Play With Your Buddies / Re: Aira's Playing (Stardew Valley 1.1)

Oh man, it's been a while, eh? I haven't had much time for games and especially not for editing, but I'm going to try this for a while, just short 1-day-each episodes of the new patch of Stardew Valley. I'm playing a dwarfy character on the hill-top map. Suggestions are welcome.

Episode 1

First video is up! I'll probably put new ones up every other day or so until I develop enough of a buffer of days to make it a daily thing.

EDIT: Oh, goodness, I just stumbled upon the Slime Animals mod, and I am sorely tempted to grab it... Opinions?

We managed to resist the temptation to put food colourant into any of this.

Why?

I know my internet isn't great, but I feel like maybe it's the virtual LAN that's making it completely unplayable. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is Evolve no good? Is there another option now that Hamachi has imploded? Or is it really just my internet, and I have no options until I save up enough money to move to a neighborhood with faster internet?

Its probably your internet, modded minecraft demands a lot of bandwidth and a 10kbps upload is nowhere near sufficient. That said, it might be worth getting rid of the virtual LAN - the person hosting the server needs to set up port forwarding, then you can connect directly. Failing that, you could pay for a professionally hosted server, your own download is still on the low side for minecraft but it should work better than trying to host on your connection.

We were playing modded minecraft before, though. In fact, we were using way more mods than we are now. It seems a bit odd that the game would get SO completely unplayable when my download/upload speed really doesn't seem to have changed very much.

As for a server, it's my mom who hosts the game, and she just has a regular single-player game and opens to LAN. The idea of teaching her how to set up a server is just... That's never going to happen. This is a woman who, when I tell her to download a file and then ask her where she saved it, says "I don't know what the hell you are talking about. I clicked the button like you told me." If there is a simple way to set up a server, that would be fine, but if it's as complicated as servers seem to be from my limited experience, it's just not an option. (She's in another country, six time zones away, so it's not like I can just go visit and set it up for her.) I don't think it's worth paying for a server, either, since we play about once a month.

I've decided that next time we have a chance, we'll try playing something through Steam and see if it works. If we manage without lag, then it's probably Nexus, and we need to find another way to connect...

Humble Bundle is having another Android bundle. Includes Goat Simulator and some nice puzzles, among others.

So... Apparently there's a mod that let's you marry ALL the single adults in the game, including Linus. It's not updated for 1.1.1 yet, but... I'm considering grabbing this. I started recording a few days of my LP (sorry, no chance to upload them yet - hopefully tomorrow), and I've been complaining nonstop about how pathetic the choice of male candidates is and how much better it would be if I could marry Clint or Linus, proper dorfs with beards and all. Should I add this mod (and accept the possibility of bugs/problems later) and marry one of them? Or stick to what's available in vanilla (which probably means marrying Sebastian, because he at least lives underground in the dark, intolerable emo teenager that he is)? In any case I need to wait for the mod to be updated for the latest version, but I do like the idea of it. Opinions?

I've got a multiplayer question... My internet connection is pretty crappy and generally quite slow. I pay for 10 Mbps but I get a maximum actual download speed of about 300 kbps, and upload speed around 10 kbps. This is clearly too slow, but at the moment, there are literally no other options in my neighborhood, and calling tech support is useless - they know I have no other options and won't even reduce the amount I pay. In the past, I was able to play Minecraft with my mom using a virtual LAN on Hamachi. Over time, Hamachi started having more and more problems, and eventually we were unable to get it working at all - it just won't connect anymore. Our games were getting laggier and laggier over time, too, which I assumed was my internet connection getting worse (as it does seem to be doing). But we were always able to play before. Now we've given up on Hamachi and are trying Evolve. It's so laggy that it's completely unplayable. It takes ages for me to connect to her (she's the one hosting the LAN, since she has fast internet), I'm unable to do anything (it literally takes me 3 minutes to open a chest, and even sending chat text takes several minutes), and after a few minutes I get booted. We thought it was because we were using voice chat and that was hogging the bandwidth, so I turned off the voice chat and everything else using the internet connection, and it still doesn't work. Zero improvement.

