DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The "How Does Minecart" Thread
« on: May 15, 2012, 11:55:24 am »
My research provided absolutely crazy result. Again.

So, I have a water-filled channel with ramps and a roller. Minecart number one stands on the end ramp. Minecart number two is pushed into the channel from the beginning.
Guess what?
They do not collide. When minecart 2 touches the roller, minecart 1 suddenly gains speed and flies up the ramp.
They are 50 tiles away from each other.

833 units? As in 119 complete tiles of water?

Nope, not that units. IIRC results of my another experiment, contents of a minecart make 2/7 water in one tile when being dumped.

I`ve made a long channel with a ramp on each end and like 48 tiles long roller between them.

1) An empty wooden minecart, being pushed into the channel, flies from the other end very fast and stops when it meets an obstacle. Nothing unexpected here.

Now let`s fill the channel with water and see some crazy science!

2)An empty wooden minecart, being pushed into the channel, becomes filled with 833 units of water, relatively slowly moves to the upward ramp and stops on it. From my previous experiment I can add that the minecart can start moving from ramp back on roller and than on ramp again, and it won`t stop while the roller is powered.

And now let`s change the "push" order to "ride".

3) A dwarf, riding a minecart through the water, does not leave it while it is still moving, despite being covered in water and drowning.

4) When a minecart with a dwarf collided with a minecart than was standing on a ramp, something strange happened. Both minecarts left the channel. The first one, which was standing on the ramp, moved like 10 tiles forward (only 2 of them were tracks). The second minecart moved only a tile or two forward, then it stopped, its "pilot" left it, grabbed it and hauled it back to start.
When I was trying to repeat this, the standing minecart also flew 10 tiles forward, but the moving one stopped on a ramp and didn`t even leave the channel. The pilot left it after the stop and went away using the emergency stairs.

Can somebody explain the 4th experiment?

What the hell.

Weight: m*g, where m - mass of our object, g - gravitational acceleration constant for particular celestial body.

The balloon floats in atmosphere because of Archimedes force. Put it into a vacuum chamber, and you will have to lift it manually, if you want to.

How old is your PC? Maybe it`s time to oil the fan bearing - or just replace the whole fan?
Also, check for hanging wires near the fan. They also can make some strange sounds when they touch the rotating fan, and you can spend ages until you realise what the hell was that.

...

Let me sum this up.

I explained how do I treat American people, but for every possible argument what I get is only "You hate us all, you are wrong".
Though when I read your words, I feel only pity for all American people and horror when I realise how deeply is your mind bound by an ideology that is probably much more dangerous than all dictators` and terrorists` ideas together.
Adequate people can just count the number of direct insults in your and mine posts to understand who is sane.
And yes, I am proud to speak as one of 7 billion citizens of mankind.
Our discussion is over.

Dude, it's a plan. Every military in the world got plan against everything. When you've got a massive totalitarian state taking over half of Europe, it's normal to plan for war against that state.

Excuse me. This plan was developed when Soviet Union and Great Britain were still fighting fascism together. And Soviets had a huge part of their country literally destroyed, all male population capable of fighting in army and women and children working on factories and plowing the fields. How could British generals consider Soviet government maniacs saying "men, forget the ruined country, we order you to attack our allies now" and Soviet people mindless slaves saying "OK, will be done"? It is clearly a traitorous, offensive plan.

And? I wasn't talking about Operation Dropship. And you are vastly overestimating the casualties involved in that operation What the hell is wrong with making a plan for war against a hostile nation threatening allies? How is that immoral? War isn't two gentlemen dueling at 10 paces. Taking out the majority of your enemies industrial capability early on saves lives on both sides in the long run by preventing a protracted battle with armies grinding through cities.

Dropshot. And this is not a plan of war, it`s a plan of genocide. How do you imagine a nuclear attack on industrial objects? A bright flash, you duck, than stand up, see all your factories magically disappearing and say "oh crap, we cannot make tanks now, let`s surrender"? The plants are always situated near the cities. Destroying a plant with nuclear bomb will kill half of city`s population - and believe me, I know what I am talking about, my training includes losses calculation techniques. And if there is more then one plant? And if the attacker sends more nukes just to be sure? Or just "usual" bombers? By the way, 60 millions is not my estimation, it was counted by US military. And the Dropshot plan is available for reading, you can find the link below the article.
You proud that your governments have finished the Cold war, but it were your governments who started it, forcing the Soviets to participate in arms race! Here is another traitorous plan.

