Life Advice / Re: Improving mile time

CONSCRIPT REPORTING (spell this with your best fake Russian accent :D)

Okay, I have a few questions. First one: what "mile" are we talking about? 1.6 kilometers? Just to be sure.
Second one: OP, what is your current weight and height?

Later I`ll tell the story about my own running achievements. And now I can only give an advice, but following it is potentially harmful and I do not take any responsibilities:

Life Advice / Re: Where to find iron?
« on: September 02, 2011, 10:51:15 am »
Pure iron would be obtained by removing all carbon (and all silicon but that has lesser effects on the metal properties) and as a result it's even more expensive then cheap steel.

And also pure iron is soft like plasticine, kinda useless as a nail :)

By the way, if we add more silicon to steel, we will get electrical steel, which returns us exactly to the thread theme. Levi, may I know the specification of said magnet? Winding type, voltage, etc.? Just curious :)

Oh, not this again.  :) Guys, it is soft magnetic material, forget about permanent magnetisation! Also, even if it was usual steel, you would need something more serious then home-made winding to permanently magnetise it to noticeable level.

Before military service I didn`t mind somebody consuming alcohol. Now, when I have seen what a drunkard or another addict is capable of doing, and how easy people slide into addiction, I just hate them.

"The secondary coil of a transformer must be winded with 0.8 mm magnet wire, but because nobody will read this let`s use barbed wire"  :)

Quite strange for me to hear about the inability to find simple iron. I`d use any suitable piece of scrap metal that responds to a little magnet.
If the situation is really SO bad, look for old transformer cores, or try to find some soft ferrite powder as nenjin suggested. Or ready ferrite cores in nearest electrical engineering store.
Also, I don`t think you should care about permanently magnetising the core.

General Discussion / Re: I AM THE MAN WHO ARRANGES THE BLOCKS

"...I am the man who arranges the blocks
That continue to fall from up above.
The markets are free! So much money for me!..."

and further should be replaced by

"I am the man who arranges his debts
`cause my factory stopped due to customers lack.
Economy`s crashed, I`m street cleaning to live,
Dear God, please bring our Union back!"

Seriously guys. I hope no one of you will ever see his country crashed to pieces. If you think the life became better, just look at this birth/death graph: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ru/a/ac/RSRF.png . Birth rate is blue line.

Makes me sad when I realise that like 80% of viewers believe in what this song says. I mean... how dare the authors to call it "history"?

Theory; make an adventurer and try to spread this syndrome to the world. Then create a new fort and see if the starting dwarfs (or caravans or migrants) all have the syndrome...

No. Starting team is just generated from nowhere on your map. Same for caravans and migrants and everything except FBs and sieging civ leaders.

Build the Perimeter system: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Hand_(nuclear_war)
Make it fully automatic (no dwarves locked in lever bunkers!). Make it capable of detecting the invasion and launching something terrible if the fort`s defences are breached. Above-mentioned magma cannon, for example.

Grakelin:
I was just sharing my opinion. You know, if Omegastick was completely sure in his further way in life, he wouldn`t create this thread and ask us.

Personal goals? It seems we see this goals different. If your goal is career, any Western army seems a perfect place, but I was assuming Omegastick`s goal is piloting. A lot of us wanted to be pilots or astronauts in school... and it`s good that somebody doesn`t give this dream up.

As for me, military service is mandatory in my country, so it was like:

Terrible time is only first few months, then it is pure !!FUN!! :)
Also, I started playing DF there.

What about you don't I know which would apply to this?

You know nothing, as I said before. This is the Net, any person here can be anyone in RL. And being "grown up around military" doesn`t give you right to simply invade the discussion with "LOL ALL CIVS SUCK"-face. We are just trying to warn Omegastick, that military service is usually 99.9% of very hard work and only 0.1% of your childhood romantic dreams coming true.

The last three pages have just been people who do not understand what they are talking about blabbering on about remnants of Vietnam War Protests.

Choose your words carefully, please. You never know.

If I could see that they were posing a threat to human lives, then yes. If the general (or whatever) just went mad and ordered me to kill everyone, then I would desert.

If all goes well, that wont happen.

What can I say? You`re going to be a pilot of a multi-role combat airplane of an active military block. Expect to have blood on your hands - and I do not mean somebody who "was posing a threat to human lives", I mean inevitable collateral damage to civilian people. No offence, just cruel logic. The decision is yours.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Kobold Appreciation Conference
« on: June 06, 2011, 05:56:17 pm »
One more kobold-catching way: build a long retractable brigde, and fill the space under it with cagetraps. Use a stockpile of something valuable to lure them and chained animal near the pile to detect them. When a kobold is detected, it flees, and all you have to do is manually command your dwarfs to raise the bridge. Stunned kobold is not trap-immune. The negative side is they will have some broken limbs, but... this is DF  :)

Also somebody mentioned that kobolds are trap-immune only when invisible - this is false. They do not even trigger pressure plates, and to catch them you must disable them by webbing or stunning.

No cakes today. It looks like

each wall settles to the lowest point it can.

Seriously, I doubt that if we make the whole structure by casting and mining the results will be different. We need a final test for this:

If you make a hollow space out of natural rock (cast obsidian, perhaps - constructed walls deconstruct as soon as they lose support), and put any amount of liquid inside it, the structure would remain hollow after collapse.
