I used to build a chest and a cabinet in every dwarf's room. After a while, they still left stuff around, though there was some in the containers.

Military or moodcrafters.

You could always use more soldiers. And you can train the rest in a craft that would hopefully get you a nice artifact :)

I think that it would be nice to have a wiki article with actual screenshots of settings for various combinations of items.

That, or maybe a Therapist-like script or a program that lets you choose items from a list or drop-down menu, and generates a simulation of the game screens.

Sounds good. Those trees are growing pretty slowly.

I'd recommend walling the dwarves in and disabling most labors so that they don't pause the game all the time. Might go faster that way :)

This is very interesting :)

It looks like a year and a half has already passed. I think that at least another year and a half will pass before you have anything conclusive...

Something I've observed in my tree farms, is that (at least on muddied rock) some areas that were muddied later, had some trees growing much sooner that the first muddied areas.

This probably means that there is a separate variable growth time for each tree sapling. Also it seems that Fungiwood is growing much faster than towercap.

make sure they have no woodcutter/hunter labor assigned, because that may cause uniform problems. Better disable all labors.

The only dwarves I can find who don't have the 'tired of drinking the same old booze lately' thought are those who 'prefer to consume dwarven wine'.  Those dwarves have thoughts of 'had a wonderful drink', 'had a fine drink', 'had a pretty decent drink', 'had a truly decadent drink'.  How nice they thought the drink was seems to be randomly distributed.  Either there are hidden quality levels to drinks after all, or how much a dwarf enjoys a drink is semi-random.
1) Atom-smash all existing drinks.
2) Assign brewing to all dwarves
3) Assign workshop profile to dabbling only
4) Observe thoughts, as they only drink stuff made by noob brewers

Reset, as in everything on the ground disappears, and in the morning there's something random in the shop, with a fully stocked money chest. Don't leave your stuff on the ground if the night is coming soon.

I think it's completely random. Sometimes you can see a whole lot of shops selling the same stuff, sometimes you'll hardly find one.

Only stops construction if it's 3/7.
My dwarves suspended cunstruction at 1/7 for some reason. I noticed that when I was trying to contain an accidental river or aquifer flood.

Every night the shops do get reset for some reason. This allows you to buy more bolts and arrows :)

You can also steal stuff from the empty shops, and then sell it to the other merchants  :o

Certain items should always be bought, and personally I hate "wasting" a season's worth of caravan supplies by not buying them, because they are usually so limited.

Things like this might be worth mentioning when you do a military/siege tutotrial as well.

It's a nice series :)

A minor nitpick about the caravan episode: I'd recommend always buying gypsum powder from the caravans. This is very important, especially to newbies :)
