DF Gameplay Questions / Re: No-one Will Diagnose Patient
« on: October 30, 2012, 06:20:16 am »
Maybe jamming the broken bone through the muscles? Very inexperienced people trying to take care of broken bones are known to accidentally do that...

Urist McPatient has been stung in his rear left muscle by a bee!

Urist Mc Doctor pulls the sting with his right upper arm!

The sting is pushed through Urist McPatient's rear left muscle into his head, bruising the muscle, jamming the skull through the brain and tearing the brain!

Urist McPatient has been struck down.

Do you know if there happens to be any 34.XX versions of those have the ability to inflict stasis on a dwarf, locking all their stats down and making them immobile until I unfreeze them?

It's already in the game, we call it ice and magma.

 :P

Killing the leader will cripple their capacity to fight, though, and stop them from bringing in mounts.

That's pretty disappointing if you're looking for big fights. It's hard to avoid killing him, and mounts make it much more interesting...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Soap consumption
« on: October 30, 2012, 01:39:29 am »
I used to have a lot of difficulties with soap production. Partly the manufacturing process (rock nut soap), partly consumption rates...

Now I tried making tallow soap, and it's been an entirely different experience. I made some stacks of soap several game years ago, and most of it is still there, even with the population of over 100.

Has it been changed in the recent versions? Right now it's pretty easy to make it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Workaround: Cleaning floors
« on: October 29, 2012, 03:09:40 pm »
Here's another not-so-obvious trick. You know how dwarves typically ignore blood and contaminants? Well not anymore :D

Building something on a floor (constructed or otherwise) will remove any contaminants. I typically have a decent supply of beds, and the key bindings favor their mass deployment.

My previous workaround involved deconstructing the floor  ::) Not very convenient for floors that use a pattern of any kind.

My dwarves clean floors with beds... this requires some time to sink in...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Mass-Assigning Burrows and Squads
« on: October 29, 2012, 12:26:20 pm »
Civilian Burrow allows you to assign all non-military dwarves to a burrow.

Splinterz version of Dwarf Therapist allows you to assign dwarves to squads.

I just give dwarves nicknames, and assign them manually from the list.

You can view the garbage zones you've created by presing Shift+r ;)

You can't make platinum and aluminum axes either.

Which essentially makes the military useless considering you can do a better defense using three mechanics, two masons, two miners and a carpenter in a month than 40 dwarves can put up after having trained for a year. You and I seem to agree on this. After the traps, bridges and such have been set up those dwarves can do something else as well. The only thing military is good at is patching up the few holes an unexperienced player might create and killing off the odd forgotten beast who flies over all the traps and walls.

At two-three ambushes and sieges per year, nevermind beasts, your supply of mechanics and masons will quickly dry up without dedicated military.

Untrained civilians do a great job in an emergency, but they are definitely not the same as military.

Why would you want to, anyway?

Dwarf Fortress?

Rock pots and lead bins for everyone!

My dwarves wanted me to tell you how much they hate you.

I've been spoiling them with featherwood bins and barrels.

At some point I just keep the largest stacks of plants, and throw away everything else.

Then I only cook on demand.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Keeping your dwarves busy
« on: October 28, 2012, 09:08:21 am »
I just found a way to keep them busy.

Assign some animals to a pasture. Build some chains, and assign those animals to the chains.

Dwarves start tying them to the chains, then untying and pasturing them in a loop.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Leather cloaks etc on steelclad dwarves
« on: October 28, 2012, 03:33:33 am »
to get more leather, there are some relatively easy tricks. first off, find a good animal to breed.

100 dwarves, 30+ of which are military. Just the military requires 480+ leather each year or two. With civilians swiping leather armor, double/triple that amount.

With animal popcap at 50, you need to micromanage pasturing and butchering how many different animals to get 500-600 leather per year?

Also, butchering so many animals will cause an fps death due to massive amounts of deceased animals.

Lether industry doesn't look too appealing for a medium-sized fort...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Broken Invaders

I vaguely remember something about killing a goblin leader, which causes invasions to stop or something, does it sound familiar to anyone?
