DF Suggestions / Re-spawning orders?
« on: August 28, 2006, 06:55:00 am »
I noticed that sometimes, an order is canceled because there is a shortage of the required material for the job - or at least, that's what the message seems to imply.

The thing is, sometimes this (probably repeating) job is critical to the whole fortress' wellbeing (like, the one kitchen's "prepare meal" job, or something). When a temporary shortage cancels the job, one has to remember to re-add the job when conditions look better.

Couldn't there be an option to make repeated jobs reappear automatically some short time after they get cancelled? Like, the [r] (toggle repeat) key would cycle a job between "one-shot", "repeat", and "respawn repeat" (or whatever this would be called)...

DF Suggestions / Selecting material for building
« on: August 28, 2006, 06:50:00 am »
In many cases, when creating a building, one gets the choice of a material/object to build with. Since the list tends to be so long, with many repeats, I assume one gets to choose a specific piece of material, not just a type and quality.

Now, there is (apparently) no way to see _where_ this specific piece of material is currently located. With potentially many stockpiles, there could be a huge difference in the amount of hauling this could entail. So, why not have the player select just a type and quality, and let the dwarf picking the job choose the most appropriate? (or, if dwarves are supposed to look at distances when picking their next job, just auto-select the "most appropriate" object when the job is created)

DF General Discussion / Re: Decent game...but why no graphics?
« on: August 29, 2006, 01:01:00 pm »
Now, I played a lot of Nethack (back when it didn't have tiles), Angband (both when it was still Moria, and later), and the like, so I'm not bothered by ASCII - and, as someone pointed out, a D can be as scary as it gets (only, be careful when switching roguelikes - and "d" changes from representing your puppy to a young dragon).

But then, there's the question of screen readability. When playing, I don't recognise the difference on-screen between a workshop and another workshop - so, since I'm still discovering the game and not planning my fortress layout too well, I'm always lost when I need to find a specific workshop. Using more customized characters could make the screen much more readable.

Now, for what is "needed", or even what "we the players" can build - DF is made, for their own reasons, by two people. Nothing is "needed" but what they want to put in it. And  since they decided not to release it as free software - their completely legitimate decision, even though I'm have made a different one if I had one percent of their talent and dedication, which I don't - there isn't much that one can do to "help". Wesnoth works differently, and tries to appeal to a different crowd (I happen to sit in both, but again, that means nothing), under a completely different development model. Apples and oranges...

DF General Discussion / Light/Dark stone
« on: August 28, 2006, 10:12:00 am »
I've read in the ingame help that "light" and "dark" stone are more valuable, and should be saved, or something, but...

How do I tell one kind from the other? I mean, in my stockpiles, all stone looks the same, even though there are many different kinds when I build something; but I don't know how to tell them apart.

Or do "light" and "dark" stone only appear later? I've only crossed the underground river once.

DF General Discussion / Re: GodComplex (My fort)
« on: August 28, 2006, 10:23:00 am »
I understand that "demons" are nasty stuff that comes from the lava river (never seen them, I have yet to significantly settle over the underground river), but I don't see how the setup is supposed to kill them. Is the large complex of 5x5 rooms supposed to be flooded in case of an attack?

Also, I don't understand the reason for the large north/south tunnels near the entrance.

Oh, and am I the only one who thinks engraved rooms just look ugly? I mean, smoothed is fine, but engraved is just unreadable.