In fact, I just like depersonalized style of discussion, which was completely broken when some people started to speak for their countries.
Like... You?

Please quote me speaking for my country. What I say is my own opinion, and (I hope) this opinion is not affected by any government`s propaganda.

You felt free to lump all of America in one big lump

I can perfectly make a difference between American people and American government, and the government`s actions in some particular cases are actually what I do not like.

...
a drastic demonstration of a change of power
...
we demonstrated that the fight was a total futal effort, and that we could kill them ALL without a single further American death

My congratulations, again. What your ancestors did is definitely a terroristic act. Useless, by the way, because nation sending untrained boys to crash airplanes into our ships didn`t really care about death of its citizens. It only would have given them more fanaticism for another 2-3 years of war. And what really made Japan to surrender was Soviet Union entering the war and immediately beating the shit out of Kwantung Army, capturing ~600 000 of war prisoners.

you got no clue

Japanese sources. Soviet sources. American. German. Mostly memoirs, sometimes historical analysis. The key is to estimate possible level of author`s bias. The knowledge is everywhere, but it is useless if your mind is locked in a cage of false righteousness.

By the way, what are your sources? Where do you get your information?

Germany, bro?

Nope.  :) Don`t rely on username, it has no sense.

The fucking hell? You think we dropped nukes on Japan and planned on invading Japan "just because their ideology was different". Learn some god damn history.

Dropshot operation. Learn some god damn history.

I've been studiously avoiding responding to any of your posts, since you're a blind ideologue with this huge chip on shoulder.  This constant barrage of you you you like you think every American on the Internet is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and outright saying everyone who doesn't try to topple their government shares total blame for its every action.

"You you you" was inspired by constant "we, we, we". Let`s just say "your state/government" and "our state/government".
I can perfectly make a difference between American people and American government, and the government`s actions in some particular cases are actually what I do not like. When forming my opinion about said actions I always try to use multiple independent information sources. And American people are OK, especially ones who sometimes use their critical thinking and do not percieve everything what their government says as holy truth.
As for saying everyone who doesn't try to topple their government shares total blame for its every action... seriously, man, what the hell? This is Kogan Loloklam`s statement, and I`m still in this thread because I think this approach violates general human morale.

Don't even bring in nuclear arms into this fight, we bitched about for fucking 50 years with the Soviets and haven't gone AWOL with them during the cold war so shut up about it.

If you want to continue discussion in such tone...
You Your government killed ~150 000 of innocent people, using nuclear weapons. And was planning to kill ~60 millions during Dropshot operation, just because their ideology was different. Counter this.

America is sort of like a teenage mother. We screw up all the time, but we do the best we can given our experience and the situation in the world, but if we were to just walk off from our responsibility things could go very bad, but people can always provide proof things would have been better without us in hindsight.
...
It's easier to hate Americans than actually find solutions to the problems we are failing to solve.

Bravo, this is what I wanted to hear. The problem with your government is that they do not respect old good primum non nocere credo, and continue doing exactly same thing despite failing all the time.
As for hating Americans, see above.

And about my unnamed country. As you can see by just looking into my profile, I`m here for like 5 months, and assuming I`m hiding my origin to SAFELY TROLL EVERYBODY IN THIS THREAD is ridiculous. In fact, I just like depersonalized style of discussion, which was completely broken when some people started to speak for their countries.

This was people, mostly Libyans asking NATO to intervene.

They were asking UN. NATO just formed a coordination and command body for a coalition of 19 countries which had some interests in Libya.
By the way, IIRC Gadaffi even wrote the letter to Obama saying something like "Son, let`s fight terrorism together!" and generally was ready for the negotiations. Some more agressive diplomacy would have been enough to topple the regime without a drop of blood hitting the ground, but instead of this NATO chose the violent way again. If I use logic of my opponents, I can say NATO is responsible for every death in this war, not only for collateral civilian losses.
Russia didn`t give veto because Russian president is a childish idiot. Russian ambassador in Libya called him "traitor" when the resolution hadn`t been vetoed.

...

