Dear Competant Swordsdwarf,
You are one of the starting seven, bound by your rule that you live or die to the fort you make. You are our Militia Commander and armed in full steel. You are currently in charge of training up 3 more dabbling recruits.

And when the scouts raised the alarm, you told everyone to stay inside. The doors blocking the invaders were jammed by a leftover piece of dolomite and everyone else was too busy panicking to remove them.

You were the only one who stood against a 12 goblin squad, led by a Jabberer. I was watching you raise your axe and shield as you taunted them by our door. I never knew you had such colorful language.

No one else was brave enough to stand at your side but your pet war dog. When they came, you charged in unison. I thought you would die to the Jabberer but your dog saved you, allowing you to chop it up, the goblins fled in terror as you cut them by the heel.

But alas, your dog has fallen and now you are unhappy although we are partying because of your brave success. Not even a scratch! I applaud your self-less act, but we sadly cannot replace your dog. Just made a statue of you and it though.

Our hero is you.

Knowing about macros in game AFTER doing most important things, even in adventurer mode when you train up knapping/archery...

Wait...This isn't much of a facepalm, I learned how to increase my FPS in typing.

I've never bothered making any clothes for my dwarves, but I've just found out that clothing can wear out. Does that mean it will eventually disappear? Even if the dwarf is wearing it? Am I gonna end up with a bunch of butt-naked dwarves running around my fort? And do I really need to bother making them clothes if the answer is yes?

Yes. Currently, they don't bother to get (wear) new clothes. They go claim em and sometimes leave them on the floor. To fix that, you put all civilians in the military and assign clothing to them.

It will take years for XxclothesxX to wear out though, represented by the 'X's.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Do you lock yourself in?
« on: September 05, 2011, 01:10:15 am »
For starters, not walling yourself in and giving the enemy a *fair* shot at your fort works "normally". Even if the only entrance is filled with traps and a magma-trapped room, that counts.

Try embarking on biomes that have salt water, have aquifers. Glacier fortresses? Or haunted/evil biomes! They give free experience for military (mostly...)

Also, not using a danger room but trusting in your military and siege/traps would count. I've never used traps in any of my forts, they live on cold hard steel.

Also, drawbridges work as walls. The only entrance barred by a drawbridge, that still works.

How can one add a weapon to a vanilla game? Like modding in a Longbow, different from a bow. Do you have to regen the world and maybe put some tokens in so the game will recognize the new item?
Yes. You make a new bow in the item_weapon folder, and add the tags for it under the entity section. You'll need a re-gen.

Thanks!!  :)

Hi Deon, I have minor thing to report (with version d)

Hippo in genesis are very timid and will run from dwarves. In RL hippo is extremely ridiculously aggressive. This might be the ruin of many a fort, but I believe hippo deserve the [PRONE TO RAGE] tag.
Hippos are territorial beasts, they are aggressive to those who intrude in their territory. If a dwarf lands in the river filled with hippos, they die. If they see a dwarf that is not in the river but on land, they run? The last sentence should be wrong...

Small question, did anyone try dropping a dwarf in 7/7 water into a pool of 7/7 water and draining it to see if he lives? 5 z-levels minimum. I somehow can't find a way to get any of my men in water...at all.

<Was going to test it but failed due do inefficiency>

Goblins are technically immortal...
Goblins and Elves do not die by old age, are they related? My guess is yes.

How does one quote an entire thread to the *facepalm* thread?

I've dug over ~1000 z-levels in fort lifetime, trained archery and crutch-walking manually, even knapped about 30 stones by hand and only now do I see what ____ does...

At least I can type quite well now.

Started off as a Sylvan, I came lucky with this one as the speed was of over 2000. No modding except for the fact that it is Genesis. She proved to be a very valuable asset, bringing down many night terrors.

Sadly, the world was too young to see thieves or bandits so all she had to kill from the start were night creatures and Bogeymen. Impossible for a novice archer but since elves are skilled in blade and bow...well...

Using the terrain and height, she quickly became known and honored throughout the land. The law-giver of the humans decided to kill her off by sending her alone to face the last marsh titan, with 35 kills under its belt he knew she would meet her demise.

Amala went on alone, with only a longbow and buckler. (Modded in a weak short sword slashing attack to the longbow, the buckler for Role-playing reasons. I guess I was lucky to get a lightning fast elf.) For days she trudged through the land, resting where safety lay. The mountains, blessed by the dwarves to keep any terror of the night at bay.

Then she came upon the shrine and sighted out the titan, pure black in color with two gigantic wings. It was flying in mid-air.

Damn, this was tough. It did actually have 35 kills, corpses were strewn across the paved shrine floor. She only had one singing arrow left and that was what she used as a weakening shot.

It hit the head and lopped it off in one blow, the body crashing on the rocks below.

The titan was made of ash...and it had thirty-five kills

Truly anticlimactic.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Does armour wear out?
« on: September 01, 2011, 03:31:47 am »
Only clothing wears out. Armor does not  :)

Wear and tear are defined by a long time period/contact with fire or magma. Not how many hits the user takes (like the danger room)

Letters. If you play with letters and symbols instead of graphics, that's an ASCII variant (original).

ooooohhh....does it come wiht its own tileset?

Yes, the tileset is letters  :) . Genesis (Deon's Mod) has a graphics tileset or the normal ASCII tileset. The graphics uses pictures instead of letters. If you could search up what a roguelike game is, you will know what ASCII will be. Kind of simplified graphics.

(Sorry if this answer didn't sound right  :P )

And to the thread creator, Genesis adds what most mods have (like Wanderer's friend for one) and adds more from the creators (You now have special leather armor instead of normal leather.). But if you are going with Genesis, pick the ASCII one. The graphics is partly outdated since Deon is working on the ASCII.

Fought another Forgotten Beast. It exuded a poisonous miasma. I don't know if it paralyzed, but it got in the lungs of animals and dwarves and killed them. I lost 20 people to that beast. NONE in combat. All of them died from the dust cloud.

Was there anyway to avoid those deaths? (EDIT: Meaning to neutralize or stop that miasma/gas/dust?)

Let's face it. It doesn't matter what kind of armor your dwarves are wearing or how much of it they are wearing or even if they know how to use it. Every dwarf needs to breath.

Shoot it with crossbows/ranged soldiers after walling up your fort  :)

i can see plenty of "dark goblin fortresses" on my map, i'v yet to be to one tho but i plan on going to one soon

You cannot go into a goblin fortress in the current version (nor can you visit DMH's or EFR's - Dwarven Mountain Halls or Elven Forest Retreats.). Toady is working on them currently so you can only visit Human towns/fortresses in an unmodded game.

And stuff spreads out in a town/camp/fortress, it doesn't get lost but just scatters. In a lair, it does not.
