Those eagle-mounted Spearelves sound kickass.

Elves? Being kickass?

I know, right? It doesn't sound possible! But damn if riding into battle on a giant eagle doesn't sound like the single most awesome way to arrive... short of a dragon, I guess. That would be pretty damn awesome.

Dead tamed animals can't be butchered.
er, i said all were stray....

Animals your fortress owns are called "stray" until someone adopts them.

Unless you caught them wild, then they're listed as such until they are tamed - then they become "strays".

Has any science been done to determine whether Pastures are better for your FPS than just letting them run free?

If you don't pasture your tamed grazers, they'll die.

Which will certainly be better for your framerate.

My question: what am I supposed to do with caged tamed small animals? They just take up precious space in my stockpiles and I can't butcher the vermin inside.
Build a cage somewhere in a public place in the fortress.  Stick all the tamed small animals in it.  Dwarves who walk by will get a happy thought if any of the creatures they like are in it.  Additionally, dwarves who see a creature they detest in the cage will get an unhappy thought, so you may want to build a separate cage somewhere else to house the rats and cockroaches and such.
Build a cage out of wood, shove them all in there, then atomsmash it.

get a happy thought form his new masterwork Dwarf bone chair

WWUD if new chair broke

He'd go melancholy and would mope around. People would mistake his emotion as regret for murdering his mother-in-law.

What Would Urist Do if he went fey with a pile of adamantine?

Huzzah, the wound is gone! The arm is gone too, but the point is the wound is gone as well!
And nicely cauterized too, so you won't lose any more blood. See Urist? Magma is the answer to every one of life's questions.

Except badgers. Nothing kills those bloody things.

Why can't ambushes come one at a time?!!

I just had to fight in sequence a thiefmaster, goblin siege with crossbows and hammerers, okay survived that with only a few isolated dwarves killed. We start to clean the battlefield of crap: Ambush:ambush:ambush now the elves are back for a second round and they brought Warbears and war eagles.
A few days later, the fields are littered with wounded and unconcious dwarves, eagles, elves and bears. only a few have made it to the hospital, most of us lie dead. A spearmaster still roams the surface.
Those that survived are lucky to have all limbs or their sanity...

Oh wait, another elf ambush. Eagle spearelves this time...oh and some more They brought a swordmaster too and some more bears.
:(
we are doomed.
DOOMED! :D

edit: eh seems we survived...those forty mounted elves simply left. heh!

Those eagle-mounted Spearelves sound kickass.

He'd tame and ride that bad boy.

What would Urist and his pet dragon do?

1059
Yeah, this happened to me too.

Their very first caravan brought awesome tame animals. Tame Tigerman and giant leopard! I couldn't exactly afford any of it... In an entirely unrelated occurrence, my major export that year was cloth. So much cloth.

Ostriches? Really?
Ostriches, like many animals, are gastroliths. The stones they use for this process are often ground down and smoothed by their time in the animal, and can be quite pretty once cleaned.

Huh. You learn something new every day.

I, for one, am looking forward to the differing gem cuts... A brilliant-cut diamond is apparently the best cut for them. Just think how much that would be worth!

And it only works with goblets and not with any other type of finished good?  :o

Making a mug or goblet produces three items from one unit of input - so you get a decent flow going. Selling each one gets appraisal experience and melting each one gets furnace operating experience - so the 'experience return' on goblets is higher than most other creations.

However, if you're not careful you will bury your fortress under an unending tide of unusable trinkets.

1062
Ostriches? Really?

Okay then.

What I read of his report suggested to me that the gems would be cut in different ways, yes - but into the different gem styles. Brilliant cut, Princess cut, emerald cut, oval, etcetera. That's what I thouht Toady was getting at...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Caged Animals
« on: June 14, 2011, 01:21:26 am »
So, to summarise (and gather everyone's advice in one spot)

First: Build all of the cages. When building a cage and you have to select which one, press {x} to choose from a specific cage.

Then: {d} {b} {c} and draw a box over the cages - this claims everything inside, since armour ad weaponry worn by not-your-dwarves is automatically forbidden to you.

Then: {d} {b} {d} over the cages - this designates everything for dumping. Wait for some idle dwarves to strip the goblins clean. Depending on how much work you have backed up, this can go quickly or can take years.

Then: {k} to switch to the item-cursor and pass over each cage. You'll see the cage name with a bright pink D next to it; press {d} on your keyboard to undesignate the cage itself for dumping.

Then: {d} {b} {c} over your garbage pile to reclaim everything dumped there. At this point, your dwarves should move everything not-garbage to their respective stockpile.

Then murder the goblins and display their corpses in humorous ways.

light elves on fire instead

WWUD if there was no way to light fires

Start one accidentally from the friction of his beard moving as he thinks on how to start a fire.

What would Urist do with a glass warhammer?

My question: Underground lakes provide sourced, infinite, water, correct? Or is it only if they run up against the map edge? I suspect the latter, but am not sure and cannot find a certain answer.

My experience agrees with the latter; as long as there is a tile on the edge of the map, infinite water is yours for the taking.

Otherwise, it's finite.
