Earlier fort had a massive library that had it's own book binding area so works could be bound before they were caught in a perpetual loop of being read. 28 books have been written there so far. The tavern was much more popular than the library but at least one tavern guest (a human dancer) went to the library to write a book (about becoming a dancer).

Currently building a tower called Wisdomborn in a large, 1050 year old world with an original 7 that all have writing + a skill like mathematician or geographer. The plan is to be bare bones except for the possibly multi-floor library. I want it to be space efficient but also a little bit grandiose.

This is a mock up made in 34.11 with fastdwarf, free building materials and other cheatery things I do for easy planning of structures.

I want to spam statues till I get one of a reasonably libraryriffic god and then place that statue in the separate room visible in the diagram. That's where I want to keep the "forbidden" books that contain blasphemous ideas and such.

Got two poets and a bard to join me as entertainers and formed the Pointy Rivers entertainment troupe. We were almost called the Lobsters of Euphoria.

Edit: We did a performance in the tavern after which one of the poets suddenly quit being a poet and became a milker. Must have shaken his confidence.

Both my brawling gobbos succumbed to infection right after a goblin siege showed up. I had no idea what happened because they were never reported dead and slabbing them just said they went missing. I had to copy the save, go to legends and pull up their names.

Is anybody having ‼FUN‼ with the taverns (besides dead cats)? Right now I'm having a great big interspecies love fest and it's kind of bumming me out. There are a handful of goblins, dwarves, and humans and a gorlak hanging out in the tavern and the only arguments I've noted resulted in one human becoming enraged and then calming down having done nothing. I put on my race war t-shirt and dwarves #1 foam finger and now I feel ridiculous watching them have civil disagreements.

Spoke too soon. There was a disagreement between a goblin and human poet then the goblin threw a punch, another goblin jumped in with him, and then three humans jumped in to defend the woman and turned it into a great big brawl. The humans are tougher and there's more of them but the gobbos have combat experience and they aren't afraid to get a little dirty. After round one there were some bruised up humans and two goblins passed out in a pile of their own teeth. Round two we'll call a draw because the goblins gave as good as they got, they were knocked out again but one of the humans was so badly torn up I thought he might die. Round three was decisive victory for the humans, one went down from exhaustion then got his nose smashed in, his ears cauliflowered, 3/4s of his teeth kicked out and his hand stomped to pulp. The other got a chunk clawed out of her face and before she passed out declared that the nearby poetry recital was arousing her. Vomit, blood and teeth litter the ground and the performers never stopped their recitals. Taverns rule.

My favorite one so far is the Spuxi that a gorlak bard brought. It's a clear glass block that is plucked to create a single high pitch. I just love the idea of a simple, delicately created instrument made by a primitive culture.

why not just set cats to "pet not available" in the animals section of the Z menu? if that is how that works anyway

or you can just cull ALL the animals that arnt pets and gelid all the ones that are

in my fort i kill every animal but a breeding pair of the largest species i have for their meat and other products
The source of Catsplosions is that cats unlike other animals choose their owners instead of the other way around. Before gelding this meant keeping the population low and quickly culling the young before they found someone to follow around.

In any case keeping the cats out of the tavern is a limited solution, I've taken to penning them up in the food stockpiles because the above ground section of the fortress is coated with alcohol thanks to the duplicating smears and pools deal.

Sooo I understand the importance of rigorous hygiene standards in medicine but I just had a dwarf lie in bed dying of thirst and starvation because his broken toe- despite being set and stitched up had not been splashed with muddy water. Finally gave up on waiting for the spring and found a muddy puddle in the caverns to placate mr fastidious.

So the cats are being splashed with dwarven strength alcohol by patrons spilling in the tavern and when they try to lick themselves clean they die of alcohol poisoning? That is absolutely fucking wonderful and I don't want it to be fixed.

Yes, I will have to keep a much larger population of cats which comes with and it's own difficult and is almost certainly not intentional but I need this delicious madness in my life and fortress.

That's the thing though.  I don't have a proper tavern set up, nor did I get any sort of message of him wanting to stay.

He's also still listed as a diplomat in the Units screen.
I'm fuzzy on the specifics but I think it's a thing that diplomats actually hang out instead of hi,bye, 1000 mile trek.

A random dwarf (No family no relations) after discussion with local rivals became queen of my civilization. We're clearly not dead because we continue to get liaisons and migrants.

A goblin bard wants to perform in the Buttery Brew. We've accepted vampires and gorlaks but this might be the true test of the spirit of drunken fraternity.

What about taverns?  Do visitors provide coins or other income, or just a quirky visit?  If they're somehow lost to a cult of blood drinkers, will other visitors arrive?
Still no economy but they pay for their stay in other ways.

Relaxing guests pay for their drinks by spilling them occasionally and creating jobs for the fortress. They'll also entertain dwarves sometimes by telling stories or preforming but mostly it seems to be the drink thing.
Poets/bards perform which satisfies certain dwarven needs. They also spill their drinks and create jobs for the fortress. It's mostly the drink thing.
Mercenaries join your fort for the long haul and can be used as regular soldiers or a handy distraction for the gobbos while your actual military prepares.
Long term performers are like short term performers except they stay in your fortress spilling more drinks and creating more jobs.

The reputation of your tavern seems to increase the likelihood of visits and their reasons for coming include "heard [fortress] was the place to relax" instead of just "was curious about [fortress]." I haven't actually lost any patrons so I'm not sure how that would impact visitation.
