Building between magma and chasm is a problem for 5 reasons

1) Traders, and a massive distance between the depot and the entrance, or between the goods and the depot
2) Trees, need a loooong walk to get, but an underground forest should suffice
3) If a dwarf goes on break and decides to visit the entrance, or to collect some item from outside....
4) Once you hit the demons, if they cross the magma, you're in trouble, you don't have much space to lose before the panic begins
5) Most importantly: Attacks from Chasm + Attacks from magma = you have two sides to defend.

A workshop needs to be built by the person with that profession. Use Q and choose the workshop, you should get "XXXX Requires: [profession]". For example a fishery needs a fishclear/fisherdwarf. Check that its not suspended.

Engineers dont' connect levers, they're SIEGE engineers - making siege equipment. As for mechanics, I suggest you remove all jobs except the mechanic one, to make him get to work.

Fullscreen and windowed mode still show the same amount of tiles...

No it won't...

This is one of those irritating things, the only way to solve them is to put the crossbow into a room, force the dwarf to drop his weapons, move him into that room; lock the door, then make him pick up a crossbow. He'll automatically pick up the closest one.

Here's a section from 'peacelaboured' my old fort.

Efficiency-wise it could be better, but you get the idea...

Towards the top of the picture you can see I put a 'living' area to prevent them from having to walk for food and whatnot.

(Added: The strange shaped thing at the bottom is the barracks, I didn't put that there because of the forge, but rather a coincidence..)

Most items (for example armour stands or cages) need to be MADE at the appropriate workshop before they can be placed. Workshops, roads, trade depots, supports, forges ect... can be made from the raw materials

A cow has a maxage of 10-20 apparently
