DF Suggestions / Re-spawning orders?
« on: August 28, 2006, 06:55:00 am »
I noticed that sometimes, an order is canceled because there is a shortage of the required material for the job - or at least, that's what the message seems to imply.

The thing is, sometimes this (probably repeating) job is critical to the whole fortress' wellbeing (like, the one kitchen's "prepare meal" job, or something). When a temporary shortage cancels the job, one has to remember to re-add the job when conditions look better.

Couldn't there be an option to make repeated jobs reappear automatically some short time after they get cancelled? Like, the [r] (toggle repeat) key would cycle a job between "one-shot", "repeat", and "respawn repeat" (or whatever this would be called)...

DF Suggestions / Selecting material for building
« on: August 28, 2006, 06:50:00 am »
In many cases, when creating a building, one gets the choice of a material/object to build with. Since the list tends to be so long, with many repeats, I assume one gets to choose a specific piece of material, not just a type and quality.

Now, there is (apparently) no way to see _where_ this specific piece of material is currently located. With potentially many stockpiles, there could be a huge difference in the amount of hauling this could entail. So, why not have the player select just a type and quality, and let the dwarf picking the job choose the most appropriate? (or, if dwarves are supposed to look at distances when picking their next job, just auto-select the "most appropriate" object when the job is created)

DF General Discussion / Light/Dark stone
« on: August 28, 2006, 10:12:00 am »
I've read in the ingame help that "light" and "dark" stone are more valuable, and should be saved, or something, but...

How do I tell one kind from the other? I mean, in my stockpiles, all stone looks the same, even though there are many different kinds when I build something; but I don't know how to tell them apart.

Or do "light" and "dark" stone only appear later? I've only crossed the underground river once.