You do it when you pick those innocents over the lives the targets would have taken out in the collateral damage
There are some international standarts for this. You should (re)read UN regulations about combatants and non-combatants. There is a difference between "our bomb will with 90% probability hit the target, continue" and "our bomb will with 10% probability kill a civilian, let`s cancel this operation and try diplomacy" approaches.

How many US soldiers should die to avoid a single civilian casualty
1:1, everywhere. This means that you should choose the lesser losses. In case of equal possible losses situation (lose one soldier or one civilian) the soldier is sacrificed, because it`s his job to die for other people.

We are now unsuitable in reducing the efforts of the drug cartels to increase their profits
Drug cartels are mostly your internal problem, and your people delegate the state the right to stop them.
Nobody delegated you the right to solve the world`s problems.
Fun fact: since US entered Afghanistan, production of opiates in this country is only increasing. Police? Cartels? Absolutely laughable, you say?

Okay, we are now unsuitable in telling governments they are not allowed to wholesale slaughter their citizens
You are perfectly suitable for telling. But usually you just appear and bomb said government with half of the country and citizens.

So do we hold our fire until we have magic bullets that stop everyone without a single person dying?
Yes. If you spend less money on constant wars, this "magic bullets" will not sound like a fairytale very soon. As I said, you do have technological potential.

As for other "world police" stuff - how can you explain that all EVIL DICTATORSHIPS you are fighting are sitting on oil deposits? And other  dictatorships who support America exist for decades, executeing, raping, and slaughtering vast amounts of their own citizens like any other dictatorship?

I can't help but note that you haven't expressed what country has your support.
Every country that does not start wars.

Americans were dragged kicking and screaming into this role from World War 2
I`d better not mention WW2, because during it you have set a record in your "minor collateral damage".
And like Il Palazzo mentioned, I`d like to hear your version of history.

No other country could do it
A lot can, when acting together. This is what UN exists for.

no matter how much I dislike little idiots out there screaming how badly they hate us, and trying to kill my children because my nation is good at it's job
You are distinguishing your people from other peoples again, also showing some signs of xenophobia. Not an attack, just stating the fact.

Edit: kind of missed the last two posts.

It was America's policy entering the war to finish it and go home, leaving Europe to the Europeans.
Actually you just started to supply Soviet Union after they stopped German war machine near Moscow. And showed up in Europe when it was clear that the Reich was done, to grab some of its legacy - technologies, specialists etc.

It`s pretty much clear that you sincerelly believe what your education and mass-media tell you. I cannot help.

Terrorism is the systematic use of terror
Yes, that`s what the word means. Maybe I should say "terrorists". And I do not mean ones who are trying to fight their government, I`m talking about ones fighting other governments. 9/11, Lockerbie, etc. Just think, these guys usually aren`t some crazy maniacs from movies, but at some point in their war they decided that lives of other people are sacrificable. Just like you.

the figures people outside America cite as to our evilness
Why do you separate your people from the mankind? Or from the forum community?

unsuitability as the world police
refinement of weapons to minimize loss of life to the most absolute possible
Nobody ever asked you to be the world police. Minimal life loss is zero, and you are unsuitable until you develop your weapons and tactics to a level that allows you to disarm armies without a shot.
Even now you theoretically can act as "world vigilante" - your technological level is already high enough to perform complicated ground operations with really minimal collateral damage. But it looks like your government likes that "Kill them all, surely the Lord discerns which are his" credo very much and all I see and hear about NATO and American operations in my life is: "...Bombing... cluster bombing... bomb into stone age... tomahawks... bombing..." and your rating in my eyes rapidly decreases to "one of the world criminals".

You're still talking about NATO there? 'Cause it makes no sense to me. :p

Yes. Though the part about "making you guilty" was inspired by the last two pages of this thread.

To Kogan Loloklam and his supporters: you are postulating the doctrine that:

1) there are no innocent civilians;
2) the people of the country are always responsible for government actions;
3) collateral losses are justified by the great purpose.

Congratulations, you are officially supporting terrorism.

More like some people is randomly shooting people in your neighbourhood, police come in and get him with a grenade launcher.

Let me correct this. Police come in and get you with a grenade launcher. Then they say you are guilty because you did nothing to stop the shooter(s) yourself.
