militia" would be awesome and... dwarfy!

Are fat dwarves bigger? It may then turn out that Fatty McLard can wield a two-handed sword or something due to extra mass, average dwarf size is 60000 and the 2HS needs a size of 62500.

If you make everything out of platinum they'll still stay fat.
It's just genetics, you got more fat dwarves who have useless jobs. So they idle. The more they idle the more they become friends with people. Then they'll eventually get in a romance and you get a baby dwarf. That baby dwarf grows up to become a fat dwarf, spreading it's fatness to other dwarves.
Luck also plays a part in it.

That's not how real life genetics work...traits that are aquired during a lifetime aren't inherited to children, otherwise lets say the child of a one-armed war veteran would also be born one-armed.
However, you may already know that and you are commenting on our dwarven genetics, which may or may not work this way...any !!science!! done on this?

I don't really get the question. You usually always want the best armor possible....

Or are you afraid that the armor will slow your dorfs down too much? The answer is still max armor, then let them train until they are strong enough and armor user enough to run fast in full plate.

Well, I'm a perfectionist and I want to add every possible thing existing added to a civilization so that if that dorf likes blood thorn wood, nickel and faint yellow diamonds I'm able to get him exactly that.

Basically, something like this: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=77800.0 except that I want this for every stone, gem, clay, wood, plant, animal usw. It'll involve a lot of copypasta I think, which I intend to do myself yet I need some help setting this up.
Basically, I plan doing a reaction like in the above thread but which gives me the basic product of every category. So I'll need to know how I make a reaction to add basic stone, ore, gems (as if freshly mined), basic wood (freshly felled), clay, sand (how can I get those?) and everything else that I missed.

Likewise, I want the civ to have access to every single plant and animal, similarly to our dorfs always having access to plump helmets and cats. Can you help me there? Access to everything might invalidate the need for the wood reactions...

If someone wants the end result, I'll add it when I'm done so you can enjoy your caravans being able to bring native aluminium despite your world having minimal mineral density.

There's a glitch feature where marksdwarves will beat enemies to death before they shoot them.
Stationing them helps.

short: you need either below ground pig tails or above ground rope reed. then a farmers workshop where you process the stuff into threads. labor is threshing. then it goes to the loom, weaving labor. finally the cloth goes into a clothiers shop, clothsmaking labor. you can dye your stuff with for example below ground dimple cups if exporting is your goal, this increases value. need a quern to make the dye, then a dyers shop to actually dye. miller and dyer are the labors.

Agree that everyone should have enough bone bolts, but if copper is abundant then you can use copper bolts instead which are superior. And if they aren't, I'm still not going to use bugs. Hm, could you give everyone hunting labor and then restrict going outside with burrows so that everyone is armed with a crossbow? Could you do similar with woodcutters?

Stockpile a lot lot lots of ammo. No more bone bolts. Train a lot. Every crossbowman gets masterwork copper crossbows, every soldier get masterwork copper shields. Make a lot of masterwork those + masterwork full iron armor +masterwork copper hammers/maces in case of FUN so you can draft every single dwarf.
Stuff like barrels etc. will also be copper, of course.

And if you still got too much metal, dwarf up. Dwarves have NEVER too much metal!