Oh! And male or female character, don't forget the beard! XD

Already on that. ;) And I do LOVE that the game lets you make your character look however you want regardless of the gender you choose. I'll be a dwarfy beardy lady. Obviously I'll be brewing everything as soon as possible. I'm looking forward to this now. I'll start this evening (though I can't promise when I'll have access to fast enough internet to upload videos... le sigh).

With the new maps available, I feel like I have to do an LP now. I haven't made any videos in months (no time), but if I do one video per in-game day, that's short enough (and requires almost no editing). I'll have to go for the hill-top map and make myself an Urist. I'm thinking over some kind of challenge. Obviously the focus will be on mining and removing all trees, plants, etc. from the farm and paving over as much of it as possible. Should Urist be allowed to farm? Maybe only certain crops? And what about the community center - I've already gotten the achievement for restoring it, so maybe I'll go the Joja route and be evil. Hmmmmmm. Ideas?

You shouldnt have cooked rice and lentils together. You should have cooked lentils separately because they take longer to cook. Rice gets very sticky and lumpy when you overcook it. Also, jasmine rice is very glutinous, making the problem worse.

I cooked the lentils for 15 minutes before adding the rice (and its water). I do this with green lentils all the time and it works perfectly, but with the red, it was a big mess! :o

Failure! I have created a total cooking failure for the first time in ages. Worse, I'm not sure exactly where I went wrong. Some combination of what I cooked last night for dinner turned it into a ball of rubber. Please, genius cookerdwarfs, tell me what I must change for next time.

It was very simple. I'm recovering from food poisoning so I looked for the gentlest stuff I could find without forcing myself to ever eat another banana again for the rest of my life. I sauteed some onion, carrot, and fresh ginger in a very small amount of olive oil. Then I added a cup of red lentils and 1.5 cups of water and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Then I added a cup of jasmine rice, another 1.5 cups of water, and about a half a teaspoon of turmeric. It quickly turned into a sticky mess. The water floated on top and the rest was just a sticky goop with hard pieces of rice in it. What the hell happened? Is it the turmeric? The combination of red lentils and rice? I know it's fine to do this with green lentils, but red are gentler on my stomach. I managed to get the rice mostly cooked by constantly stirring it and adding a little more water, but holy cow was that not at all what I had intended.

The final product tasted okay, but as it dried, it quickly turned to something like rubber and became increasingly difficult to eat. Worse, when I tried to scrape the last out of the pan, I discovered a layer of it had stuck to the bottom and burned. So, uh... Yeah. That was fun to clean, as well.

Help!

shoot; day0 patches, day0 DLC, it's been happening for over a decade now, and it has nothing to do with the size of the development studio or the publishers behind the game.  Early Access and Kickstarter has just codified what was the big boys were already doing.

And lets be totally honest here:  It would have been happening in the 1980s If companies didnt have to get floppy disks to your local game store.  In the 70's if they had a way of remotely patching the audio cassette you hooked up to your 8 bit supercomputer.  It is only the distribution mechanism that was preventing it from happening previously.

But hey, that's fine.  I'd rather see lots of rapid innovation and fresh ideas and tiny indie games that don't work quite right but continue to get patched if they catch on.  The alternative is that you only ever see games that have a huge development and QA budget, which means someone is only going to fund it if it is a sure bet, which means a return to the doldrums of safe, derivative, boring games from the 90's and early 2000's.

Sure, there is a lot of slop out there.  But there is also lots of great stuff that we wouldn't get to play with otherwise.  It really seems to be a golden age for this kind of stuff.

I concur!

Friends, I am looking for a reasonably simple but tasty and filling couscous dish. I don't normally cook couscous, but I bought a box of it and I need ideas. I'm trying to feed a very hungry man in addition to my more humble self, so filling recipes are the goal. I usually cook without meat but lately I've started cooking some chicken once a week or so, so that's an option. Any suggestions?

Guys, this discussion seems like something that the Almighty Toad won't like. Maybe we can leave it where it is and return to discussion of sales?

Game has been patched. Novakids have live in places now and the tier 10 moon cheese farm no longer works.

Noooooo, my moon cheese!!! Dangit.

What happens when you build a colony on a moon now? Or to previously established colonies?
