Huehuehue. Just go for joint locks. Krav maga their faces off.
Locks elevate combat from Brawl to Non-Lethal.

I read this as "no dice (objects crafted and assigned to temples.)" For a second I was very confused: "But dice are a tavern item, and I thought only in adventure mode?"

Also, worship needs aren't being met in 40.02 due to a bug, but there's a bugfix in the next release. Dwarves also won't spar, which might be why the "martial art" need isn't being met. I wish you could assign an area as a "gym" for dwarves to practice when they need to; that would reduce the micromanagement needed.

I thought that was a 40.01 bug? My dwarves are receiving all the positive thoughts of praying. There are still a couple of dwarves distracted for lack of praying but it seems like they generally go over to the temple eventually. It's possible the dwarves are so caught up in some other activity/need that they aren't getting to it promptly.

Just discovered the lead toy axes the children play with weigh 11 urists. The iron battle axes the militia train with weigh 6 urists. These kids should be a little bit badass by the time they're done playing.

So I built my giant fortress library, spent forever escaping a the fortress I started in, spent an additional forever gathering books from a tower in adventure mode, took them across the large map to the library fortress, discovered none of them were necromantic, spent forever digging through legends for the only two necromantic books ever created, spent forever walking to the tower and manually crossing the twelve billion rivers that criss-cross across the map, got the books, got an unexplained crash right before I got to the library, did it again and this time saved liberally, then got back to the library and was greeted by a nemesis error.

I quit. No library.

Flying, granted.
But how should the game improve your ability to swim, if you cross the river by using the travel map.

Imagine a char who crosses dozens of rivers a hundred times (rivers, not just small brooks and creeks) - soon he should be able to swim perfectly.
Now he reaches the ocean, spots an island - and he can swim towards it without drowning.
And now imagine, that the same guy, who crosses all these waterways at the travel map, reaches the ocean and drowns - just because he couldn't train his ability.

It would be hard to simulate an increase of the ability if there is no real progress by flundering and such (besides: there would be no !FUN! by sudden carp-rushes anymore).

I think long distance swimming is a less common occurrence than the occasional river fording. Sure, no swimming experience from crossing is sort of inconvenient but not as inconvenient as leaving map view every couple seconds to walk a few steps, jump, swim, or flounder five for five urists before returning to map view.

Does anybody feel the game is improved by an inabillity to cross rivers from the travel map? I'm travelling long distances and it's just incredibly tedious. It's not difficult because I can swim, before I could swim I could just jump across with the aid of a running start or nearby tree, and assuming I couldn't swim and couldn't jump across I'm a vampire who can flounder in the water for as long as he pleases.

Using legends to track down necromancer books is pretty entertaining.

Death
New Death
More Death
Useful Death
Start your day with death
Maybe Death Will Help
First Death, then the world

The Eternal Dwarf: A 166 Page autobiography of an unknown creature. Apparently it left out some significant details.

So I got over 200 books in adventure mode but the only thing I could find with the secrets of life and death was a slab. Time to raid another tower.

Edit: To anyone having a similar problem you can enter legends mode and look for terms listed in the secret_death.txt they either often or always feature in the title of a book about the subject.

My new favorite book is "Good" only because when I tried to pick it up in adventure mode the prompt was "Get Good."

I noticed this too, I don't think they're actually sparring.

So I'm building a tower that houses a massive and extravagant library containing the knowledge of the last thousand years for the betterment of the world and now you go and show me how to fill it with necromancers. I was really trying to be the good guy this time.

my weaponsmith just made an artifact silver.... crossbow.... it couldent have been the most badass warhammer ever could it have been? whatever now i have a legendary weaponsmish
oh also the crossbow has a picture of itself on itself

the image of it probably has an image of it on an image of it ect.

When a marksdwarf gets into melee combat they use their crossbow as a weapon. The use of the crossbow as a melee weapon is governed by the warhammer skill. That sir is a warhammer so badass that it also shoots bolts.

Don't care if necro, these stories are awesome. Are you going to write any more?
Yes, the next one is the Captain of the Guard and it's coming out very soon.

in regards to making forbidden libraries...how would one go about separating books to the right book shelves?
Arduous deconstruction, forbidding, reconstruction, and unforbidding every time a new banned book is made?

Playing with a new defensive strategy. On the first level it's a standard castle style above ground structure with a dry moat.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
When the bridge is raised the gobbos have to go into the channel to try and scale the walls. If they fall they land right on top of an upright spike.

If they get to the top my dwarves are waiting in the tower and when the doors are opened they get bumrushed before they can rally their forces.
