Welp, I guess I'm not working late today then.

I like thinking about these ideas. If you simulate a brain in a computer, and it becomes conscious, is turning off the program or the computer like committing murder? Perhaps it's something like humans having a "sleep button".

I got creeped out by imagining the norns learning that when you move the mouse to the upper-right corner of the screen (the X close button), they'd start pleading to you not to do it. And that this behaviour wasn't pre-programmed... and then when you wake them up, they'd be conscious of all the time that went by, and realized they were missing the world.

What if all of a sudden it really isn't just a game?

I'm really sad this is over. I was thoroughly enjoying seeing this alternate history version of the Pacific Theatre develop, and was looking forward to figuring out how far Japan could go. Just yesterday I brought a 1/48 scale model of an F4F Wildcat to spruce up the office and was getting in a WW2 mood again...

I've also not touched IL2 since I came back to Portugal months ago. I never got used to the new controllers either (CH pedals and fighterstick), and my lack of time and patience looks like it's bound to be here for a while yet. Otherwise I'd try to set up some IL2 campaign, even if just cooperative vs AI (although for you that must be boring as heck!).

I hope you keep making AARs of your games though. They've positively awesome :)

I'm confused about the multiplayer - is it just the battles? The description on the MP mission is unclear. It says it pits an alien player and a human player for control of the world, which implies the entire campaign in multiplayer, but that sounds unlikely.

Wasn't there an X-Com remake that had multiplayer campaigns, and then it was no longer available or supported? That stuff would be way interesting.

Honestly, the comment wasn't so much directed at the X-com FPS as it was at the general state of the AAA gaming industry. Clones upon clones upon clones... the same formula applied ad nauseam. It got slightly better with the advent of a big indie community, but I feel most indie games these days are using the same gimmicks, or are just low-quality and low-depth.

Seeing X-Com being remade as a well thought out iteration of the turn-based genre within a AAA format is a breath of fresh air. I want to help prove that it can be financially successful, so that the AAA community will be more open to these projects. Another good AAA game that comes to mind is Crusader Kings 2, if you consider Paradox as AAA :)

Well screw it.

Bought this on principle. I want companies to do more of what Firaxis has done with the X-com franchise. Lots of money or not, this is how we show support for non-braindead-FPS-clone...

SPAZ is a really nice game that puts people off mostly because of its name... which really is too bad. It deserves more credit than it got!

Whoa, the text in the spoilers sold it for me. I'll have to try the demo :)

It seems my finger has slipped, accidentally clicked the mouse, which by happenstance was on the buy button, randomly followed by a sneezing spree that caused me to ...

Anyway, I am downloading some of these...

All I could find was the FAQ:

What are your plans for player created content / modding?

It’s something we’d love to have, but will likely be outside of our initial scope. We’re open to considering it post release.

Also, some topics on the forums.

I have SPAZ and Shatter, I tend to avoid single-player RPGs like Torchlight, and am not too into platformers :(

If I could gift SPAZ and Shatter I'd get it, mostly for Dustforce 'cause that seems cool :)

So, with all the wins reported here, i guess the game is actually easy and small compared to, say, Stonesoup?

It is much easier to win. I've put countless hours into Stone Soup and never won, and I've won one game in over 15h here. That said, there's plenty of stuff to unlock that actually changes the gameplay, and games are quicker than a Stone Soup game. Overall, I'd say there's quite a bit more luck involved, but more streamlined tactical decisions. So, simpler but also different and with a lot of space for trying out different strategies within a smaller envelope than Stone Soup. If that makes any sense!

You'll also notice that despite the wins, quite a few people are complaining a bunch. I'm starting to think half the computers in the world have a nice RNG and half have a bad RNG :)

Yeah, that's how I won once - by having tons of burst lasers. You have two ways to get them:
- The RNG is kind today and smiles down upon you.
- The RNG hates you and frowns down upon you, but instead of investing scrap into making your ship more survivable, you keep a lot of it around and visit every store you can get for burst lasers. The problem is generally you need upwards of 150 scrap for burst laser (about 70?), plus two energy (about 45) plus weapons systems (another 70 or more). That's 150 scrap you could've invested in actually surviving, and generally I don't survive :P

I played a few games yesterday but the game kept throwing me curve balls... I ragequit about 5 times or so...

Anyway, when the RNG is a little more compliant, I think a good strategy might be to have about 80 scrap to spare AT ALL TIMES. Then you can make sure to visit all the stores you find. A burst laser comes up? Buy it. Long-range scanners? Buy it. A non-standard crew? Buy it. Weapons pre-igniter? You should've had 120 scrap instead ;)

Kael: what is the science of getting 4 burst lasers? Please tell!
